Not Updated For Current Season
This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Aatrox isn't a good champion at the moment, but he can still be a danger to you. You only really need to watch out for Blood well.
Cho'Gath
You can abuse him before level 6. When you ult, however, he can just knock you up and silence you. A good Cho'gath should not be underestimated.
Renekton
Levels 2-5 he will destroy you, stay away from minions and stay back, especially if he has ignite. Level 6 and above you can crush him when he goes in.
Bard
Well, like most ranged top-laners, he's pretty annoying. But he also counters Illaoi pretty hard. His e can be used to escape your ult, his ult can completely counter your ult, and his q can also counter you ult if he stuns you. Don't try and kill him, just get a little bit of jungler help if possible.
Camille
If she uses her ult on you, she kills herself.
Darius
This is a skill matchup, the better player wins. If he gets a Mortal reminder you lose.
Dr. Mundo
Early game you can punish him hard, if he goes in on you mid-game just kill him. But if he makes it to late game, you're gonna have to pick your fights wisely. You can get a [[Mortal reminder]] here.
Ekko
Ekko can be a real annoyance, he can dodge your ability's pretty easily, stun you, and overall just do a ton of damage. But if you're good, you can outplay him.
Fiora
She can all-in you level 2 and late-game can destroy you with her % max health true damage. The only way to "win" this match-up is to play safe and hope that she makes mistakes, or get jungle help. She can also parry your Test of spirit.
Fizz
If he goes tank, play safe in the early game and you'll be alright. If he goes ap, you're probably screwed for later on, but you can still outplay him.
Galio
Galio has some nice poke with his Winds of War, and can taunt you while you're in ult. But he can only kill you early on, mid-late game you can easily kill him, as his damage doesn't scale that well.
Gangplank
Easy matchup early to mid-game, but if you let him get to late-game, you're screwed. Destroy his barrels, if you let a Gangplank use his Powder keg, you've given him the lane.
Garen
When he goes in Tentacle Smash and Test of Spirit him. He's not a problem at all late-game.
Gnar
Gnar can poke you from range with his auto attacks or his Boomerang Throw. And a good Gnar with stun you while in your ult, he can also easily escape your ult with his hyper or wallop.
Gragas
Gragas can kill you early game if you don't play it safe. Otherwise this lane is going to be pretty kill-free, since even if he all-ins you he can just Explosive Cask you away if things go wrong.
Irelia
I haven't played against many Irelia players, but I every one I have played against I've beaten in lane. When you see her go in just pull out her soul and ult, if she stays she dies.
Jarvan IV
Same thing with Camille, if he ults, he dies.
Jax
Jax isn't a problem early game or mid game, but late game he can kill you pretty easily. His ult makes him a tank when he's in your ult, and he just pumps out damage. He can easily 2v1 as well if he's ahead. When he goes in try to pull out his soul and ult.
Jayce
Jayce can be a pain sometimes, but he really isn't a problem if you're ahead. The only major thing is that he can [[Thundering Blow]] you out of your ult. Just play safe early game and punish him when he goes in.
Kayle
Kayle is a huge Illaoi counter, she can take literally no damage in your ult, she has high range, along with Magic Resist and armor shred. If she gets to late-game it's game over. Try and lane swap or get jungler to help.
Kennen
If it's ap Kennen, you can just Test of Spirit and ult him when he goes in. If it's on-hit Kennen, you're pretty screwed.
Kled
Kled is all about going in, you can punish this. If he's extremely good he can just outplay you and kill you, otherwise, you're gonna do fine. Just don't try and Test of Spirit him when he has his Jousting up.
Lulu
I don't see many Lulu top picks, but I guarantee that this will be a terrible matchup. When you ult she can just Whimsy you and kill you. Even though she doesn't do much damage, shes still a huge problem.
Malphite
Not a big problem, just don't try and tower-dive him.
Maokai
After the rework he isn't a big threat to you. Just make sure not to face check any bushes.
Master Yi
I haven't been against many Yi top picks, but this is a skill match up, he can Alpha Strike to dodge your tentacles and Meditate while you ult him. Can be an annoyance late-game.
