I agree with armour in yellows though. I might try it in reds too when I have a bunch of IP to spare. At the moment I use MPen/Armour/MR per level/Gold.

Wards can kill your enemy, and save you two's lives far more than you'd think.
1. Warding brush on lane. Couldn't see that sneaky Vayne? For just 75 gold, now you can. Therefore possessing the ability to kill.
2. Putting them where junglers gank from. Can give your team the ability to set up a counter gank in time, and the ability to escape if you need it.
3. Warding dragon. If they attempt an early one it can be free kills all around.
4. Teleport. Ward a bush, team mate teleports to it, free kills all around.


Regarding "because it forces your build into something that doesn't enable you to win your lane." -
Faerie Charm gives you mana. Mana gives you abilities. Abilities win lanes.
Faerie Charm builds into Philosopher Stone. Philos win lanes. Especially early ones.
Not being ganked wins lanes. Being ganked loses lanes.
Also, you can auto attack harass with any starting item.


The list goes on.

Only reason I don't like wards is it doesn't directly increase your survivabiltiy or damage.

Sure you get skill useage from the mana but, wards do nothing for your damage. It doesn't mean I don't start with them, but I don't like doing it.

You don't need damage as a support, or you wouldn't be a support.

As Janna, for example, survivability and damage won't increase your shields/tornado CC length/slow percent on W. Same for Soraka, same amount of healing/mana restored/silence/MR shred.

Also, Faerie Charm does indirectly increase survivability. Janna Es, Sona Ws, Soraka Ws, Alistar Es, etc.

If you really insist on starting with Regrowth Pendant and ward, be my guest, since that does increase survivability, but starting without a ward is pants on head ******ed.

I play people like Sona... because I can't play any other support.

I'm not saying it's not optimal, I just don't like doing it due to me playing champs like Maokai and other tanky people who need the sustain from regrowth early.

EDIT: What I meant by "direct survivability" is being able to let someone beat on you for a second or two more. Charm does nothing for that if you're not there to use the heals.

You get this from runes and masteries, and later from items like Aegis and Shurelya's. Add Soul Shroud/Randuins/whatever if the game goes late and you are one tanky support.
