This is my AP Sion build. My issue with the other AP builds out there is that they dont utilize the full power of Sions Ult. While AP Sion is extremely valid, his ult is only really effective if you have some decent damage to back it up. So while my build is heavily influenced by Chancellors Clean up on aisle sion: AP sion build, i have made some adjustments. Hope you enjoy, and I am open to suggestions.
I am going to be comparing my build to Chancellors a lot, and here is the first place that i find myself at odds with him.
Magic Pen Marks - Necessary, they are extremely valuable and you need to have them
Flat Armor Seals - this is where i differ from Chancellor. He suggests flat mana regen seals, but i find i dont need that small amount of mana regen when i have a dorans ring, and all the masteries for increased mana regen. Armor might not be the best call as a substitute, but i run them on most champs because i find them useful to have. dodge seals would work as well. also flat ap seals, but i find 5 ap isnt that monumental, even early game.
AP per lvl Glyphs - i find these more useful than flat ap glyphs simply because they pass the flat ap glyphs at lvl 6. i can deal with less ap until then.
Flat Ap Quints - 15 AP at lvl one. Really nice, because with masteries, ap glyphs, and a dorans ring, you should start out with 32 AP which gives you some heavy duty pokes early on.
I run 9-0-21 making sure to take magic pen in offense (and ap per lvl). In Utility i take as much regen improvement as i can with greed, buff duration, move speed, and the ghost mastery. its the same mastery page as Chancellor's. Its fairly standard and i dont think i need to argue anyone over that.
This is where i go off book. In my build i include a slightly more comprehensive build pattern than chancellor does, simply by including the small item purchases as well.
I start off with dorans ring (reasons given in Runes chapter) and after gathering some money, i return to base to purchase base boots and kage's pick. Because i know im going to build Deathfire Grasp at some point i make sure to get kage's lucky pick as soon as possible. this is key, as it will provide you with extra gold until you finish your DG. Dont worry if you die before being able to purchase these items as it will cost 1115 gold for base boots and kage's pick. if you can, pick up some pots as well.
Usually my next purchase will when i can buy sorcerors shoes and a mana crystal for ROA. Get your Catalyst the Protector asap after your full boots. it will provide you with great lane sustainability as you should still be lvling on a regular basis. After you finish ROA you can do pretty much what you want, but i like to get my DG right after. THis gives me another nuke to use in fights. Then build Rabby's.
The last two items in my build are what is different from CHancellors. He suggest going straight(er) AP, getting Morello's Evil Tome and Abyssal Scepter. These are by no means bad calls. they give you mana regen, cd reduction, more ap than mine do, and magic resist (and magic resist reduction).
The reason i have changed these is simple. Sion's ultimate Cannibalism increases his attack speed and gives him pretty big lifesteal. With enrage toggled on, he becomes an unstoppable jugglenaut. (Community reference sry) Anyways... if you build chancellors items (see paragraph above) this spell is not nearly as effective as it could be. I wondered how you could make his ultimate more useful without taking away from his power in the AP department. The answer i came up with is simple.
Hextech Gunblade - still gives a solid amount of ap. it also gives spell vamp, lifesteal, damage, and a slow. while his ap is still buffed from this item, his ult will be much more useful. also you now have a slow, a stun, a shield, and a big nuke.
Nashor's Tooth. Gives more cd Reduction than morellos, almost as much mana regen, 20 less AP, but gives a 50% attack speed bonus. This item, with Hextech and your ult, makes you extremely dangerous without any other spells. If they have a banshee veil, burst it with hextech, stun them, shield yourself, and destroy them.
These items dont take away from sions power as a mage, but severely increase his ability to duel. All in all i think they will be of more use when it comes to late game.
The one issue that you might bring up is that i have more than 40% cd reduction with these items and masteries, true yes but there are worse things that i could be doing.
Remember, if you dont feel tanky enough, feel free to purchase other items than the ones i recommend. Abyssal scepter is very valuable, rylai's isnt a terrible call, morello's is good too. Banshee veil, ive seen a guinsoo's once or twice, and there are others too. Feel free to experiment, this isnt supposed to be concrete.
