Kog'Maw is most effective against tanks, as his W skill combined with the affect of Madred's can be very devistating to the enemy tank. Kog'Maw scales with attack speed, and though he may be squisy, his range compensates for his lack of health, as he can just burst enemies down behind your team.
Kog'Maw takes alot of skill to use, as positioning his ultimate may be tricky. I build Kog'Maw using attack speed, as attack speed scales very well with his Bio-Arcane Barrage.
For Kog'Maw, i like to get Armor Pen runes for Red, Attack Speed for Yellows,Mana Regen/Per Level for Blues, and for Quintessence i get Armor Pen. Armor Pen to more affectively take down tanks, Attack Speed for better scaling with Bio-Arcane Barrage, and Mana Regen to spam his ultimate late game. The builds i see use Attack Speed Marks for Kog'Maw, but i tend to use Armor Pen as i believe Penetration Runes are the best Marks to have. If you have trouble staying alive with Kog'Maw, get Hp Quints.
I always go 21/0/9, cause favor damage for Kog'Maw. i reach the 15% longer duration of neutral buffs because Kog'Maw loves the Red and Blue buffs. Having Golem Buff can help you spam your ultimate around, and the Lizard Buff helps you slow enemies while adding additional damager every physical hit. Reaching the 5% additional damage helps make Kog'Maw even more deadlier.
Flash and Ghost, the best skills to mobilitize this mortar. Kog'Maw has not escape mechanisms,and so Flash and Ghost is always key. It can also help chasing down low enemies.
Passive: Icathian Suprise
Upon death your character becomes invulnerable for four seconds and after those four seconds you explode and deal 100+(25*Lvl) damage to nearby enemies (both creeps and champions).
Passive: Increases Attack Speed by 10/15/20/25/30%
Active: Deals 60/110/160/210/260 +(70% Ability Power) damage to the target as well as reducing their armor by 5/10/15/20/25.
On use causes your attacks to have an increased 140/180/220/260/300 unit range as well as making your attacks do an additional 2/3/4/5/6% of the target's health in damage (+1% of your AP). This effect lasts for six seconds.
Sprays ooze in front of you at a fairly long range which deals 60/110/160/210/260+(70% AP) to any enemies it passes through. Additionally it slows enemies who pass through the trail left behind by 28/36/44/52/60% of their movement speed.
You fire an artillery ooze at an incredible range (1400/1700/2000) which falls after a short delay dealing 80/120/160 + (30% AP) magic damage and reveals targets for 4 seconds. Damage to champions is increased by 150%. Every subsequent cast within 6 seconds costs an additional 50 mana, up to a maximum of 250 additional mana.
For all DPS, i always start off with a Doran's Blade for the lifesteal, attack, and health. I get Greaves for boots for the added Attack Speed, but if the enemy team is filled with CC, i reccomend getting Mercury Threads.
The key item for Kog'Maw is Madred's Bloodrazor, as it deals additional 4% of the enemies HP. This item combined with Bio-Arcane Barrage can deal a total of 10% of the enemy's HP.
I get Frozen Mallet for the added 700 HP, because Kog'Maw is squishy. The slow from your physical attacks can help you catch up to fleeing enemies, and its just wonderful to see the chilly ice effect when you pelt someone with your basic attack.
Black Cleaver is the next item i get, because it really fufills the role in with Kog'Maw's is imbeded with, a deadly force that makes all tanks **** their pants. You can subtract up to 60 armor from the enemy tank, and that can help to deal true damage to the opponent.
After all these core items, i either get infinity edge or phantom dancer. Infinity for the added attack, or Phantom for the added movement speed/ attack speed/ critical chance.
Playing with Kog'Maw
I always like to go mid with Kog'Maw, because getting his ultimate first is helpful. Kog'Maw is a great pusher, as he can outrange almost every champion.
I tend to stay behind the tank and focus fire the tanks first, then burst down the squishies. Living Artillery is used to kill the scurrying enemies.
My combo consists of; E>W>Q and frequent uses of R in team fights. I always get Red/Blue Buff if i can.
Kog'Maw is a great DPS, tank-annihilator, carry. He is very item dependent, so try to mid and last hit as often as you can. Mastering him can be tricky, but practice makes perfect.