Mordekaiser
Can't really do anything against you. Every time he walks up, punish him.
Nasus
Don't let him farm, punish him when he tries to get farm. Late-game even if he has a decent amount of stacks you can still kill him due to your armor shred from The Black Cleaver. Also, make sure he doesn't split push.
Nautilus
He's pretty much never going to kill you. But when late-game comes around you're never going to kill him either.
Nocturne
Nocturne can be a real pain if he gets ahead, otherwise, be careful of his Unspeakable Horror, as it can fear you for up to 2.25 seconds.
Nunu & Willump
Nunu can be a bully early-game, but after that he can never really kill you, unless he gets a full charged Absolute Zero on you mid-game.
Olaf
Olaf goes in, Olaf dies.
Pantheon
Pantheon can be a bit annoying but when he goes in with Aegis of Zeonia you can just Test of spirit him and ult him.
Poppy
Poppy can't kill you, and late-game you can't kill her, but she's extremely annoying when uses her Keeper's Verdict on you, though you can dodge it.
Quinn
Quinn hard punishes Illaoi, she can dodge all of your ability's and just kill you instantly. Swap lanes or get jungle help.
Rakan
Rakan cannot kill you, but he can keep you crowd controlled and get out of your ult extremely easily.
Rammus
Early-game and mid-game you can punish him hard and he can't do much to you, but late-game he'll just run you down and kill you, though you might be able to kill him.
Riven
This is a skill match up, a good Riven can and will destroy you. However, a decent or bad Riven you can kill with ease.
Rumble
This is a skill match up, kills can go either way. Try and punish him when he tries to farm with his Flamespitter.
Sejuani
The new Sejuani is pretty powerful, but her jungling is a lot better than her laning. She doesn't do any damage in mid-late game, besides her Permafrost.
Shaco
A good Shaco will beat you up, he can dodge every thing you have with his Deceive, fear you and deal a ton of damage with his Jack in the Box, slow you with his Two-shiv poison, and bamboozle you with his Hallucinate.
Shen
You can destroy Shen mid-game, but if he's good, he can always kill you. Always tell your team when his ult is ready.
Singed
Do not chase him, I cannot stress how important this point is. He can fling you around deal a ton of damage do you while being a tank and being able to easily get out of your ult.
Sion
Watch out for his early and mid game. He can go in a bush and charge up his Decimating Smash without you even knowing, then chunk you for half your health and just kill you.
Skarner
Skarner can't really kill you in mid-late game, but he can drag you into his team and cancel your ult with his Impale.
Swain
Haven't been against many Swain players, but he can be extremely annoying. Try to get your team to help. You might get a Mortal Reminder here.
Tahm Kench
Tahm Kench can easily take you out of your ult and stun you while being extremely tanky. The only way to kill him is to try and get you adc to focus him.
Talon
He can get out of your ult pretty easily. Just try and watch out for his level 2 all-in.
Teemo
Teemo can destroy you, his range and his Blinding dart can and will stop you from killing him. Get some jungler help.
Trundle
Haven't gone against many Trundle players, but you can just kill him when he tries to all in you. He has no range, punish him when he goes up.
Urgot
Urgot has some pretty high range and his ult can just counter your ult entirely, though if you have your team with you he suicides doing it.
Vayne
Vayne is extremely annoying with her high mobility and her % max health true damage. Don't fight her, get an assassin to kill her.
Vladimir
Vlad has range and can get out of your ult easily, he's pretty powerful at the moment, so watch out for him.
Akali
If Akali gets a kill the lane is over unless you get jungler help, if you pull out her soul and she still goes in on you, you can easily kill her.
Warwick
Warwick can suppress you and fear you, while high damage reduction. However, he will have some trouble killing you as his damage against juggernauts like Illaoi is pretty low.
Wukong
Wukong is pretty easy to fight 1v1, just play attention to his clone.
Xin Zhao
Xin can only kill you in the early game, after that if he goes in on you he will die.
