Meh, Malzahar is too dependent on his ultimate for me to like. I mained him for a while but then I just fell out of love due to that. IMO mages like Anivia can put out big damage every 4 seconds or so, which is why they are superior to Malzahar, as well as having good team utility. Hope you like him though.

i would recommend singed.... wheee run around

malzahar is easy to play with...but to play him good you need to practice his his combo (landing Q is a must) most players new to malz will just E-R
you need to be able to do the full combo in less than 1sec (smart casting is 1 way)
