So the problem is that you can't see the numbers? Look at your health bar - does the lifesteal still happen, or are you only concerned with not being able to see how much health you're gaining?

Lifesteal on Mordekaiser is ***** I think that's what they really meant, you don't go AD with Mordekaiser so Lifesteal by default is a bad idea. You could try to carry, but you won't last very long unless you are UBER FED with 3x Bloodthirster (FYI: It has been nerfed)
They could be referring to Spellvamp, he is 85% or more magic damage afterall, which helps but it's a matter of going all out AP which I myself find to be quite risky. It's fun to try; you should NEVER only have 1 build you follow 100% 24/7, get alternatives and try new things to become a better player.
Lastly they could be referring to Children of the Grave. If you see any guides getting a freaking Spirit Visage you should probably choose another build, it doesn't work with your ultimate since it's lifesteal and not healing. I wouldn't worry about it not being show, just ask yourself; If you don't notice the healing, is it worth it? (lol)

WW with lifesteal items, should be stealing hero passive + his lifesteal item, but it reports only one lifesteal.... sometimes not even his passive...
