It is all OK until he reaches LVL 6. Every next lvl up is worse for you. Try to be agressive from begining and then go max tank. Your shields will absorb alot of damage so let him to waste his mana from Q (you can dodge it too ofc). Your way is to go full tank and focus on another enemies and just support your team with R´s and W´s. You can defend very well but you need a help of your ally to push your lane. There is like 90% chance Urgot will take Teleport, so you should take it too if you want to save your tower from being destroyed. Urgot is just more in safety than you. You are supposed to do dirtier jobs.
Ornn
If you are unlucky and enemy picks Orn, your W is useless vs all his spells. Best time to use your W is when he activates his passive and his next attack will deal massive damage.
Riven
Shen is one from of best counters for Riven. Just like Volibear and Orn. Your 1st item should be Tiamat so you can farm and then Omens and Ninja Tabis. The advantage why to pick Shen and not Volibear or Orn is that you also do not need mana. Let Heil Blades to do its work and then Riven will be afraid of you. But there is a thing you should avoid and that is her ultimate. You should not fight her when your HP is very low.
Darius
His passive (bleeding) is annoying. Beware if he has Ignite or Ghost as Summoner Spell. Play safe and do not let him stack his passive on you. But you are more useful in teamfights. He is unable to kill your ally if you are in front. Your E and W and also Randuin´s Omen can save many lives.
Tryndamere
After some experiences against Tryndamere, buy Randuin´s omen, Ninja Tabi then Thornmail as soon as possible. With Heil Blades, W and shields you are much stronger than him. You do not have to be feared of his critical strikes. I recommend to take Exhaust to just keep him from killing you after he uses his ultimate. But if you do so, he will split push when you gank someone with your R and you canˇt come back to lane so fast. The thing you should be afraid of.. is his E (jump) which still deals damage when you press your W. You need to think twice before you press R to help someone.
Vladimir
Be very agressive at the start. Tiamat and then Titanic hydra is very recomended. Vladimirs usualy do not predict much dmg from Shen, but Heil Blades are very effective. Frozen Mallet is also good as last item.
Cho'Gath
AP offtank Cho´Gath is beast. True dmg, heavy CC, Silence, bigger range, AOE skills. Your W will not help so much in teamfights. At the start he is killable. You are relatively safe when you buy some MR and HP, but .. it is hard to dodge his Silence and following Q. You have to waste E alot which and you have to wait long time for another.
Dr. Mundo
Ultimate is just unfair and his Q deals percentage DMG of your HP. That is why i recommend risky but strong offtank build for other champion takedowns. Tiamat for farming and thornmail to reduce healing.
Fiora
3 of her 4 skills + her passive are annoying. But if she does not parry your taunt, you are relatively in safe. When she presses her R and you are below 50% HP, you should escape. On the other side, unskilled Fiora is useless. Do not let her to heal. Titanic hydra, Thornmail, Omens, Exhaust are strong and highely recommended. Also stay away from her Qs and dont let her to hit her passive to deal additional percentage damage of your maximum HP.
Yasuo
Yasuo is not really counter for Shen. It is very hard to win farm, but when they are fighting, Shen is absolutely able to stop him. Building Titanic hydra and Randuin´s Omen is very effective. If you take exhaust, Yasuo will be zero and useless in teamfights.

Shen is powerful champion with only one deficit. The only deficit is the inability to farm quickly. That´s why I recommend Tiamat and then Titanic Hydra. You can also use Sunfire, but it is unnecessary vs most enemy Champions. Can work vs Tank Malphite or Yasuo due to their shields, but Tiamat works better and will be more useful in lategame. You also get damage from your HP for its activation and that is what you want from Shen... to make a lot of damage in the shortest possible time.
