Shaco was one of the first champions I ever played and I immediately fell in love with him. When I first started to play this champion, I was looking online for guides on how to play him and I finally ended up on MOBAFire.
I have been playing League of Legends for a couple of years and more than half of my games are with Shaco. My goal is to teach you how to play him and eventually get better.
Let's get started!
Pros / Cons
+ High damage
+ Good ganks with Deceive
+ Really slippery, and great escape mechanics
+ Has good CC ( Jack In The Box, Two-Shiv Poison)
+ Can confuse enemies with Hallucinate and Deceive
+ Great counter-jungler
+ Can have blue and red buff on the 3 minute mark
+ Can easily frustrate the enemy team
+ Really fun to play
+ Has some awesome quotes
- Very squishy
- Can be countered by Oracles and Vison wards or by champions like
- Lee Sin's Tempest or Twisted Fate's Destiny
- Needs items in order to be effective
- Early ganks/invades can destroy him
- Might be hard to master
Backstab - This ability cause Shaco's auto attacks to deal 20% extra damage when attacking someone from behind. It can be used to kill creeps faster including jungle creeps like the Ancient Golem with the help of Jack In The Box. Backstab can give you the advantage in a fight or simply while chasing people who are trying to escape by destroying their Health Bar, faster than they expect. When you are jungling, always try to hit the creeps on their back by moving in-between attacks.
Deceive - Shaco becomes invisible for 3.5 seconds and his next basic attack will deal critical damage to him target. Even though the ability says you can only get a crit while invisible, you can actually get the crit after a short time of leaving stealth. This ability is just great. You can use it to gank a lane, escape while in trouble by going through a wall or just by getting away from the enemy or by using it in a fight in order to deal more damage to a target. When you use this ability always try to hit the enemy in the back to benefit from Backstab's extra damage. In teamfights , DO NOT use Deceive to jump in the middle of the fight. It's better to keep it in order to escape or sneak behind the enemy team and kill the carry. While trying to escape from the enemy team remember that this ability can actually get you through thick walls.
Jack In The Box - Shaco places a box on the ground that turns invisible after 2 seconds and it stays for 60 seconds. If and enemy walks near it, it will leave stealth, fear everyone close to it and then start attacking the target that is closer to the box. Jack In The Box has many uses. You can use it when ganking a lane, by placing it behind the enemy. The box will fear him causing him to walk in random directions for a short time, giving you and your teammate some free damage on him. When jungling you can use this box in order to cause the creeps to focus it and kill them without taking any damage PLUS by taking advantage of your Backstab and attacking them while they are focusing the box. If you are trying to escape from a gank or from a bad fight, try going in a bush and place Jack In The Box to slow the enemies down. It's also a great idea to use it in small paths in the jungle which people have to take in order to get to you. They will either have to get feared by the box or go all the way around in order to catch you. When playing Shaco as an AP caster go into a bush and place 3-4 boxes inside of it. Then try to bait people inside the bush and watch them die instantly. Another great use for this ability is using it as a free 60-second ward.If the enemy team has Syndra, she can actually pick up your box, and throw it wherever she wants.
Two-Shiv Poison - When this ability is not on cooldown, it will cause Shaco's basic attacks to slow down enemies. If you attack a minion, it has a chance to miss its attacks while slowed. If you throw it, you apply the debuff on the enemy target but your basic attacks will no longer apply it to other targets until it comes off of cooldown. Even though it doesn't do much damage (unless you are playing as an AP caster) it's a nice ability to slow down running enemies and it also synergizes with Backstab in order to kill them faster. This ability stacks with items like Frozen Mallet, Phage or with the red buff. If you want to use it while attacking a target, it's better if you throw it after a basic attack.
Hallucinate - This ability is what makes Shaco so special in League of Legends. Once you use it you disappear for 1 second and then a copy/clone of you will spawn near you. If the clone dies it will deal magic damage to all nearby enemies. You are able to control the clone by moving the mouse to the desired location and pressing R or by holding down ALT and right clicking. You can use this ability to initiate in a fight. Make sure you use your Deceive BEFORE jumping into a fight and using this ability because the enemy can ping on you before you use Hallucinate and the ping will follow you even if you use it afterwards. It's great for split pushing and escaping as it will confuse the enemies. Just go in a bush and make the clone run in a random direction while you use Deceive to escape. When your team is diving a turret make your clone go first so it will tank the damage of the turret until it dies. In teamfights try to sneak up behind the enemy team and kill the carry, using this ability, as fast as you can. It has a low cooldown so don't be afraid to use it in any fight. The clone benefits from On-Hit effect items like Blade of the Ruined King or The Black Cleaver. As I mentioned earlier Shaco will disappear for a split second when the ability is used. Believe it or not that second can be crucial as it can dodge any ability fired at him at that second. With the right timing you can even dodge Karthus's Requiem.
Attack Damage Jungle Masteries
Standard 21/9 AD masteries along with some armor for taking some damage from the jungle monsters. One of the masteries I really like is Frenzy as it will make you attack faster every time you attack an enemy with Deceive.
Attack Damage Jungle Runes
Greater Mark of Armor Penetration
Greater Seal of Armor
Greater Glyph of Attack Speed
Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power
I grab armor when I jungle in order to be able to be able to take more damage from monsters and some ability power to buff Jack In The Box, Two-Shiv Poison and Hallucinate's damage.
