Introduction

Hi, I'm Smpl, or Keegan. Im a Silver 1 player on NA that has been playing League of Legends since June of 2012. I prefer to play assassin carry champions, such as Aatrox, Rengar, Ahri, and Zed. My main roles are Top Lane and Middle, and I play a lot of solo queue :). This is my first guide, so any feedback is appreciated, and enjoy.

Pros/Cons To Aatrox

Pros
-High Sustain
-Great 1v1 Potential
-Fast Turret Pushing
-Quick ability to take down objectives
-Great teamfight presence

Cons
-Low Multi Target Damage Potential (As most of his damage comes from auto attacks)
-Low Poke Unless maxing E
-Ganking potential is based on if you can hit Q or land a very slim E

Skill Sequence

In The Top Lane
By maxing out your Blades of Torment first, it provides you poke in lane against most melee laners, and alot of disengage on ganks. Maxing W second helps for sustain with Blood Thirst, and the damage on Blood Price. Q isn't necessary to put alot of points into until you have to as it is mainly just for engage/disengage and provides little damage compared to your W and E. Massacre should be leveled every 5th level from level 6 as per usual with most champions.

In The Jungle
Changing around the leveling from the top lane, in the jungle, Aatrox relies on quick clear and ganking ability. To do this, you must first max out your Blood Thirst / Blood Price W skill. This provides great sustain and clearing potential in the jungle. By maxing your Blades of Torment E skill second, it also provides the great slow/gank potential that Aatrox relies on in the jungle. With the same reasoning as in top lane, Q isn't necessary to put alot of points into until you have to as it is mainly just for engage/disengage and provides little damage compared to your W and E. Although it does provide most of your ganking potential, it only needs single point early game to be beneficial. Massacre, again, should be leveled every 5th level from level 6 as per usual with most champions.

Summoner Spells

In The Top Lane
For summoner spells, Flash and Ignite are necessary items for most solo laners. Ignite could be swapped out for Teleport for split pushing power, or Flash could be swapped out for Ghost, giving you more chasng potential.

In The Jungle
For Aatrox's spells in the jungle, I recommend Flash and Smite, standard for most junglers. If you need to be able to chase, however, I would recommend taking Ghost in the place of Flash.

Items

For Aatrox in laning phase and into late game, you want to rush Blade of the Ruined King, and then pick up boots that suit your lane matchup. For example, if you are facing and AP caster top, Mercury's Treads are your best option in the laning phase, and if the enemy team is stacking heavy AP. The same goes for Armor against a team stacking heavy AD, you would want to build Ninja Tabi. These boots are meant for the lane being very even or your lane being behind. If however you are crushing lane phase and feel like your lowered cooldowns would be beneficial, pick up Ionian Boots of Lucidity.

Spirit Visage is a core item on Aatrox top lane, and you don't have to just be against an AP laner. The extra CDR, Health, Health Regen, and increased healing effects work in sync with Aatrox's Blood Thirst and passive, increasing his healing and sustain in fights by a tremendous amount. I suggest building this item third. The next 3 items in your build are entirely up to your matchup in game. If you are ahead and can carry your team in fights, I suggest picking up a Guardian Angel, Zephyr, or Bloodthirster. If, however, you need the tankiness for your team and are behind, pick up health items such as Randuin's Omen (For your engage or disengage with its active ability) or Warmog's Armor.

Runes

For Aatrox's runes, I suggest a mix of Armor and Magic Resist, with AD Marks and Lifesteal Quints. The armor and scaling magic resist help you to survive your lane or teamfights, giving you extra benefit in trades.

For marks, I suggest AD. The AD marks Give roughly 9 extra AD to start off your lane, and especially help with farming. I recommend AD marks over Armor Pen. for your trading and farming, as Aatrox has little poke, and requires farm and early trades to be successful. Adding onto trades early game, Lifesteal quints provide you with 6 bonus lifesteal stacked on top of your Blood Thirst active to sustain trades extremely well, and sustain yourself from poke by pushing waves and healing off of creeps.

Masteries

In The Top Lane
For playing Aatrox in top lane, your main priority is to push down turrets and pick up kills. With 4 points into Fury and a point into Destruction, it allows you to force down turrets much quicker while your counterpart is pushed back. Using another 16 points in the offense tree within basic AD is standard, and should be used unless tankiness is needed for your team

By using 9 points in Defense, you give yourself a bit of tankiness and sustain, allowing you to survive most trades without a problem. If you are against an AD laner, swap out the 2 points in Resistance for 2 in Hardiness.

If you want to be a tankier Aatrox in top lane, I recommend these masteries;
In The Jungle
While playing Aatrox in the jungle, no matter if you are a carry or tank jungler, always run 9-21-0. The 9 points in the offense tree still gives you the fast clear you need, with 3 points of attack speed, 4 points of attack damage, and bonus damage to minions. Having 21 points in offense provides you with the tankiness in early game that you will need for ganking in general. You want to show up to a lane, bait damage, and wreck face. By using 21 defensive points, you will take a lot less damage from ganks, while still providing yourself with sustain, and the ability to jump on a carry.

Summary and Playing Aatrox

When played correctly,, Aatrox has the ability to jump on the carry and provide crowd control for his team through the use of Dark Flight and Blades of Torment. Aatrox has the ability to deal #TonsOfDamage through being a carry, or even a tank, with the use of Massacre and Blood Price. Combined with his insane auto attack damage, Aatrox is a major presence in fights, and can single-handedly destroy any one of the opponents carries.

Thank you for reading my guide to Aatrox, both In The Top Lane, and In The Jungle. Feedback is always appreciated.
