About Irelia
The Ionians have developed some of the most breathtaking and deadly martial arts on all of Runeterra - just one manifestation of their pursuit of enlightenment. The most remarkable blade style to emerge, however, was the unusual byproduct of foreign intervention. Master Lito was a swordsman whose teachings were sought by ruling classes from nearly every city-state. His art was a highly-guarded secret, but it was said that swords would breathe in his grasp. He withered unexpectedly from a mysterious disease which baffled the brightest of Runeterran physicians. When he died, he left behind Zelos and Irelia, his son and daughter, and a truly unique weapon. Zelos became a sergeant in the Ionian military and left to seek assistance from Demacia immediately prior to Noxus' invasion of Ionia. Irelia, charged with the protection of their home until Zelos returned, was alone when the Noxian forces struck.
The Ionians fought admirably, but soon Ionian blood stained the land beneath the prints of foreign boots. At the Great Stand of the Placidium, Ionians prepared for surrender, but were inspired to maintain their resistance when the young Irelia lifted her father's enormous blade and pledged to hold until her brother returned. In the chaos of the ensuing fight, Irelia was cursed with dark Noxian Necromancy. As her life ebbed, Soraka, the Starchild, made a final attempt to anchor her fading soul. Unwilling to relinquish her home, Irelia rose at the brink of death, and her father's sword lifted in the air alongside her. Irelia rushed back to the fore, unfazed by the blade's sudden animation. The weapon danced around her effortlessly, cutting down Noxians as they gaped in horror. The decimated invaders were forced to retreat from the Placidium. Irelia was appointed Ionia's Captain of the Guard, and when the defense of her homeland moved to the Fields of Justice, so did she.
'The sword flourishes, as though painting with blood.'
- Taken from a Noxian Field Report
Ionian Fervor(Passive)
This is one of the most helpfull passives in team fights. All disables are reduced on Irelia to up to 40% the more enemies are near her (to a maximum of 3 enemies). Cool, ha?
Bladesurge(Q)
With this ability you farm like a *****! Irelia dashes to an enemy minion, monster or Champion, dealing damage. I fshe kills the target with this ability, the cooldown of this ability will refresh and you will get 35 mana back to Irelia. This is a great chasing or knocking down tool. For example: If your lane enemy Champ is weak and you think you can kill him with only 2 abilities but he/she is out of range of your Bladesurge(Q); just use your Q on a low health minioon near the target Champ. Than Irelia will jump to the minion, kill it (get 18-24 gold) and your Q will refresh so you will be able to jump to an enemy again. And ofc kill the enemy.
Hiten Style(W)
Great passive, great active!
PASSIVE: Irelia passively heals herself with every autto attack she makes. Its prety usefull. Like Warwicks passive.
ACTIVE: Irelias attacks deal up to 75 true damage to her target. Coool! A real offtank.
Equilibrium Strike(E)
Irelia pierces her enemy target, deals damage and slows the target. BUT, if the target has a higher health % than Irelia the blow will stun the target for a short period.
Transcendent Blades(R/Ultimate)
Irelia summons 4 spirit blades, which she can fling to the enemies to deal damage and to heal Irelia for 25% of the damage dealt. This is a vey good Ulti, because it can heal you from 10-like 1000 health in a few seconds. But the best thing on the ability is that it has a very low cooldown.

For runes I take "survivor" runes:
Greater Mark of DesolationGreater Mark of Desolation
Ofc, for more armor penetration. To be offtank! Nothin much to talk about this.
Greater Seal of Resilience
The survivor runes! For more sustainability in early game and maybe in mid game.
Greater Glyph of Warding
Same as above -.-
Greater Quintessence of DesolationGreater Quintessence of Desolation
Same as for the Marks.

Well, as you can see I've put only 3 items on my guide, because those other 3 items are all situational.
CORE ITEMS:
All other items are situational.
If the enemy team has a lot of casters or strong APs Than get yourself a Force of Nature or if the enemy team has a lot of damage over time spells, than get yourself a Quicksilver Sash.
If the enemy team has a lot of AD/AS Champs. Get a Thornmailor a Randuin's Omen.
But I really prefer to use the next build:
