Few dota players? You srs?
You started playing Moba after LoL came up didnt you...
Yeah since DotA started as fun map, there wasnt that much attention on it, but how long has DotA evolved before LoL came up? ~6 years?

Regarding "differences":
LoL "evolved" after basing on DotA, but if its for the better or worse, thats up to personal opinion.
HoN TOTALLY copied DotA: Chars, Map layout, mechanics etc.
DotA may had its flaws and even if HoN corrected them (NOT talking about new content and such) DotA2 will likely do the same.

@TheJohn if you think HoN is the better Moba (no offen there, your personal opinion) but its likely that youre more for the original DotA style instead of the LoL-altered one.

Compared to the 15 million playing LoL? Yeh, there are only a few DoTA players. Did I start when LoL came out? Yes I did, and I know people came from DoTA to LoL, and as far as I know it was the original MOBA, but compare the masses of people who started playing MOBA's because of LoL to the group who came from DoTA. It would equal out to be a 'few'. And I am bloody glad people joined at LoL because now we have a huge community, and this is one of the most respected forms of e-sport. MOBA's are on the block along with Fps RTS and mmorpg's. Good show lads, good show!

And DotA was the one who made it possible... LoL is only a sequel of it, realized by an own company founded by a part of DotA's progger.

And Btw:
Normally I'm not that fond of Wiki, but this one seems ok:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_of_the_Ancients
Just Development/Reception and Legacy.

Quoted:
"Mescon continued to maintain dota-allstars.com, which by the end of IceFrog's affiliation in May 2009 had over 1,500,000 registered users and had received over one million unique visitors every month."

Exactly a few, 10%. Also Ultima Online and The Realm online were the first MMORPG's (I know there were some like chat scrollers but...) and WoW doesn't even have to think about them etc.

LoL has reached WoW status in the MOBA world, in my opinion that's the best way to look at it, and the most probable outcome will be that LoL dominates for a good while.

1. Its not 10% you could easily take 3 million+ Dota players for granted. 4-5 million if you take the lesser activ into account.

2. I'm not against LoL or anything, but from what youre posting LoL is the top and DotA was somewhat "outdone" by it?
Proggers leave DotA starting new Moba projects -> DotA's done for -> Gamers HAVE to move on -> LoL/HoN -> HoN p2p, done for -> LoL remains -> DotA2 remake of the real one, Lead progger + big gaming company -> ?

Not saying that DotA2 will automatically take over the Moba franchise, but stating that LoL's untouchable is pretty naive.
Some fanboy mentality at best.

Not everyone plays a game because of its graphic. DotA has sucky graphic and it still has a huge player base so yes, League is going to stick around.

I do enjoy playing LoL, but I like DotA. It's more challenging, can't recall whenever you want.. Last hitting creeps & denying.

They're 2 similar but 2 different games, it'll stick around for sure.

Invincibility lies in the defence; the possibility of victory in the attack

Its ok. I like HoN because things happen faster, heroes are powerful. You can kill a tank with 2 burst heroes. Sometimes I think LoL champions are too weak

Yeah, thats somewhat disturbing AND reassuring and the same time.

Instead of trying to balance every little aspect and risking to dull it, they just OP'd everything.

Counterpicking in DotA:
Team A takes OP "stronk".
Team B counters with OP "Shadownightsilentkiller***sassinownage1337masterofdisaster".
Team A anti-counters with OP "rah stirring up a mob".
Team B nukes everything picking OP "Chuck Norris".

It seems there to be a clar division about people forming. People think that DOTA 2 will take the players from LoL because of the more competing scene and the graphics. The arguement here is that LoL may not be as big in the pro scene if the pro players do indeed decide to leave LoL to play DOTA 2. The other arguement seems to be coming up is that League us gonna stick around. People are saying there are different gameplay mechanics that make it different from DOTA altogether.

My thought now upon reading everyone's comments that is Leaguebis gonna stick around. Even if we lost the big pro scene we still have tons if casual players that make up the community and fan support. Also, me being a lover of dominion has different game type or maps if you will. While DOTA was just one map.

Now this is vibes I am getting from reading over 30 responses on the subject. I have never played DOTA nor DOTA 2 or HoN so I couldn't tell you the differences.
