Thats so Draven | A guide to playing Draven (Incomplete)

By PaulChrisPrice
Introduction
Hello, I am a low elo player in NA league of legends but I do play a lot of Draven. I have almost 1 million points on Draven and play him even in bad matchups.

Draven is very mechanically intense and needs great jungle awareness and axe positioning. Also, contrary to popular belief, Draven is not an early game champion. The reason is early game (Level 1) you only have your axes[Q] and no movement speed/attack speed buff from blood rush[W]. So yes, he is more of an early-mid game champion and shines when completed 1-2 items. He is a snowballing champion, not a scaling champion. What scales though, is his gold earning potential.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Can snowball really hard
- Good all-in potential
- Can cash out gold with his passive and get a massive gold lead

Cons:

- Hard to position (especially while juggling axes)
- Difficult to win a game without a lead
- You lose 75% of your stacks when you die
- They will try to shut you down early
Runes
For your runes, I suggest using Lethal Tempo as the extra attack speed will help you kite even more easily and give you extra range at full stacks. Sometimes I use Press the Attack if I know I can land all 3 hits on my opponent, or Hail of Blades if I want more burst damage.
Playstyle and Wave management
So let's talk about playstyle. When playing Draven, you must control your axes. Yes, you can let it land randomly sometimes but most of the time you are directing these axes either sideways, backwards, or towards your opponents. This may sound basic but controlling where the axe lands may mean life or death. You can do this by move clicking on the desired direction where you want your axes to go after auto-attacking. Do not catch axes where you know it will put you in danger.

You must have calculated aggression. This is the ability to be aggressive while calculating the possible outcomes of your actions. One may think: (If I go in, can they hit me back? Will I be able to survive if they all-in?, will I win this trade?) all while being aggressive positionally and mechanically. Although sometimes playing too aggressive can be detrimental to your success. Learning to control yourself and analyze when and when not to go in and who to attack will help you with playing Draven.

Analyze which abilities you must avoid in order to survive a team fight. You must have it planned out before the fight even starts by looking at their team comp and being familiar with which abilities will kill you and tailor your next actions accordingly.

Try to control your axes as efficiently as possible. You can use minions, plants, champions, anything that you can auto attacck to reset your axes while navigating throughout the map (safely ofcourse).

Another tip is, you can actually juggle 3 axes at the same time. While you have 2 axes juggling, throw an axe then immediately activate your [Q] while the axe is in mid-air. This will make you start juggling 3 axes. I dont recommend doing this if you're a beginner on Draven and would like emphasize positioning and basic mechanics over advanced mechanics.

Laning Phase:
During laning phase I just try to feel my opponent and get in his face a little bit if possible, studying his movement and how his support reacts. This will however leave you open to punishment, if they are capable of doing so. Also always pressing TAB to see what items they have when they come into lane and analyzing how to play against their team composition.

Once you've done that, you will know if you can just bully them or if you have to respect and play a little bit more smarter than forceful.

Sometimes, they will just play conservatively and kind of just [counter] what you are doing. Because you are Draven after all, you are going in to either hit a minion or hit them to keep your axes going.

If you see an opening, start with Auto-E-Auto-W-Auto-W-Auto-W and so on. (assuming your are level 3 or higher)
Even then, at this point you still have not enough damage to all-in them so dont push your luck too much.

If you are being pushed back and they are too powerful to engage on, or if you can't kill them. Just keep stacking your passive and finding openings, autoing them even once over the course of the laning phase will be enough to wittle them down and secure a kill or two if the jungler comes, or if your support finds a good play.

Worst case scenario, you've been stacking your passive and you die to a gank or get outplayed. you lose 75% of your stacks and you have to start all over again. This is detrimental to a point where if you dont pick it up towards the mid game you will lose out in so much damage and probably be outdamaged by your lane opponent.

Thats fine, this is a team game after all. You will find ways to get back, and if not, GG bro. Lmao, jokes aside I have come back from games that looked unwinnable.

Mid game:

If you haven't been 3 man ganked before mid-game congratulations.

There are three things you can do with the wave:

Push the wave - Pushing the wave is good after you've killed your laners, and/or you know the enemy jungler is not anywhere near bot lane and you want to play more aggressive. Pushing them under turret and taking plates or poking them is a good strategy but beware of mid/jg ganks. Usually ends up in taking turret early. (very risky)

Freeze it - Freezing the wave. There are multiple reasons why you would want to freeze the wave.
1) You are aware/suspicious of a jg gank.
2) You have poked them low enough to zone them away from the minions thus denying them exp and gold.
3) Increase kill pressure. If they walk up to cs or grab exp, you can punish them.
4) Your jg is near and you want the enemy to have as little chance of escaping as possible.

Be cautious as to when you are freezing your lane because if you die while freezing a minion wave/s, you may lose all of it to your own turret. Also a quick note: you have to thin the wave so it doesn't hit your turret if it is a big wave.

You ask, how do you freeze a wave? Well, it's simple. Only last hit the minions, or let the enemy auto attack your minion wave until it is near your turret, without your turret actually hitting the enemy minions. If your turret starts hitting the enemy minions then the wave will push back to them and they may use a freeze against you.

Keep it in the middle - Usually good to do this in the early laning phase as it keeps you safe from jg ganks and prevents them from pushing you into turret and poking you.
