Introduction

Hello and welcome everybody to my Viktor guide.
This is basically my first guide on Mobafire but still, i want to present you why I play Viktor and how i like to play him.
May I invite you to the glorious evolution? We'll show the true power of Viktor and why metal is perfection!

Keep in mind that I'm only giving you advices. You are free to test new things as you wish.
In addition, i try to keep things compact and informative. There are some awesome in-depth guides out there. Check'em!

Pros / Cons

Let's start at the very beginning: Why should i play Viktor?
Pros
+ Nice AOE Ultility (Damage and Stun)
+ Very safe from ganks if
gravitiy field is placed properly
+ Very good poking abilites
+ Quite Tanky for a mage
+ Silence on Chaos Storm can interrupt specific abilites
like Katarina's Death Lotus
or Malzahar's Nether Grasp

Cons
- Squishy early-game
- Skills need quite a lot of mana
- He's missing an inventory slot
- gravitiy field takes some time to stun.
- Hard to play if you can't handle Death Ray

Summoner Spells

My personal favourite Summoner Spells:

Other viable choices:
Clarity If you're kinda new to playing Viktor you can use this skill or if you don't have the right runes and/or masteries.

Exhaust Whenever I know i have to face a Katarina in Mid i consider grabbing this one. Reason is simple: If i don't have my Chaos Storm i won't be able to stop her Death Lotus fast enough. This reduces her damage until i can stun her or buy me some time to get away

Teleport Need to move around all over the place? Not a bad choice!

Heal Bait them, Heal yourself, kill them. Can work, doesn't have to.

Runes

This is basically my prefered rune setup on Viktor. Let me explain you why:

Preferred choices:

Greater Mark of Mana
Pretty much a no-brainer on every caster.

Greater Seal of Scaling Mana Regeneration
Viktor is pretty mana-hungry and it might happen that you can't get your blue everytime (might get stolen by enemy team or your jungler takes it by accident)

Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power
I prefer them over Flat AP for a simple reason. I usually farm at the beginning, only pocking sometimes. By Level 6 these runes will be more useful than Greater Glyph of Ability Power

Greater Quintessence of Ability Power
Just getting that little bit of early damage going so my opponent gets scared, even if it's just a little bit.



Possible choices:

Seals:

Greater Seal of Scaling Ability Power
You want even more AP as time goes on? Grab them, if you can handle your mana without any problems.

Glyphs:

Greater Glyph of Ability Power
You want to be more aggressive early game? Take them.

Greater Glyph of Magic Resist
Some Champs can by a real bully in your lane or nuke you very fast, e.g. LeBlanc, Kassadin or maybe a well-played Ryze. This might help you to survive their damage-output.

Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction or Greater Glyph of Scaling Cooldown Reduction
For some nice cooldown reduction.

Quints:

Greater Quintessence of Scaling Ability Power
For some more AP later on.

There are, of course, still many more runes which you could use, however, I wouldn't really recommend them.

Masteries

21/0/9thus concentrating on dealing damage throughout the entire game.

Important points to get:

Summoner's Wrath
"Only 5 AP? Are you kidding me?" Well, that's a good question. However, it's still better than getting just another +1 AP from Mental Force

Expanded Mind
Trust me, you'll need the extra Mana. In addition, it's kinda hard to progress further in ultility tree without taking it :D

Improved Recall
Sometimes you think 1sec doesn't make any difference....In League of Legends it does often enough.

Meditation
Your skills cost you quite a lot of mana, especially Death Ray. You don't want to miss with that one. If you do, just sit back and regen some Mana ;)


"Why don't you take Swiftness ?"
To be honest, i tried it. I put all points in it so you basically feel a difference but it took me such a long time regenerating my Mana in mid that i decided to not take it.

Viktor's Spells and you


Viktor starts with a Hex Core that provides him with stats and can be upgraded in the store to augment one of his abilities. The Hex Core can only be upgraded once, and cannot be sold back to the store.
It's nice passive, however, i have to admit that it really sucks sometimes missing an inventory slot. But this is what makes Viktor so interesting ;-)





Viktor blasts an enemy unit for 80 / 125 / 170 / 215 / 260 (+65% of ability power) magic damage, returning 40% of the damage dealt as a shield for 3 seconds.
Quite a cool spell since it deals quite a lot of damage and provides you with a nice shield. Don't expect too much from that shield however. It absorbs only very little damage and you have to get rather close to be able to use this ability.





