You really should not be focusing on getting strong late game characters ... Nasus is weak early game but gradually grows stronger throughout the game. Farming can be boring as ****, and farming with nasus is a pain in the ***. Plus the game can be over by the time you reach 100 minions with nasus (thts how bad his early game is)
I recommend Shaco.. he has a steady early game, weak mid game due to squishiness but quickly catches up to be a beast late game. His dmg will be incredible whilst a tough set of utility tools and survivability (trinity+banshee+guardian).. He is the god of the backdoor. Clone+You= turret is down in seconds... and you can escape with the help of well placed boxes... Shaco however is hard to master.
Master Yi is also another top choice, again huge attack speed and damage that can shred turrets, minions and enemies.
Tyrndamere is also known to be god of late game. Criticals hurt + endless rage. Nuff said.

Late-game characters are essential because if they manage to match your early-game characters and then push the game to late game, all your champions will be useless compared to theirs.

Why shouldn't you focus on getting strong late game characters? A carry is essential for basically every team.
Oh well, I pretty much hate games that drag. I try and finish it quick, hence I usually pick characters like Xin who has an incredible early and mid game performance. Once you get a great start, ward up the map. Farm baron and dragon. Its a win even if they have a strong late game character.
I also like to deny the late game monsters so that their late game, isnt as strong as it is supposed to be
Anivia is not a late game character... her egg becomes useless... and people get some MR.. especially a banshees.
Late game chars.. are usually
Ad auto attackers like people have said...
and mostly tanks...
Tanks like
Morde [He gets pretty op especially if hes fed]
Renekton
Karthus [if hes stacking that AP = 1/3 of everyones health is gone]
[too tired to think]

Nasus is good late game. Not sure if said already though.
Pretty much everyone who snowballs well. Except for Veigar.
He has to snowball well against a mage team to be truly effective.

Morde fed early game is usually gg end game for the other team.
Karthu's Passive also is great end game.

Basically, most AD carries that don't rely on spells become very strong late game. Most characters that rely on spells are stronger early-mid game.
