Renekton is a massive counter to Riven, to play against this matchup, play passive under tower and farm. Rush 45% CDR (Cooldown Boots, Black Cleaver) Max E against Renekton
Once level 6. Ask for a gank and two man Renekton.
Pantheon
Pantheon is a counter to Riven as he has his shield to block your damage, and out damages your shield with his spears.
To deal with this build more tanky and defensive in armor as it will reduce his damage and allow you to survive laning phase without ganks. Max E against Pantheon
Jax
The only reason Jax would pose a threat is because of his dodge. To avoid losing lane against a Jax as Riven, use or Q and E to get around his dodge and stun, and once that's over all in him as you can win the trade.
Maxing E would be nice against Jax although you don't have to.
Teemo
Teemo is only annoying because of his blind and poison. Starting E helps prevent taking a lot of damage and maxing E would help out too.
Although, once you get level 6 as Riven, you can all in Teemo and win the trade without help from your jungle. Rush hexdrinker against him and you will win lane after 6.
Jayce
Jayce can be a tedious lane matchup for Riven as he outranges you at all times. Using your Q to get close to him is a good idea and using E to prevent taking a lot of damage helps out too. Maxing E would only be used for either soaking up his damage or avoiding his skillshots with it.
Once level 6, you can 1v1 him and win.
Nasus
Nasus is not a threat to Riven in any way. If you take ignite against him, you can all in him at level 1. If you don't kill him by level 1, wait until level 2 and all in him again.
Nasus cannot trade or win against you at level 1 as his Q has not been stacked, and so killing him over and over will prevent him from stacking.
If you fail to get the kill on him, freezing lane near your side of the lane will ensure a easy victory against Nasus.
Garen
Garen and Riven just have a stall lane, as you can't kill him and he can't kill you. Unless one of you makes a mistake. Whoever makes the mistake loses.
However, assuming you go even with Garen, try killing him pre-6 as his ultimate will gurantee him a kill if you go all in at level 6.
Darius
Darius can also be a tedious lane as his passive and ultimate can make your laning phase horrid. Avoid long trades with Darius as he will win all the trades. Keep the trades short and use your E to escape after the trade.
If you see him charging up his Q, Q into him yourself, as it avoids you taking damage from the axe and preventing his healing, this ensures a easier trade and use your E for escaping afterwards.
Buy Black Cleaver against Darius.
Illaoi
Just as most of the threats to Riven, Illaoi can also be a tedious lane because of her constant heals from her tentacles. Although, Illaoi is not a hard lane.
Use your Q and E to avoid being hit by her tentacle and have her heal up from them, rushing black cleaver and using your Q and E to avoid her skillshots will give you a easy victory against Illaoi.
Yasuo
Yasuo is a skill based matchup, as he can use his wind wall to block your second ultimate cast, and you can use your W and Q to go around minions with him.
Before casting your second ultimate, make sure he either already wind walled, or make sure he will be hit by the second cast of the ultimate.
To make the lane slightly easier, start off with cloth armor and rush tiamat, after tiamat, finish cloth armor into Ninja Tabi.
Fiora
Fiora is another skill based matchup for Riven, as she can use her W to avoid your stun or knock up and you can bait out her W using your Q and walking up close to her.
If the Fiora is building tanky and defensive, go for Black Cleaver, otherwise buy tiamat before finishing Black Cleaver.
Try to bait out her W before using your W and third Q.
Gnar
Gnar can be a hard matchup as his Q will slow you and his W can make him win most trades. Using your E will avoid this and making trades with him will usually be more favourable.
Although, try making Gnar use his E defensively as it is a long cooldown, when he gets back to lane, his E should still be on cooldown, meaning he has no form of escape besides flash. From this you can all in him and win.
Optimal build: Black Cleaver, Youmuu's Ghostblade, Boots of Swiftness
Cassiopeia
Cassiopeia is a counter as her W makes you unable to use your Q, E and Flash both aggressively and defensively.
First thing is to max E and rush hexdrinker against Cassiopeia as it will reduce her damage greatly.
Try getting her to use her W, and wait till the duration is over before making trades as it will become significantly easier as you can use your abilities either aggressively or defensively.
Lissandra
Lissandra is almost unkillable in mid game, once she has ultimate and Zhonya's. You will not be able to kill her as she will snare you and trade with you during the snare duration, and if she's about to die, she will ultimate herself and afterwards proceed to use Zhonya's snare you once more and E out.
To avoid this, rush hexdrinker and QSS.
Do not finish your QSS however once having those items, you will be able to kill her.
With this build, starting long sword and Q will now burst down any tank in the top lane. Late game will be a easy one shot on the ADC by doublecasting RQ
Darius
Being more wary of Darius is useful as his passive will still hurt you and kill you before you kill him.
Poppy
Poppy can be a more tedious matchup as her W stops Riven from dashing around with her Q and E. Although with the lethality, after using the W you can kill her.
Nasus
With this build, starting long sword and Q will now burst down any tank in the top lane. Late game will be a easy one shot on the ADC by doublecasting RQ
Nautilus
With this build, starting long sword and Q will now burst down any tank in the top lane. Late game will be a easy one shot on the ADC by doublecasting RQ
Dr. Mundo
With this build, starting long sword and Q will now burst down any tank in the top lane. Late game will be a easy one shot on the ADC by doublecasting RQ
