Seriously read AquaDragon33's guide. It is a jungling guide but his advice is golden and well thought out. He gives many examples and videos and more information than you could ever want. It's amazing. I plan to write an AD toplane maljar guide at some point but it's mostly just Aqua's build with a tankier core and TP instead of Smite.
Let's be real here. If you're reading this, you already know how to play Maljar. If you don't have a solid grasp on how to play Maljar, please find another guide to get the basics and come back here later. What you may not know is Maljar has some awesome base stats. That means if you build a Rod of Ages, you're asking your opponent to stuff his (or her) big **** right in your void ***. The right way to abuse your stats, is to build a lot of magic pen! I can hear you now! "But tock9!!!! Malzahar needs mana (why do you keep calling him Maljar) and the AP from RoA is good and blah blah ****ing blah". Listen to yourself! You're trying to justify building something that doesn't give you magic pen, AND takes a long *** time to get decent? **** that, just skip to the haunting guise, you even get some health from it. So what's stopping you, are you afraid without all the HP from RoA, you might die? Position better
You've convinced me, how do I be the **** of mid lane
So you've finished the Haunting Guise. This is your first big powerspike. Fear not if you cannot complete the item in one back. Most of the time I like to pick up the Ruby Crystal and Amp Tome and a pot or two, maybe boots if I have the gold for it. Once you have the Haunting Guise, unless you're facing a Galio or something that rushes an Abyssal Scepter, you instantly have kill threat. If they come in range of your Q and they're below 80% health, you CAN kill them. Lead with your Q, put it slightly behind them. Then toss your E on them, finish with the W-R. If they really ****ed up they're in range of your ignite which you can cast while ulting. Your W has 0 cast time so you ALWAYS want to throw it below whoever you're going to ult, it's instant.
Q-E-W-R-Ignite is your kill this mofo right now combo. It is your sick nasty combo because you lead with the silence, destroying their hopes of doing something like flashing away, or killing you first.
If you have your E on the minion wave like a good Maljar, and the enemy is near enough for it to bounce, don't be afraid to throw your full combo down on him right there and then let the E bounce onto him as he's ulted. Guaranteed free tilt "**** MALZ SPACE AIDS ********". You collect your easy kill and push out the lane to back.
Ok, so we're out of mid and into teamfighting
Ult the ****ing ADC, if they have a fizz, ult that piece of ****. It's pretty simple, your same combos apply. If you only have the tiniest chance to ult someone your team can follow up on, REMEMBER TO THROW DOWN YOUR W, IT'S INSTANT. As for extended team fights, this is where it's OKAY to be a *****. Camp around the edges of the fight spamming your spells. Your Q will do a lot of damage by this point but you'll probably only have a chance to hit the tanks with this. THAT IS OKAY, silencing a tank means less CC against your team and that means your ADC and JG/TOP can go more ham while you spam ****. Your W DOES hurt and people don't pay much attention to it because it's not a flashy spell, just throw that out whenever it's up.
IF there are minions around continue to collect your free farm with your E, hopefully you can get a bounce onto one of the enemy champions.
So it happened, another 50 minute game
The same rules apply to mid game teamfighting, the new rule is you have to play like a ***** all the time, don't be the guy to get picked off and throw the game, don't lead the charge into baron pit. DO pick up a blue trinket at this point, it will be more helpful than your yellow trinket.
Use your flash liberally if you can get something out of it. Is the enemy ADC slightly out of position? Punish with a flash W-R, unless they have a QSS, they will die because of your ult's insane scaling.
