Summoner Spells

Teleport and Exhaust are the best for Solo Top because exhaust can let you play risky. With exhaust you can let an opponent in 1v1 get confident then use Exhaust Blade of the Exile Valor Ki Burst basic attacks Broken Wings and finish with Blade of the Exile and have a secured kill. Using Teleport in lane phase lets you be in the lane almost all game and head back to lane after ganking another lane. Late game it allows you to backdoor turrets and protect yours. The only other spell I like on Riven is ghost to chase down a Master Yi. Ignite can help if you are not completely confident with landing the killing blow with Blade of the Exile. If you feel that the 4 jumps Riven has is just not enough then Flash works as well.

Lane Phase Play Style

When you are against an opponent at top the last thing you are going to want to do is feed or allow them to farm. The goal is to get your resistances up high enough so you can harass them to make them keep a distance. I recommend starting with Boots because this allows you to be mobile which gets you in and out of there range as well as giving the jungler a bit of a harder time to gank. Broken Wings is what you should max first because all of Riven 's mobility comes from this skill. The goal for an effective harass is to Broken Wings Basic Attack Broken Wings Basic Attack Broken Wings. If this cannot be achieved due to a heavy mass of minions using Broken Wings 3 times rapidly will get the job done. Valor is a great initation spell for a quick burst as well allowing you to close the gap between you and your opponent with a shield to reduce the incoming damage they send towards you. I max out Valor second because this just allows you to stick in a CQC battle much longer and lets you jump around with the lowered cool down. Ki Burst is a great skill to chain you combo with so you can keep the damage on them reducing there health by a large portion. The best combo at level 3 is to Valor basic attack Broken Wings Basic Broken Wings Ki Burst Basic Basic and the last Broken Wings to either hit them one more time or to gain some distance. Another fantastic mechanic of Riven is if you notice you are in a gank too late, then you have the mobility with your skills to evade it! I like to use Ki Burst as soon as someone gets on top of me then Broken Wings Broken Wings and Broken Wings but save Valor for the incoming skillshot you are most likely going to see and either dodge it or block it.

Fighting an enemy 1 on 1

When you fight an enemy one on one the best thing you can do is use Broken Wings to harass and reduce the enemy to about 75% hp that way. Once you feel that you can take the enemy and go for the kill you run towards them and see if they accept the challenge. If they run then thats great you struck fear into there heart and most likely denied them some cs and xp. If they decide to take the challenge look at the bush and see if there jungler is there then quickly look at your minimap checking if he is in another lane. If you are all clear then you basic a few times so they get there hopes up and as soon as you feel the smallest threat use Valor to block damage and get well positioned then once you feel you have them set up just right if they are staying in the fight they should be around 65-70% health. Then use Blade of the Exile, Broken Wings, Basic, Broken Wings, Basic, Broken Wings,Basic, Once they are below 25% health use Blade of the Exile to finish the kill. Use Valor every time it comes off cooldown and Ki Burst if they attempt running away and Broken Wings is not on its third stack. This should result in a kill.

Role in Team.

You are an extremely tanky bruiser. This means that you are not the teams adc you merely just assist the tank (if you have one) in breaking up the damage. In a team fight you can initiate and cc the enemy team as well as clean up kills that no one else could reach. This makes you a target and a threat so focus can be switched to you which is why you have to be mobile and react fast. This is why the Guardian Angel is a must on Riven

Team fighting

When a team fight is about to happen you can either be the initiator or be the second one in the fight. If you are to initiate make sure you are able to take the damage of everyone focusing you and make sure your team is going to commit. The biggest part is to not be afraid of dying. Your role is to help the carries get fed so they can do their job.

You Initiate
To initiate you close the distance with Broken Wings twice then using Blade of the Exile and Valor. Once you activate Blade of the Exile you are a threat weather they realize it or not. Once your team is with you, use Broken Wings one last time to knock up the majority if the enemy team. As the fight starts use Ki Burst to give your team a .75 second period of no consequence. You then use Valor to get to the source of their damage weather it is the adc or the apc. Once you get to them use Broken Wings if it is off cooldown and Ki Burst whenever it is available to use. Once you kill the highest source of damage move to the second highest source of damage while keeping the entire enemy team on you for targeting the carries. If you get killed and are not full build see who did the most damage then counter them.

Ally initiates
If you do not have to initiate then you are the second one in the fight. The goal is to keep the enemy team under crowd control at all times and get to the back of there team to get rid of the carries. When you are the second one in you start with Blade of the Exile followed by Valor to get a shield and closer to the carries Ki Burst when you pass through the center of their team then Broken Wings basic attack basic attack Broken Wings basic attack Broken Wings and using Blade of the Exile once they carry is below 25% health or on the entire enemy team chunking them. Use Ki Burst and Valor every time it is off cd to shield you make you a hard target and to cc. Broken Wings is used when it is off cd and you have a person to target or chase.

