But why is it important to display news articles that are old and no longer useful? I'd even go as far as to say only the most recent news needs to be displayed, maybe even only one or two articles. I just figured you'd want the front page to be as "short" as possible.
As for "unpredictable length" - why not just limit it the way you limit blogs?

Search and new users, primarily. We use the same limit code for blogs and news but images and line breaks make it unpredictable and it looks bad to strip those out.