Yasuo
This partially a skill match up, a good Yasuo can destroy you, but in mid-game you'll most likely be able to kill him. Try and dodge his tornadoes even in the heat of battle.
Yorick
Yorick can do some damage early game, but your Test of spirit goes through his minions, his maiden, and his wall. If he goes in on you he's an easy kill.
Zac
I don't see much Zac top, but with this new rework wait until he ults before you ult, so when he ults you into his team you can just destroy them all.
Hi, my name's Marc, I'm an Illaoi main with over 100K mastery points. I play Illaoi for fun, though I do have a very respectable win rate of 85% on her. I'm a average mid-silver player and I don't play ranked often. I play on the NA server and frequently get flamed for playing an "easy champ".
Pros and Cons of Illaoi
Pros and Cons of Illaoi
Pros
High damage
Great team-fighting
1v5 Penta-kill potential
Very fun
High tank stats
Cons
Can be kited easily
You will often get flamed for playing an "easy champ"
Has some of the best counter-play in the game
Not the greatest early-game
No hard cc
No gap-closers
Spawns Tentacles every 20-12 seconds on terrain that take 2 auto attacks to kill when Illaoi is within a certain range of them. One auto if she is far away from them. Your tentacles also heal 5% of your missing health for every hit on an enemy champion.
This is your bread and butter, when looking to fight, make sure you have at least 2 tentacles nearby. Also, once you get Black Cleaver your tentacles will be able to kill the back line of minions in one hit.
Tentacle Smash
Tentacle Smash summons a tentacle that smashes in the direction that the ability was cast. Tentacle Smash also has a passive that makes allof your tentacles do more damage.
This is your main harass and farming ability, it has a decent range and is pretty wide. Max this first.
Harsh Lesson
Harsh Lesson makes your next auto attack within the next 7 seconds gain bonus range and makes you leap to your target, doing bonus damage equal to 2-5% ( + 2% per 100 ad ) of your targets maximum health, capped at 300 against monsters. Any nearby tentacles will slam at your target. It is also an auto attack reset.
This is an ability that is underestimated. The damage on the auto attack isn't much, but the if you have more than 2 tentacles around you, you can do some insane damage.
Test of Spirit
Test of Spirit lets you pull out an enemies soul, any damage dealt to the soul will deal a percentage(25%-45% + 8% per 100 ad)of the damage to your target. If your target leaves the area which their soul is in, or the soul gets destroyed, then the target will have a passive on them which spawns a tentacle around them that will slam at them that lasts for 12 seconds. The soul lasts for 10 seconds and is decreased by 1 second for every instance of damage that the target does to Illaoi.
This can do insane amounts of damage if you hit both the soul and the target, as you'll be doing about 50% more damage to them per tentacle at max rank. It also counts as a champion for your ultimate. Upgrade this second.
Leap of Faith
Leap of Faith is Illaoi's ultimate, and boy, is it fun. Leap of Faith makes Illaoi leap in the air and slam her idol into the ground, dealing damage to all enemies in the radius. It spawns a tentacle for each champion and soul hit, makes tentacles slam 50% faster, and makes the cooldown of Harsh Lesson go down to 2 seconds.
This can let you pull of 1v5 plays with this, and you can 1-shot squishy champs with it too, especially if you pull out their soul. Upgrade this whenever you can.
Laning
Laning
When you're laning as Illaoi you want to get damage off without using up too much of your mana. By this, I mean you should use Tentacle Smash sparingly, as it can cost up to 60 mana.
Make sure that once you hit level 6, you should always have enough mana for a Test of Spirit, Leap of Faith, and multiple of Harsh Lesson.
Also, when you farm, use your Harsh Lesson as it costs less mana and does the same damage ( or more if you have more than 1 tentacle nearby ). Also, help yourself to the enemy blue, or ask your jungler for blue, as you need the mana.
Team fighting
Team fighting
As Illaoi you always want to get a good ult off. In team fights you should always be looking for a good opportunity to ult. If you have Flash, then you should Test of Spirit, Flash in, then Leap of Faith to get huge amounts of damage on the enemy team.
Conclusion
Conclusion
