Hello dear readers, you have come across a Jungle Phoenix Udyr guide. I am GodOfMayhem and I have been playing League of Legends for 1 year now. I play on the EU West servers and currently have an ELO of 1400. I have made jungling my specialty but I am by no means a professional player. In this guide I will try to explain what I believe is the most efficient way to play Jungle Udyr at my level. Constructive critisism is greatly appreciated as this is my first guide ever. Please forgive me if my English isn't perfect because English is not my native language. Now sit back and enjoy reading!

Summoner Spells

Smite: As a jungler you will absolutely need Smite to secure/steal buffs, dragons and barons. Furthermore Smite will increase the speed with which you jungle in the beginning.
Flash: Even after the recent nerfs to Flash I still prefer this summoner spell over Ghost. This is because as a jungler your strongest asset is the element of suprise, I believe Flash complements this better than Ghost. Besides this, Ghost becomes less effective as the game progresses because you keep getting a higher movement speed (way higher than other characters) and because of dimishing return Ghost becomes way less effective.

Greater Mark of Attack Speed: The damage of Phoenix Udyr scales best with attack speed because every 3rd attack Phoenix Stance deals massive damage hence we pick these marks. There are no other alternatives as near as good as these runes. The damage from Phoenix Stance is magic so the only possible alternative are Greater Mark of Magic Penetration.
Greater Seal of Armor: I find these runes to be optimal for Udyr for several reasons. Greater Seal of Armor give you the early armor you need for a full clear while starting with Boots of Speed and 3 Health Potion. These runes are pretty standard and safe runes for any jungler.
Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist: These runes are pretty standard, they will help you versus the enemies AP carry in teamfight later on. Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist combined with Mercury's Treads and Wit's End will get you to about 150-160 magic resistance at lvl 18.
Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed: Udyr does not have any gap closers or ranged skills. The only way to solve this problem is to get a high movement speed. Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed along with the 2 movement speed masteries in defense and utility we get a high enough movement speed to partially cover Udyr main weak point, mediocre ganks.

When I play Udyr I aim to be an off-tank, I will deal moderate amounts (to high in early game) of damage with Phoenix Stance without any real offensive items, runes (except for Greater Mark of Attack Speed) or masteries. This is the main reason why I chose to go down the defensive tree and put the remainder of the points into utility. Another important reason why I chose these masteries is because we want to get the maximum amount of movement speed available for the very reason that Udyr ganks are mediocre and his real only ganking tool is his raw movement speed. Last but not least, we want to have the increased buff duration mastery. This allows us to gank more often with red buff and be able to spam skills for a longer time when we have blue buff.

Items - Core Build

I want to get one thing straight and that is the misconception that Phoenix Udyr needs Wriggle's Lantern. The mitigation of damage and recovery of health that Udyr gets from Turtle Stance is sufficient to keep him at a reasonable health level. You might need some additional potions early on in the game but that's it. Next to this, Wriggle's Lantern provides you with lifesteal and because the damage from Phoenix Stance is magic lifesteal is a wasted stat. Spending 1600 gold on an item that you do not need is waste of money and utterly useless.

Boots of Speed and 3 Health Potion: We start off with these items because we have sufficient armor to do a full clear and have enough health left to gank afterwards. The reason we choose these items is because like mentioned before Udyr's only gankign tool is raw movement speed and with Boots of Speed we will outrun anyone and hopefully get off some succesful ganks.

Mercury's Treads or Ninja Tabi: We rush level 2 boots to get even more movement speed and be even better at ganking! As Udyr you have 2 choices when it comes down to buying boots:
- Mercury's Treads: You buy these boots if they have a large amount of CC and/or deal a significant amount of magic damage (when they are running dual AP or their jungler is AP orientated).
- Ninja Tabi: You buy these boots if they do not have a large amount or CC and/or have a lot of physical damage.

I personally prefer Mercury's Treads because of the CC reduction it gives you, because in my build there is no room for another item that gives CC reduction. I believe that CC wins you teamfights and ultimately the game, so CC reduction is your best option in teamfights. Besides this, once Udyr has Randuin's Omen he has enough armor to survive. The only magic resistance item we get is Wit's End so with Mercury's Treads we elevate our magic resistance to an acceptable level.
