I think it's quite effective because Akali is a hybrid, meaning that you can build both AD and AP on her.

Because her W allows her to turn invisible while in the range, she is good for ganking. Just place down the W and wait for the enemies to come towards you.
You should always max out your Q first since it's ranged and gives your opponents less chance to escape with low health.
