Yasuo 50/50 lane. Gangplank has the potential to destroy yasuo early, and vice versa. This matchup totally depends on the players and how they pilot their champions.

Introduction



This guide is more about why i take certain items and spells on gangplank more than it will be teaching people how to play Gangplank. I assume in this guide that you have some sort of prior knowledge on how Gangplank works.

Spells



A large majority of the time you will take Flash and Exhaust.

Flash is taken because its flash.

Exhaust is usually taken as it will help you in lane to be able to beat your opponents earlier than you otherwise could. Exhaust adds immense dueling power against a lot of champions that are currently meta, such as jayce and riven.
It is also good if you are getting tower dived, and can often lead to turning around the outcome into your favor.

The only other viable choice of summoner would be teleport.
Gangplank isn't too good with teleport as it is very hard to use it effectively. Gangplank needs time to set up for a fight. You need barrels down (Before level 13) before a fight starts in order to be useful, otherwise you are just there for auto attacks and a Q every few seconds...

Gangplank can make up for the lack of teleport by influencing fights with his ultimate. It can burst for a surprising amount of damage, as it can proc thunderlords, and being a global ultimate, can be cast from anywhere, to anywhere!

Runes




I've listed the standard runepage used on Gangplank. It is more of an offensive rune page, and is mostly used against Physical champions. The 10% CDR instead of magic resist is because we do not purchase more than 30% CDR in our build.

If you find yourself against an AP champion, Simply use a runepage with MR. and without the CDR and then simply buy CDR boots instead of swiftness. It is essential to get to 45% CDR as soon as possible, as gangplank relies heavily on CDR.

Masteries





There are a few choices that some may not understand here.

The first is why take Bandit on gangplank? Well it is because Gangplank's Q counts as a melee auto attack! You get the full 10 gold from bandit for using your Q from 600 units away!

The second is taking 5 points into Intelligence. Remember where i said "Gangplank relies heavily on CDR"? Well why not get more CDR? Simple if you think of it like that, right?

Thunderlords is also great on gangplank, as it allows your ult to do a lot more damage than most people are expecting. Trading is also good with thunderlords as Passive empowered auto, Q barrel, Passive empowered auto is an insane amount of damage early game if you can pull it off.

Items



Many people will ask me in and out of game "Why do you start with a dorans ring? Gangplank is an AD champion". We start dorans ring on gangplank as it allows for good sustain in lane (Scales with W to make your heals better) and allows us to maintain a decent amount of mana while last hitting with Q. Best choice for lanes where you will have to farm with Q and/or will get poked a lot.

If you are in a lane that you know for certain that you will not back with enough gold for sheen (quinn, rumble), you can buy sapphire crystal and refillable. If i am in the position where i know that i will be facing one of these champions, i may opt to take TP a lot of the time, so that i can recall at 700 gold, purchase sheen, and teleport to lane. This will help you get over the VERY hard stage of the early game vs champions that dominate you in lane.


Trinity force is the best item for gangplank as it give him everything he needs (apart from crit. RIP zeal triforce). But the biggest reason to get Triforce is because of the Spellblade passive. It procs on your Q, which also applies to barrels, allowing for absurd amounts of damage once Trinity is completed.

If you are feeling bold, and its getting to the point where you have a lot of excess gold, you could sell your boots for an essence reaver; But you are trading movement speed for more damage, which is not a bad idea if it is needed (espically since youmuu's proc gives movement speed), but it will make you more vulnerable and may hinder your ability to land barrel combos.
