This is my first build so I'll keep the description short and sweet. I usually mid with this build which is why the rush on the hextech. If you've played him you know swain works mainly on DoTs(damage over time) and that his ultimate also heals him. The Hextech Revolver helps with both of these and assists you in staying in lane longer. Next the shoes...every champ needs shoes and Sorc shoes are a great help due to the magic pen till you get void staff. 3rd you want the rod of ages, Since the longer your out doing your swain thing the more it builds till it caps. Archangel's is a must for most AP heroes in my opinion it's just too good to pass up. The void staff finally, this effectively turns swain into a tank killer, your damage output should be quite nice by now and enough to make the tanks take notice. Now feel free to turn the hextech revolver into will of the ancients even more so if you have other champs in your team that feed of AP and ability vamp. The final Archangels is cause yeah the mana building might not stack. But it'll turn another 3% of your mana into AP. Thus giving you 6% of your mana as AP. Now optional is selling the sorc shoes (if the game lasts long enough) for boots of swiftness. Swain is a slow hero and this helps him escape or chase. All in all I've had very good results using this build and hope it helps people. I see countless swains that don't seem to have item patterns or simply don't understand how the character works. Always make sure to use E and then Q. Also Hitting E then predicting their movement and trapping with W is a great tactic since W's damage is boosted by E. When facing any melee class it's always smart to pop your R. With proper ability power you can withstand their attacks while doing more to them than they are too you. This will only work vs 1 person, 2 at max and with a little skill. Early game always harass with E and only use Q if they get greedy or you've got the kill. This will make your mana last much longer and thus letting you stay in lane longer. If your good enough at last hitting minions your passive will provide you with plenty of mana while laning or in mid, which is why I don't include mana regen items till later. You want that AP boost early game to get you some kills. Another little piece of knowledge I can add is Shaco's LOVE to try and gank you, lure them within tower range and Nevermove em, then just sit back and laugh as the tower does your work for you.

{EDIT} I made the item build a bit more detailed. You can go for archangels or zhonya's for your last item it's really your choice. This build is designed for if you do get ganked or happen to die you don't lose AP(Majai's). And will work great end game.
