How to play Xerath?

Hey everyone!

I've started playing but I have no idea how to play him. I've read guides etc. but they seem to be outdated to just plain wrong. This is how I build:

I run 21/9/0 masteries usually and go with and most of my games. doesn't seem to be that good on him.

I run MPen marks, armor/mana reg seals, ap seals, ms/ap/mpen quints.

is one of my best champions and this is what I do:

Masteries: 21/0/9 opting for , and .
Runes: 9x, 9x, 9x, 3x (Run Mres in glyphs against or . I like AP quints better than Mpen due to the increased wave clear early-game and I think it's overkill.

Build path: 2x -> -> -> ->

Exchange Cap with Hourglass when necessary. For example against .

Continue with and . To be completed in whatever order you require. If you have access to every blue then you can probably delay Grail. Finish the build with either Zhonya or Deathcap depending on what you built first.

Mana sustain and damage combined. Chalice delays your damage and isn't necessary early-game and haunting guise doesn't give you enough waveclear for its price.

not questioning the way you play , cuz i haven't ever played with him, but could you explain me what the point of 3x is?

The way I play him, agreed with this.

As of today, I would say you really wanna build the following order:
against AP: doran--Chalice +2nd doran--Unholy Grail--Deathcap--hourglass
taking a hard lead: doran--2nd doran + Morellonomicon ASAP--Deathcap--- ask your support to buy MR aura for you
against ad: doran--seeker--2nd doran+ chalice(maybe hourglass depending on the match-up, like against Zed)--Grail--Deathcap...

Also, healing is very good for Xerath under current patch. I tried ghost but when you get ganked heal saves you much more than ghost. Heal will also help your jungler when he comes to gank/anti-gank

I like getting or at least the chalice super early. allows you to use q a lot which can mean farming if you are zoned away from creeps.

Magic pen is spectacular on since on top of the w you can shred through just about any amount of mr.

his ult cd is actually fairly short and he is super long range with the w, just remember you can't move. follow up the e with either a q or an ult for the stun. the ult can be cast 3 times and in general has some good siege potential.
