This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Passive : if you see his sword glowing red then his next basic attack will be empowered, try to block that with your W.
Q : Deny his 1st and 2nd Q by walking towards him, if you're sure that his 3rd Q lands then counter that by dashing through him to not get hit and follow that by Q + 3 empowered attacks.
W : you can escape the chains by walking left/right to the closest edge and not away from him.
E : That is the ability you must be most aware of since he can reposition his Q midcast with his E ability, if that happens on 1st/2nd Q try to dash away and stay safe until cooldowns are reset.
TIPS : it is helpful not to stay in the minion wave as they can block your escape and make you an easier target. Try to build Bramble Vest early in the game as it helps lowering his healing potential.
Ignite can help in this matchup.
Camille
Passive : her passive will give her an adaptive shield when she engages on enemies with a cooldown of 16 seconds that scales to 10 seconds later in the game, trading with her while she got passive up will result in her winning the trade.
Q : Her Q has 2 casts, her 1st Q is a slightly empowered basic attack that also give her movement speed, after 1.5 seconds of her 1st attack she can recast Q for another empowered attack this time with true damage, you need to block that with your W or get out of her reach asap.
W : Camille's W ability has 2 layers, both layers deal damage but the outer layer also slows and if she hits a champion with the outer layer she gets some percentage of the damage done as heal back. The best play is to dodge the skill, if you can't then go in the inner layer. Notice that she also has ghosting while casting W.
E : Her 1st cast of the E ability makes her cling to a wall/structure, the 2nd cast makes her dash at an enemy target, if champions are hit they get stunned. Stay away from walls for getting time to react and dodge her E or block it with Q+W.
R: Camille lunge at a target and traps it in a hexagonal arena, allies of the target are pushed away and her basic attacks in the arena deal additional damage based on enemy's current health.
What you should be aware of is that she can dodge abilities with her ultimate because she becomes untargetable midair.
Cho'Gath
Q: Spawns a circle on the ground that after 0.5 seconds knocks up any enemies caught in it and slows them by 60% for an additional 1.5 seconds, you can dodge that easily, just make sure you don't stand in the minion wave as they may block your retreat.
W: Cho screams in a cone, any enemies caught in it are silenced. Be aware of that when you engage as he may delay your abilities.
R: You should always be aware of your health bar since his ultimate deals true damage and can execute you. If he tries to use ultimate on one of your allies don't rush with your ultimate to save them, true damage will bypass any shields resulting in you wasting your ultimate.
The matchup itself is pretty easy, you can set him behind right from the start by either a level 1 cheese or a level 1 push contest, get level 2 before him and try an extended trade.
Darius
Passive : his passive deals damage over time and can be stacked up to 5 times, his passive can be triggered by basic attacks, his Q or his W. Notice that reaching 5 stacks will also boost his damage.
Q :After a 0.75 seconds delay he spins in a circle damaging enemies, if any enemy champions are hit Darius heals himself 15% of his missing health for every champion hit up to 45%. To win the matchup you must not let him hit this ability by any means, you can counter it by using E/Flash inside/outside the circle depending on the situation.
W: slows enemies hit by 90% for 1 second, it is also a basic attack reset, you can block it with your W and it is noticeable by a red blade spinning on the middle of his axe and a sound effect.
E : If his E hits will pull you towards him...meh!?
R : Darius will execute any champion that is low enough on health and has 5 stacks of his passive on it, do not try to block that with your ultimate because it deals true damage and it will bypass your shield resulting in you wasting your ultimate.
Do not fight him at level 1, specially if he has ghost/ignite+W, try to notice wich skill he got 1st. Do not let him get xp advantage, from level 2 let him engage you can make short trades with grasp + empowered Q as long as you don't get hit by his Q. From level 3 use your W to block his W and make sure you back before he gets 5 stacks of passive on you. If he gets as low as half hp and wastes any cooldown you can kill him with a long trade. To win a long trade with Darius you must be sure that you utilise your passive to the fullest potential, that means your 1st ability that you use in that trade must hit him, either Q or E to get shorter cooldown on passive and trigger it twice in the trade!!!!!
Fiora
Passive : Her passive triggers one of four weak spots arround you while she is nearby, if she attacks either by basic attack or by using her Q from the direction her passive points on you she will deal true damage based on your maximum hp and get movement speed to retreat, this means she will poke a lot with a hit and run style throughout the lane phase. you can use your W to block her basics or Q. Some other trick against her passive/ultimate would be to walk up very close to a wall and try to hide that passive stack to deny her the ability to hit it.
Q : her Q makes her lunge at an enemy and does hit her passive.