Viktor conjures a gravitational imprisonment device, slowing all enemies by 28 / 32 / 36 / 40 / 44% of their Movement Speed and stacks every 0.5 seconds. At 3 stacks the target will be stunned for 1.5 seconds.
This is one of the main reasons why i play Viktor. This ability can decide teamfights and help you escape. With this ability you can easily block jungle entrances and passages.
Keep in mind, however, that it takes quite some time until someone is stunned.
A fast Rammus can just roll through it.





Viktor uses his robotic arm to fire a chaos beam that cuts across the field in a line, dealing 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+70% of ability power) magic damage to every enemy in its path.
One of the most interesting skills in the game. It's used just as Rumble's The Equalizer. Once you get the feeling for it you can easily hit enemies from far away!
HINT: You can use the laser to spot areas on the map. Do you have that strange feeling that the jungler is in one of the bushes nearby? Laser it and check it out!





Viktor conjures a singularity at the target location, dealing 150 / 250 / 350 (+55% of ability power) magic damage and silencing enemies in the area for 0.5 seconds.

As it churns, it deals 50 / 75 / 100 (+25% of ability power) magic damage every second to nearby enemies for 7 seconds. The storm moves faster the closer it is to Viktor.

Activating this ability again while the singularity is active will redirect it.

I love this ulti. If place correctly in teamfights your enemies are already missing quite a lot of HP. After it's casted it follows the Champion you casted it on.
HINT: It follows invisible targets. Cast it on Akali or Talon before they disappear. That way you know where they are and you can hit them with your Death Ray.

Items

Now we're finally getting to the part where it's getting interesting.
First of all, I will never be able to tell you what you should buy every game! If you want to play Viktor you need to be able to judge a certain situation and react to it.

However, I can tell you which item's are nice to get and why.

Starting items:

I start with Doran's Ring if I'm sure I don't need to dodge Skillshots in mid and their Jungler can't get me early. Sometimes I grab this to have the +100HP to survive Shaco ganks]

Helps you to dodge abilites, get away from ganks and with the Heal Potions you have some sustain in lane.

Core Items:

Gives you a nice overall: Health, Ability Power AND a very nice passive. If you cast Chaos Storm the enemies just have to flash aways to escape your ultimate. It also helps you chasing enemies if you hit them with your Death Ray.

Probably one of THE most important items on casters. Gives you a lot of AP
SPACE
Provides sustain in lane and teamfights. In case you have another caster in your team it's even better to get it.

Boots of Choice:

I usually grab them to get a little bit more damage going.

I grab them if i need some Mres desperatly. This might be the case if you are either getting destroyed by the enemy caster and a come-back might be hard OR when laning against: Veigar, Ryze, Kassadin or LeBlanc

The Cooldown reduction is pretty nice on Viktor. Another great choice.

Other viable items:

If had to lane one of the above mentioned champions you probably have to buy a Negatron Cloak as well. Get this item to survive their burst and hit back.

I'm not a big fan of this item since it delays my build and damage a lot and i can easily handle my Mana. If you think you need this item, go get it. The AP boost it nice, but since you are playing Viktor you have to consider what you really need and what you just want to have

Enemy are stacking HP but no Mres? Want some cooldown reduction? Overall a nice item
SPACE
Enemies try to stack Mres? You want to laser their tank as well? Nothing can tank you anymore :P Also adds a nice amount of AP

You want to live a little bit long so your Chaos Storm can kill everybody while you're untouchable? Nice item.

Will of Ancients vs. Rod of Ages

Some people might wonder why I'm going for Will of the Ancients instead of Rod of Ages.
Let me show you first, what these items provide:
SPACE
+ Total price: 2100 Gold
+ 80AP in total
+ 20% Spellvamp
+ Nice aura for other casters in your team
- No Health Bonus
- No Mana Bonus
- No Health Regen upon leveling up
SPACE
+ 450 HP + 180 HP after 10 Minutes
+ 525 Mana + 200 Mana after 10 Minutes
+ 60 AP + 20 AP after 10 Minutes
+ Restores Mana and Health upon leveling up
- No Spellvamp
- More expensive than Will of the Ancients: 3035 Gold
- Takes some Time to reach maximum potency,
thus you kinda HAVE TO build it early

This is just a short look on the items. So, why am I building Will of the Ancients in my preferred build instead of Rod of Ages?
The item I wanted to get as fast as possible is Rylai's Crystal Scepter so people can't just escape my skills, especially Chaos Storm. If they want to get away from it they have to split.
So I was searching for a cheap item which grants me some survivability in lane. Will of the Ancients was just the right choice for me. Not only it grants spellvamp it also provides some nice AP early on. It's basically the same as on Rod of Ages.
The amount of health I get from Rylai's Crystal Scepter has always been enough in most situations.