Build 1:Countering an AP top

When dealing with an AP top such as Vladimir or Mordekaiser the mobility and resistance is an extremely important factor in being able to handle your lane. The best thing to do is to stop the opponent from farming by using Broken Wings to either harass them or zone them from the minions. With this in mind you need to watch for ganks as well as keep your cs up. The most effective time to harass your opponent would be when you have Valor ready to either initiate with reducing incoming damage or to back out once you have done your job with Broken Wings. If you feel that starting with Boots is not the right decision then start with a Null-Magic Mantle and some potions. If the nuking is too much to handle rush a Hexdrinker before buying Mercury Treads, This allows for you to gain a small amount of damage and a shield if you are near death granting more lane control. If you are still having problems with the nuking do not get a Phage afterwards get a Giants Belt because this gives you more health but reduces the early game damage. Once you have the Giants Belt finish your Hexdrinker by making a Maw of Malmortius bringing back some of your damage output and a better shield allowing for more lane control. On the other hand of things if you are dominating your lane but just not getting the finishing blow a way to make it so the opponent is completely shut down is to rush an early game Sheen and I know you are most likely thinking but the only thing that she benefits is the passive, that is what helps you put out more damage this Broken Wings and a basic attack you now do double damage with the basic making nukes stronger and giving better killing potential.

Pros / Cons

Pros
Counters ap top
When mid lane ganks there is a low success rate.
Ganking mid lane will be easy.
Tank junglers cc is not as effective.

An ad jungler can gank with ease if you are not careful.
Ad mid's can gank if not careful.
If lane phase ends too soon will have trouble with being focused

Build 2:Countering a Hybrid top

This build is mainly for countering an Akali or an ap top with a jungle that likes to gank a lot and happens to be an ad. The goal is to reduce how much damage bot the enemies do allowing for you to escape ganks which wastes the junglers time and you have a higher chance to live which is always a good thing. The early game Phage allows you to chase down people with more beef and damage. the mercury treads allow you to escape from the cc a solo top or jungler.
If the opponent is dealing too much damage replacing the Phage or warmogs armor slot with an Aegis of the Legion can help a lot. If the lane is being handled but you cannot seem to get the finishing blow rush a Sheen early on to add a double damage hit after your abilities. The easiest way to counter a hybrid would be with health since armor and magic resistance cost a bit when you have to constantly purchase both so if a quick solution is needed a giants belt is a great way to go. If you do get killed check the death recap to see what type of damage was doing the most so you know what do get next such as magic damage causing 63% of the damage rush a Hexdrinker but if its a close call such as give or take 5% from 50% the best way to go would be get a Ruby Crystal or giants belt. If you can get a Null-Magic Mantle and a Cloth Armor at the time when purchasing that would be another solution to use.

Pros / Cons

Build 4:Countering an AD top

Starting with the Cloth Armor is a fast way to reduce the damage output from the enemy champion as well as minions which can benefit you during lane phase. When fighting the ad the armor will let you sustain through it longer most likely leaving them running back to your turret. If the damage coming from the enemy is heavy rush a Chain Vest and then grab your Phage afterwards. Rushing the Chain Vest makes the damage output of the enemy miniscule which will result in the enemy trying to avoid a confrontation. This will end with you having lane control. If your damage output needs to be higher then you can always rush an atmas impaler after you get your Phage. The Guardian Angel allows for you to be a much more wreckless person because hey, you have 2 chances! If the team you are fighting has a very small amount of cc and you are not concerned with it whatsoever then grab a Ninja Tabi to reduce how much damage the adc and lane opponent does. If things are getting rough with your lane the best way out is to get more armor and more health if the defense is not the problem then grab some damage. The goal is to have your lane handled.

Additional Info.

If you need to be more defensive then offensive max Valor instead of Broken Wings.
If you feel you need more offense then defense max Ki Burst second instead of Valor.
Nasus is an annoying person that you will have to burst by Broken Wings 3 times Valor when he is about to hit you and finish with Ki Burst. You want to max Ki Burst before Valor when facing Nasus.
If you want to do more damage overall:
Build 1 replace Maw of Malmortius with Bloodthirster
Build 2 replace Warmog's Armor or Frozen Mallet with Atma's Impaler or
Blood Thirster
build 3 replace Maw of Malmortius with a Warmog's Armor or Replace Atma's Impaler with Bloodthirster
IF YOU NEED HELP ASK THE JUNGLER AND LET YOUR LANE GET PUSHED
