Yes, it is a reference to a D&D spell.

Kassadin is meant to be built as a hybrid, and that's how I build him. Pretty much the above build is how the items will be set up. Your build order would be:

1. Tear of the Goddess
2. Beserker's Greaves
3. Vampiric Scepter
4. Stinger
5. Manamune (From 1)
6. Avarice Blade
7. Nashor's Tooth (From 4)
8. Hextech Gunblade (From 3)
9. Sheen
10. Youmuu's Ghostblade (From 6)
11. Lich Bane (From 9)

That is the optimal build order, but your enemies may dictate a different build order for you.

Be buying wards the entire way through, and use the wards to watch the bushes, and use Clairvoyance to watch enemy movement early on. If anyone tries to gank you, gank them back. They will not be expecting you to jump on them while they are waiting in the bushes.

If you want to mid, that shouldn't be a problem against most enemies. Know when to move in to get last hits on minions, and use your Q to harass the enemy as much as possible. The reason to level it up first is to have a shot to harass with during early leveling.

When you get the chance, burst the enemy down, and drop an ignite on them, and if you timed it right, you should be able to get a kill or two before hitting level 6. If you are with a laning partner, coordinate with them, and possibly use your Q against the support on that lane to keep it from helping your target. Otherwise, drop Q and E on your target.

Once you have riftwalk, move carefully through the jungles, and watch for enemy movement in the jungles. Use Clairvoyance to catch enemies trying to get a neutral monster buff, and gank them as they do it. Catching the enemy alone will allow you to get a few kills without your team, and give you valuable buffs.

Once the team begins to move and push, use Clairvoyance to watch the enemy's movement, and catch enemies when they hide in bushes. You will find a huge advantage in picking off the stragglers in between nuking down their squishies during team engagements.

Really, this Kassadin doesn't play too much differently than any other hybrid Kassadin, except that he will be on the hunt, and stalking prey. This is a mix between the original Black Blade of Disaster build and the Scryer of the Void build.
