In all honesty I don't see anything wrong with buying Zhonyas and Thornmail if they have a ton of AD based champions.

And I'm suggesting he replace an item like Spirit Visage with it.
There's literally no reason to get rid of Spirit Visage for Vlad though, even if they don't have a significant amount of magic damage. The heal increase and the CDR are way too important for him.
Nothing else even comes close to what that item does for him.
Actually, Mejai's Soulstealer is currently an item to come back if you are behind, not be ahead and stomp everyone. If you are stomping people, go for the defensive options like Zhonya's Hourglass.
BTW: Isn't the first item on Vlad Will of the Ancients anyway?

Aether Wisp first because the speed that it gives you is perfect against 80% of top laners who need to be in melee range to ruin your day. If you can Transfusion and outrun them when they try to trade, you can repeat ad nauseum and not take damage, or whatever damage you do take is healed up. If I'm not fast enough, Ionian Boots of Lucidity + Enchantment: Alacrity before i finish Luden's Tempest. When i get that Needlessly Large Rod, sometimes it leads to Rabadon's Deathcap, sometimes no. After I have either boots and lood's or boots and raba's I go straight for Spirit Visage because it vastly increases my healing (well you know, core items for Vladimir) then Thornmail because it helps more than you think when you're healing up while adcs and poke champions are suffering tons of their own damage + your damage. Depending on how the game is going, I could go for Abyssal Mask if I'm not heavy enough or i could go for Mejai's Soulstealer -only- if I'm having a really good game (They usually quit when they see me with upwards of 10 stacks). In most cases I'm just heavily situational which is why I haven't ever dipped below silver, though I'm too risky during play to rise to gold.
