Hello, my summoner's name is Spacix6 and I'm a gold player since I one tricked Illaoi top in Season 9.
I'm a top lane main and I play the most Illaoi, but I also play Pantheon, Shen, Aatrox, Urgot, Fiora, Nasus, Darius, Mordekaiser or Sett. And I started playing Gwen which I really enjoyed so I'm maining her as well right now, I plan to do a guide on her very soon.

Illaoi spells
Against most matchups you will want to Max E first, you want to Max Q when the matchup can easily dodge your E.
Laning
Laning phase is pretty straight forward, do not take useless trades, even more against losing matchups, farm up and wait until level 6.
Try to use your passive on walls and do a barrier on each side of the lane so you will always have a tentacle ready for battle.
Avoid trading before lvl 6 / harass with your E / basic combo
Don't waste too much mana on the vessel since early levels you will not be able to destroy it.

Post level 6
After you reach your level 6, you can start to be greedy / bait the enemy jungler to your lane as you will most likely win in 2v1 (actually you have more chances to win if you manage to put the whole combo on the enemies, they will not expect the burst). The combo is E on the highest threat or the one you can E, wait for them to get very close to you, E+R+W+Q and then SPAM Q+W.
Post-laning phase
Wait for opportunities to E, don't waste time on killing the vessel if the enemies are running away from you since at some point the ghost will fade away and reduce your targets movement speed, you will then be able to catch up with your target and pull his ghost again.
Bait the most enemies on you that you can, this will allow you to pull off big sustain thanks to your ultimate and Q spell.

Combos
For all the combos, you will need at least one tentacle ready to be able to smash your opponents, all these combos are possible without but you will get less sustain without them.
The basic: E => Q => (spam W) => Q => keep going.
Post 6 if ganked: => E(on the jungler since your laner will most likely have minions hiding him) => W => R => W => Q => W => spam W/Q until everyone's dead, don't hesitate to E someone else when you get the spell back.
Advanced, if you are in a siege situation (defense or attack and you want to pull off a play for your teammates => use your ultimate and while you are in the air flash in the middle of them
So: R => Flash => W => E => spam Q and W
