Skill Sequence

You probably saw that I am maxing Q last although most people max it first. That is because I find that E is a lot more useful when it comes to being solo top then Q because it gives you good movement and good damage so you won't be killed by the Jungler easily and won't miss out in the damage department.

*Note: Charge up E first preferably in the bushes and then come out for a surprise attack.

Runes

You can use either Armor Quintessences or Movement Speed Quintessences depending on your choices. I usually go for Armor so I am more tanky but MS Quintessences are good for extra damage and mobility.

I focus on getting as much Movement Speed as possible from the masteries while also getting some extra Defense (MR / Armor ect.)

Items

I prefer playing Hecarim as a Solo Top Off-Tank. My items focus on tankyness while keeping damage and gaining some extra speed. Of course you can switch up the order depending on the enemy team although generally it should provide you with enough defense for most teams. Also you can consider switching MoM with Frozen Mallet if the enemy team doesn't do lot's of magic damage and you usually stay above 50% HP in fights.

Summoner Spells

I chose ghost obviously because of Hecarim's passive and ignite to get the edge in solo top since he has enough Movement Speed to return at the top tower quicly. Other Good Options:

Teleport: In case you aren't fast or you prefer it over ignite.

Flash: For awesome Survivability and Catching up to fleeing enemies that not even ghost with E
can reach them. ( nidalee ect. )

Cleanse: In case a team has lot's of stuns you might consider switching ignite with cleanse.

Pros / Cons

Pros: Hard to escape and easy to escape with.
Awesome abilities.
Not hard to master if you get used to him.


Cons: Needs some kills to start up.
Not the strongest early game.
A team with lots of stuns can get on your nerves.