Summary:

I like both items and against some bursters I rather pick Rod of Ages because if you survive their burst you can hit back. It's basically up to your personal preference. Both items work quite well on Viktor!

The Hexcore and you

Once in a while you have to choose your upgrade on your Hexcore.
Your choices are: Augment: Death, Augment: Gravity or Augment: Power

Before I go on I want to give you a link to a very interesting site:

I was a bit shocked how much I'm actually paying for the upgrade on Augment: Power.

Anyhow, let's check the upgrades and which one you might want to get




Cost on all of them: 1000 Gold




  • +3 Ability Power per level
  • +45 Ability power
  • Death Ray sets fire to enemies, dealing 30% additional magic damage over 4 seconds.

This upgrade used to be my favorite choice. I had to realize that this upgrade grants nothing you need in late game. The DoT on it is only good for farming. The damage you deal is so small it's not even noticeable. Extra AP is nice but other than that it's nothing that can keep you alive in teamfights. I just prefer utility over pure damage.





  • +3 Ability Power per level
  • +200 Mana
  • +10% Cooldown Reduction +5 Mana Regen per 5 seconds
  • Gravity Field has an additional 30% cast range.

This is my new favorite upgrade. I've tested in quite a lot of games and once a teamfight is starting you will love this upgrade. Thanks to increased cast range you can "controll" the battle before you have to enter it, thus making it very hard for your opponents to catch you if you stay back at first.
The cooldown reduction is quite nice and with CDR Masteries, sorcerer's boots and blue buff you get your maximum of 40% CDR. Mana is nice but nothing special. Mana-Regen is another stat you barely notice.





  • +3 Ability Power per level
  • +220 Health
  • +6 Health-Regen per level
  • Power Transfer increases Viktor's Movement Speed by 30% for 3 seconds.

This upgrade is really nice if you like poking and chasing enemies. In combination with Rylai's Crystal Scepter noone can escape or chase you. The Health is ok, Health Regeneration feels more like a wasted stat on this item.
Increased movement speed let's you run around your enemies which can be very important since you have to get rather close.
Overall not a bad choice.

Basically it's Chaos Storm> Death Ray> Power Transfer> Gravity Field

Why do you max Death Ray first?
I used to max Power Transfer but had to realize that i'm sometimes taking more damage than having dealt. By maxing my Laser first i can easily hit enemies while staying in safe distance. The more damage i deal with the laser the more my opponent stays away from me

Are there any situations when i shouldn't follow this skill order?
Yes, definetly!
If you are laning against a Kassadin you should consider maxing Power Transfer first.
He can easily dodge your laser with his Riftwalk and as soon he's infront of you the only thing you can do before being silence by Null Sphere is throwing one Power Transfer. This one Q could save your life.

Enemy jungler is a Shaco or anything else that can use stealth?
Grab Gravity Field on level 2 so you can escape his ganks. Don't push your lane!

Farming

Focus on last-hitting. Use your Power Transfer now and then to poke your opponent in case he's getting closer to you.
Once you have Blue Buff or if you can handle your mana use Death Ray to keep your opponent away from minions and on low health.
Never waste your mana or you won't be able to escape a gank!
If getting ganked use your Gravity Field a bit infront of you, right on yourself or on the enemy. Walk towards your tower and use Death Ray to hit the chasers.
Remember: While using Death Ray you can still keep on walking! No animation is needed.

That way you can dodge abilities while firing back at your opponent.

Summary

Viktor is such a fun Champion once you get used to him and his abilites!
He's not like a typical AP caster or whatever you expect from one.
If you think a caster desperatly needs 6 free inventory slots, you never tried Viktor before :D

This guide is still not completed and I'm pretty sure it's not flawless either.
