The Beginning
For abilities I always start with Empowerment, then Leap Strike followed by Counter Strike. I continue to max out Empowerment and Grandmaster's Might. When I can no longer do these Leap Strike is next in line then finally Counter Strike.
Masteries are all put into Offense. Some people choose a mix of them all, but I mainly prefer to go all out. I find that depending on your play style is how you should place your Masteries.
Since I'm not level 30 yet I have yet to finalize my Rune setup.
You learn quickly with Jax what enemies you can fight against and what ones you can't. Jax for the first few levels should strictly farm mobs. Harass enemy Champions but try to avoid all out combat. Once level 6 you can begin pressing enemy Champions harder with your Grandmaster's Might. The key to battle is to time your abilities out. Once Grandmaster's Might is unlocked every 3rd strike deals a blast of damage. If you can time this out and use an ability on it you will do major damage.
Champion battle differs on the type of opponent. In the most basic form though for Jax to be effective you have to be right beside your enemy. He excels in on 1 vs 1 combat. I start with Counter Strike stunning the enemy. Follow this up with Grandmaster's Might and a barrage of Empowerment the enemies health quickly goes down. If they get away Leap Strike with Empowerment finishes them off. Blade of the Ruined King also helps slow the enemy. Ghost can be an effective way to escape a deadly situation or caught up to your opponent to get that final blow.
