Looks like an interesting approach to me. I don't have the champ, so I can't test it. But I like how you don't play too squishy (early Rod of Ages).

If I were playing this, I would probably get Null-Magic Mantle around the same time as Fiendish Codex. In most games, that 400-gold item makes a big difference.
