The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
How does one play Garen without realizing his true potential to be one of the best hyrbrids in the game? Well my friends most people seem to forget that Garen is capable of having a huge health pool and an impressive critical strike chance at the same time. Most people in the game will be playing straight up tank or staight up dps, but for the few who realize it, they will see the potential, and will quickly look for a way to play Garen effectively as a Hybrid. This build will give you the insight necessary to play Garen as a hyrbrid and bring your opponents to their knees with the help of your team mates in team battles and to even go as far as taking on two on one mid-game while maintaining a relatively high health. Welcome to my Hybrid Garen build and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do playing it.
Rune Build: What do I do to ensure maximum dps?
As Garen you will realize that unless you are a full tank there is no use for the tanking runes and as such I have came up with a rune build that will give you extreme efficincy through out the game without worrying about who you are fighting.
Greater Mark of Desolation: The reason for these beautiful runes is to ensure your hits matter. Most melee dps gets this type of rune as it helps them deal with people who get high amounts of armor relatively easier than those without it.
Greater Glyph of Focus: Now some people will not like this and that is fine. You can always switch the glyphs for crit glyphs and get a higher amount of crit, but that is up to you. Do what you feel fit to do. I feel better having a great deal of cd reduction as it gives me my ultimate quicker, which will allow you to easily change the tide of a team fight mid-late game.
Greater Seal of Malice: You do need a higher crit out of the gate and these seals will help you do that. High critical strike means more damage for Judgement (your main way of dealing damage) and that is why I pick up Seals of Malice as the extra crit is a God send.
Greater Quints of Desolation: More Armor Pen. equals quicker kills on squishies and high armored opponents. Trust me when I say it is worth while to pick these bad boys up.
Boots of Swiftness: The first item I usually get is boots of swiftness, usually grab the regular boots and three health pots until you have about 1.75k gold and then go back to shop to pick up your boots and a Giant's belt. The reason for picking up boots of swiftness is seriously for ganking purposes and running in and out of team fights. You need the movement speed to help allies and to attack stragglers in the back of team fights thinking they are safe from your team when they actually aren't.
Sunfire Cape: This item is going to make your judgement Godly. Think about this for instance. You Judgement next to two enemies and then the flames also tick for their damage, you kill these two enemies without taking too much damage and then decisive strike away with boots of swiftness so that the other members of their team don't gank you. This item has it all for Garen! Health/Armor/DOT! You will start building this item early game and get it way before mid-game begins as this item will help you survive fights and win fights. I usually build it from Giant's belt, but you are more than welcome to try it with the other item it made with.
Phantom Dancer: You want Crit? Check. You want AS? Check. You want Movement Speed? Check. You want Dodge Chance? Check. This item is really one of the greater items in terms of versatility as it give you everything you are going to need mid-game to roflstomp your opponents and send them to the burning gates of cerebrus. Start by getting zeal after your sunfire cape is done and if you have the money pick up Cloak of Agility to begin building up to your mid-game Phantom Dancer. Once you have got this item your speed will make you almost impossible to get away from and your crit should be monstrous almost getting a crit every four hits and your attack speed should be decent. All in all your foes are in for a world of hurt.
Warmog's Armor: An item that will make your health unbelievably high and will help Garen become near invincible in one on one fights. This item is the fourth item you get as it gives you that much needed survivability in combination with Sunfire Cape. Health regen/+Health/Stack Ability is very useful for Garen and can help you if you need to have a prolonged team battle. Running out of a battle then coming back 20 or so seconds later with a lot more health than you left with can and will turn the tide if you play right. All in all this item is the fourth item you get and the faster you get it the better.
Atma's Impaler: Think of this as a reward for getting such a high health. This item is Garen's bread and butter and some would ask if that was so then why exactly is it the fifth item? Well to be honest it is completely worthless unless you have over 3k health and with Warmog and Sunfire you should now have that much health. Atma's Impaler gives you crit/armor/health<Damage. This will give you a definite edge in fights and if you can't get the last item in the build then this weapon will surely give you all you need to down opponents quickly and remove threats in team battles.
Infinity Edge: The last item in this build is extremely hard to get as by the time you get the cash for it...usually the fight is over and there is no need to get it at all. I put it here so you could see, just in case, what item I would usually get to deal damage. As you have a high enough health to survive and a sizeable amount of armor, there should be no concern with any more defensive items. Pure offense is the way to go and Infinity Edge will give you the final straw to win the match if you haven't already.
