Hi, Im ignix.

Im a Zed/ Talon main and reguraly stream at My twitch channel.
I make this guide to inform newer players about how to play Ekko but also to expand my knowledge about him. I have been playing Ekko for a while now and have managed to get 70K points on him. I can confidentally say that I know the champion very well. The main reason I started playing Ekko is cause I already had experience with other assassin champions and wanted to learn an ap mid lane assassin.
Pros:
Insane waveclear
High mobility
Fun to play
1 shot potential
(Relatively) Strong in low elo
High skill expression
Cons:
Lot of bad matchups
(Relatively) Weak in high elo
Weak laning phase
High skill ceiling
Vulnerable into cc
weak against tanks
Synergies/counters
So, when is Ekko a favorable pick?
This question ofcourse has 2 parts to it: which champions/team compisitions has good synergie with Ekko and: which enemy champions/team compisitions is weak into Ekko?

SYNERGIES


So, which champions synergise with Ekko?
I always feel like champions that do well in teamfights synergise with Ekko. As Ekko you have both the possibility to teamfight and to splitpush. If you have something like a Galio supp who r's you when you w-e in you'll cc their whole team for ~3 secs securing the ez teamfight. As long as you hit a nasty w you'll be really good in teamfights.

COUNTERS


So, which champions get countered by Ekko? Well it's like with all other assassin's, you run down squishy low mobility champs (mostly adc's). But tanks with good cc (such as Ornn or Galio)can seriously ruin your day as Ekko.

Electrocute


Electrocute is really good for Ekko's trading patterns. You generally want to go in for short burst trades which make Electrocute proc 9/10 times. Makes you have a lot more early kill pressure into some lanes.

Sudden Impact


This gives a lot of free mag pen+. This is a must have on Ekko! With every trade you make you'll start your combo with Phase Dive(e) thereby activating Sudden Impact, increasing your damage significantly.

Eyeball Collection


Good rune for snowballing, definitely a solid rune to run. It's not extremely strong but just better than your other options.

Ravenous Hunter


A lot of people go for Ultimate Hunter but the truth is extra healing is just so much better, this is a really good 1v9 rune and greatly increases your sustain.

Absolute Focus


Good rune for your damage output and waveclear(to 1 shot backwave when behind). Just plainly more damage when you have 70% hp.

Gathering Storm


Really good rune allowing you to scale even harder than you already do. I really like to run this rune on Ekko as it makes sure you have got that late game covered.

Flash as with every champion is just really powerful, you can escape death, secure a kill, chase further. ALWAYS take this, a lot of people try to invent but, just don't. Flash is and always has been the most powerful summoner.


Ignite Is a really powerful tool especially into good matchups, it just adds a bit of a better laning phase. It works as a really good tool to secure kills (especially tower dives with your r). It's a summoner which really increases Ekko's lack luster early game, providing him with kill pressure.


You can consider going this into hard matchups. It allows you to catch more waves and splitpush late game as you can always use Teleport to still join teamfights. Ekko is a scaling champion so there are matchups where you have no kill pressure and might as well boost your late game a bit.

Z-Drive Resonance

Ekko's Zero-Drive charges his spells and attacks with temporal energy. The third hit deals bonus damage and, if the target is a champion, Ekko gains accelerated movement speed.

Z-Drive Resonance is really good for trades and to pick off squishy targets. The way your trading works is you use Phase Dive(e) onto someone, q and aa and then run away. To use your passive optimally run away when you activate it (for movement speed) so your enemy can (barely) trade back.

Timewinder]

Ekko throws a temporal grenade that expands into a time-distortion field upon hitting an enemy champion, slowing and damaging anyone caught inside. After a delay, the grenade rewinds back to Ekko, dealing damage on its return.

This is your bread and butter on Ekko! Combining this with Phase Dive already procs both Z-Drive Resonance(passive) and Electrocute. It's also your main form of wave clear as at level 9 (and level 7/8 when ahead) you can start to 1 shot the backwave creating huge roam timers.

Parallel Convergence

Passive: Ekko's basic attacks deal bonus magic damage to low health enemies.
Active: Ekko splits the timeline, creating an anomaly after a few seconds that slows enemies caught inside. If Ekko enters the anomaly, he gains shielding and stuns enemies by suspending them in time.

Parallel Convergence is not necessary in the laning phase but if you land one of these you're almost guaranteed to win your trade. After the laning phase you can seriously win teamfights just of of this ability. I've had games where I was tied and we ended up winning just off of 1 nasty 5 man Parallel Convergence(w).

Phase Dive

Ekko rolls evasively while charging up his Z-Drive. His next attack deals bonus damage and warps reality, teleporting him to his target.

Phase Dive is your main form of engage on Ekko. You can also dodge a lot of abilities by using it to sidestep (and then go onto target).

Chronobreak

Ekko shatters his timeline, becoming untargetable and rewinding to a more favorable point in time. He returns to whenever he was a few seconds ago, and heals for a percentage of the damage received in that duration. Enemies near his arrival zone take massive damage.

This ability really gets people to mold and go 15. It has a huge play make potential and allows you to tower dive, make big engages with your Timewinder(w) and much more. Be sure to keep in mind where you're gonna land before you use this ability, ideally you'll land it on 2+ enemies.

Invade

We take Timewinder(q) level one just because it gives a lot of wave control and is your main form of damage. When you're invading take Phase Dive(e) instead so you can dash onto a target. Q-E-W max, Timewinder(q) for damage and waveclear and after that Phase Dive(e) cause of extra damage and Parallel Convergence(w) last cause leveling it is close to useless.

Early Game

Ekko's early game is relatively weak. His champion identity is a scaling assasin who comes online after he gets his hextech: protobelt. So the goal for your early game is just to survive.
You'll start Corrupting Potion every single game and you'll go for either double Doran's Ring or for 1 Doran's Ring and a Dark Seal. I recommend going double doran's if you dont get an early lead, if you do get an early kill and manage to get ahead I recommend going seal + ring, just because you'll be likely to pop off.

During the laning phase a lot of players will zone you off the minion wave and you'll have to farm with your Timewinder(q). Even though you are a scaling champion you still have a surprising amount of early game pressure (thank you rito, very cool!).
Your general trading pattern will be e1-q-e2-aa. In this combo you'll q immediatly after you use your e. You can use this trick to maximise your chances of hitting q. If you know q isnt gonna het you're gonna use e1-e2-q-aa. You're likely to miss q2 in this combo though so I wouldnt recommend. In both of these combo's your goal is to go in and escape with your passive activating. You can try to just push your lane constantly if the enemy jungler can't punish this, this will allow you're jungler to move a lot more and will give him a lead already. I wouldn't recommend roaming early as you can do with some other champions (so basically Talon). But you can move for an early scuttle. I think Ekko is a great 2v2 champion! You have an insane aoe stun with your w and also aoe damage (q).



Mid game

The mid to late game is when Ekko really shines! In the mid game with ekko you want to split push and cs a lot. You have insane waveclear so see it as a Talon. You're gonna push in a wave and look at the map: can I push this wave in further?
Yes --> Do it
No --> Group with team, the enemies will have to catch the wave you pushed in allowing for a 5v4.
Also something I haven't seen mentioned in a lot of guides is how to play for dragon. So, that being sad you want to come late for drag fights, activate your sweeper and come in from the flank. This will allow you to reach the backline with your w en e. That will make you to just shred and cc those backline champions. In other teamfights you generally want to be engaging with your w. This is the strongest tool in your kit during teamfights! Games are always winnable on this champion. Ekko's teamfight is so incredibly strong (especially in low elo) cause of your w. This makes you an insane engage tool.
