If you know how to lane in the early stages of a game and follow this build completely and in that exact same order then it will be very unlikely that anyone could beat you one on one and furthermore making it almost impossible for your team to lose. The majority of the time you will be able to kill 2 people at a time (if not more).
I like to play it relatively safe. Keep your distance and throw in the odd spell flux here and there to gradually lower their health. If you have a half decent laning partner you should be able to pick up a kill or two in this phase of the game. Target their squishies if there are any, otherwise just make sure you dont die early on. Dying early on makes it very hard to come back from (Although i have come back from 0-5 to end up at 16-6 so it can be done.
NOTE: Mejai's Soulstealer isn't for everyone. If you are a beginner ryze and arent confident that you can survive, I suggest that you dont purchase this item. Just follow the rest of the build and probably purchase something like a Void Staff and possibly and Abyssal Scepter. Soulstealer is useless if you cant keep yourself alive more often than not.
On the other hand, if you are confident you can survive more often than not than Soulstealer is a must. The earlier you purchase it the better aswell. Not only does it give you 160AP at 20 stacks, it also decrease cooldowns on all your spells by 15% and also increase you AP more in conjunction with your passive.
Once you have your ulti you should be able to take about 3/4 of someones health using all your spells at once. Making it an easy kill for you and your partner (especially if you use spell flux earlier frequently to lower their health). By this stage you should at least have Tears of Goddess, Boots and Soulstealer. With these items it should make it possible to gank pretty much anyone at around level 7-10 with a 2v1 attack. Coordinate with your team well to set up ganks on their squishy players. More often than not Ryze will pick up the kill in a gank because he dishes out the most splash damage. And if not he will get an assist which will add to his Soulstealer stacks.
You should have a few kills under your belt and at least have Archangel's Staff and be well on your way to achieving Zyhona's Ring. With a few stacks on your side you should be able to remove 3/4 of someones health if not kill them completely. Make sure you keep your distance and dont allow the enemy to silence or stun you. Wait for the team fights to begin before you step in and blow them all to pieces. If you let them target you, there will be no chance of survival and there goes most of your stacks.
I only have 5 complete items in the build because its very rare to play a game where you actually get to the sixth item. However, it is purely up to you on what to choose if your game actually makes it that far. I personally dont have a preference on the sixth item as yet (but if i do ill add it in). I would probably not choose Void Staff as the runes already offer a fair bit of Magic Penetration. I would likely go for Abyssal Scepter, another Zhonya's Ring or even another Archangel's Staff as it stacks on itself.
I chose more Magic Penetration runes as i dont see the use of a few Ability Power runes when you could easily get that AP with your items. And i added in some cooldown runes just because once Ryze gets off all his abilities he cant really defend himself. So the quicker the cooldown the better for him. Also look at trying to get Golem as often as possible after about level 12 or so. It comes in very handy with around a 30 second ultimate cooldown.
NOTE: Although the Ability Power for this build only says 440. Remember that is without the sixth item and without the 20 Soulstealer Stacks and without adding in the passive effect of Archangel's. I guarantee that with a sixth item and 20 stacks you will achieve over 900 AP.
