malzahar is one of the few mages who is good in the top lane due to his passive which allows him a decent amount of defense from bruisers

Runes

phase rush is for the bonus ms and slow resist so you can get away after using your combo
mana flow band is for more mana so you don't have to back
you are going to be at close to full health usually so absolute focus is a good rune
you are going to be poking a lot so scorch is going to give you some more dps
