It has a single purpose and you need to have a strong ping to use it in time. It only lasts for 5 seconds and the entire time you are 1 hit point, meaning even an Annie auto-attack correctly timed will kill you.

I think his ultimate is underpowered, actually. It needs to be remade into something dual-purpose, at least.

As many others have said before, Trynd's ult is far from OP.

The ultimate itself is excellent considering that you can activate it whenever you want to. However, it's the character itself that has some obvious flaws. Like any AD carry, Trynd remains squishy throughout the game since you generally go glass cannon because of the damage mitigation on his ultimate. He has a weak laning phase against most top solo laners now and is zoned hard against an AD+Support bot unless he's cooperating with a very coordinated, very aggressive duo lane and a great jungler.

Even so, he's extremely farm heavy and is shut down hard by CC. Any stun, knockup, etc obviously stops his damage. Silencers are a great counter because they can silence him a few seconds into his ult to stop him from spinning away and healing with his Q. Any soft movement speed CC will let your team kite him while attack speed CC will reduce his damage significantly.

In short he's a melee carry that relies extremely heavily on farm, has a weak laning phase compared to a lot of other top laners, builds glass cannon, and doesn't have anything in his kit that makes him any less vulnerable to CC. Compare him to Irelia, who has an excellent passive and a stun; Lee Sin, who has overall amazing mobility and a much more reliable slow; Nocturne, who has a massive distance closer, a movement speed buff, a fear, and a spell shield; or Jarvan, who has a better slow, massive team buffs, a knockup, and an amazing ultimate.

TL;DR - Tryndamere's ultimate is great, but he has nothing else going for him as a character when compared to the other top melee DPS.

Regarding the Ninja Tabi vs. Merc Treads issue: Merc is preferred against high-CC heavy teams but the combination of Ninja Tabi+Eleisa's Miracle is extremely powerful, especially against high DPS teams as well, or any team with a Vayne. Carries who don't normally buy Philo Stone have a harder time but can opt to get Ninja Tabi early and swap to Merc Treads later, or simply get Ninja Tabi and compensate for their lack of Tenacity with smart play.

Undying Rage isn't overpowered.
It's just counter-intuitive. That is to say, it's NOT obvious what you should do to counter it.

It requires you know about the ability to be able to handle it (or be some twisted genius who instinctively knew the answer)

Tryndamere is designed to be a berserker-style champion who gets stronger with low health.
Without his ultimate, he would die immediately. It can be used during CC because he needs to use it during the moments where he is most likely to be stunned/silenced.

Note that Undying Rage does NOT make him immune to CC. The ability is immune, that's all. So he's still very easy to combat if you have your head on straight.

In addition, it only lasts 5 seconds, so before you start calling OP, try playing him. It is not as easy as it looks.

And even when mastered, Tryndamere isn't considered viable in high-elo gameplay.

I have another thing to say on this, his ult does not automatically activate if he is about to die. That means that you can actually kill him without him popping his ult if you nuke him. Champions like Cho'gath, Vayne, Cait(with crit), GP (again with crit) and Nasus (with a very farmed Q) just to name a few can instantly kill him before he can use it.

This is just exploiting the enemy player's mistake. There's no guarantee that a competent Tryndamere player will ever miss an ult in a game. It sure is possible, but it won't happen very often if the Trynd knows what they're doing. If I saw a Cho'Gath run up to me menacingly, I'd pop my ult before he ults me.

EDIT: You can also use the opposite technique to your advantage. Just like blowing summoner spells, you can sometimes scare Tryndamere players into wasting their ult too early, then just back off and they've lost their advantage. He'll pretty much have to let himself get zoned until his ult comes off cooldown.
Thanks to Jovy for the sig!

It's not just his ult.

It's the fact he can ult, stand there and beat your face in for 3 seconds (which is enough time to kill atleast 1 person) spin away healing himself.

Nerf to 3.75 seconds.

This is why you counter-pick against Tryndamere. Pick someone with some good CC that you can lay on him and he's useless. Soraka is excellent against him because of her pocket silence and her heal which basically screams "anti-AD".