W: you should be aware not to taunt her while she has her W up since she can deny your taunt and stun you in return. She can also combo her W + Q to try and catch you from an unexpected position.
E : her E makes her attack faster and critically strike second hit from the activation.
R: Her ultimate will trigger all 4 passive spots on your, if she manages to strike all 4 She will heal herself and her allies arround the target in addition of the damage she deals by striking all 4 passive targets. If you don't want to risk it and have a way to retreat do so until it wears out. Bramble vest is a must early in this matchup.
Gangplank
You can only win this matchup if your jungler camps your lane, otherwise try to farm safely and look to roam with your ultimate to get your team ahead.
I would recommend The Fleet Footwork build in this matchup.
His passive (15 sec. CD) will burn you with true damage scaling with his bonus AD.
His Q is ranged ability, can critically strike and apply on hit effects but doesn't apply passive, he can also trigger Grasp keystone with his Q.
His W will heal him for a percentage of his missing health and remove any CC's (like your taunt).
E : his E ability can put up to 3 powder kegs wich he can attack to explode, nearby kegs linked to each other will explode in chain reaction, any enemy caught in the explosion will be slowed and the damage ignores 40% of the target's armour. If you manage to destroy the keg before he does it will defuse the explsion and grant gold.
R : His ultimate deals damage over 8 seconds and slows enemies caught in it by 30%, it is also a global ultimate wich means he will make sure to help his teammates even when he cannot follow you up in your ganks.
Garen
Q: He gains movement speed, his next basic attack gets empowered and will silence you. You can counter his Q with your W.
W : Gains a small shield, reduces incoming damage by 30% and gains 60% tenacity.
E: Spin to win, his signature move, try to stay out of it when you can.
R: His R will deal some damage + bonus damage of the enemy target's missing health as true damage, make sure you don't engage while below 50% hp.
The matchup itself isn't hard, just make sure you take short trades to keep it to your advantage with your empowered basics and grasp then get back asap. If he drops below 50% hp, you're healthier than him and his W is on cooldown you can kill him.
Heimerdinger
He will push you constantly wich makes him vulnerable to ganks.
Your W can block his turrets shots.
Try to stay healthy, dodge his skills and farm as much as you can safely, you become more impacful than him later in the game with your ultimate. I would recommend the Fleet Footwork build in this matchup
Illaoi
Try to bait her E, if she misses it you can take short trades. Note that minions can block her E.
I think getting boots on the 1st back against her is a good ideea since beating her requires a lot of dodging and cheesing.
Don't fight in her ult.
Irelia
It is an easy matchup early in the game, you can set her behind by using empowered attacks on her whenever she tries to last hit minions, do not let her stack her passive/farm. It is best if you can freeze at your turret since pushing will make you vulnerable to gank.
Master your wave management / map pressure since she can catch up to you pretty fast later in the game.
Jax
Do not trade from level 1 as will usually be your Q against his E ( wich denies auto attacks and stuns you after a short time ) and passive wich makes him attack faster over time.
Starting from level 2 take short trades, try to bully him when he gets close to farm. There are 2 ways to counter his E. You can stand very close to him when he casts his E and taunt away through him, this way he can't follow up with his Q and will miss his stun, you can also follow that play with q+empowered attack. The other way would be to stay near your blade and press your W just before he stuns you resulting in him getting no value out of his stun. Remember, always try to proc grasp on him and retreat, he wins long trades, specially after level 6.
Kayle
She has no answer to Shen's extended trades till level 6, if you manage to keep her away from farming it will set her behind enough. try to freeze the wave at your tower to stay safe from enemy ganks and have way to chase her when you get a good chance.
The best thing to do is to deny her as much farm as you can since she scales later in the game, depending on how far ahead you can get yourself and your team the matchup is debatable.
Kennen
The Fleet Footwork build helps a lot in this matchup since you don't have the chance to stack grasp anyway, try to stay healthy and last hit minions safely. you cannot kill him in lane phase unless your jungler ganks or you manage to taunt him in your tower.
Malphite
You can block his damage with your passive when he tries to poke you with his Q. You can also block his W with your W denying him a lot of his damage output.
He is really weak in the early game and an easy matchup in the lane phase. You should be aware that he is usefull in team fights even when behind and use your advantage gained in the early game to get your team to scale up.
Maokai
Poke him when he tries to last hit minions.
Notice that his Q can counter your E if timed correctly.
Watchout for ganks since he can pin you down for his jungler.
Nasus
Nasus is very weak early in the game, position your blade aggressively to deny him farm and try to freeze at your tower, if you can get ahead of him and keep denying him farm he cannot recover, if he ends up farming you should watchout for his late game. Your W can block his Q. If he ults try to stay away and waste his cooldown.
