In traditional gamplay, Nasus, like everybody else, has his role to play. Whatever it may be or whatever you want to call it: tanky-dps, off-tank, AD CARRRY(wut), there is always someone who can do it better than him. When trying to squish Nasus into this traditional gameplay-play role he seems to peak out reach his highest potential pretty soon. It isn't very high.
To play Nasus at his next level, you need to pull him out of his traditional role. If you try to be innovative and experiment, you'll quickly see that he has been one of the most overpowered champs in a long time, and is just so ridiculously overpowered after this latest patch that i actually feel kind of bad.
So what's this "new and innovative" role?
Jungle AD carry. Like I've been playing him all along.

Started some jungling with him yesterday. I have only tried standard jungling route in normal games (totally viable), but in theory, he can lvl 2 gank like a baws.
Take one Wraith, go to Lizard, have a dude leash him (it is possible to do it alone, however it's more safe with someone leashing), drink a pot and go bot for an easy gank with Wither (lol-wut slow forever? no tenacity to stop it), red-buff and Q.
gonna work.

He has a strange skill vs. usefulness scaling. He isn't very hard to master, but at the same time his usefulness in an actual game plateaus rapidly and at some point you'll find that you're simply squeezing everything out poor Nasus has to offer.
The way most people over come this is just by adding more charges to his SS and making him nuke as much as possible. There isn't much else to do. And since he doesn't really have much game-changing potential, he isn't included in High Tier lists.
