Ranked Play

So, before we start i just want to make things clear. I suggest you not to play ranked with this because you are probably gonna get flamed a lot even if you make a small mistake. Always try new things out in normal games.
General tips if you want to play ranked :
  • Don't troll. Trolling is bad for you and your teammates. If they don't let you to play your main role just go what is left. If someone says that they prefer top but he's lastpick, if you are not a top main and only support is open, just go support even if you suck at supporting, because the other guy probably sucks at supporting too, but he might be a good top laner. If they lose the lane you wanted to go...
  • Don't flame. Flameing ain't gonna make anything better, they will play even worse if you tell them that they suck plus they might report you, and you don't want that. If you get flamed don't flame back, just mute them.
  • Don't go on a tilt. If you lose a lot, stop. You don't want to lose more than three games in a row. Go out, do something, play normals. If you go on a tilt it might result that you lose all of your LP and maybe your rank.

Skill Sequence

> > >
Start with Hymn of Valor for the huge lvl one poke, and max it out first, then max out Aria of Perseverance for better heal, and max Song of Celerity last. Put a point on Crescendo every time you can.

Skill Explanation

Power Chord(Passive):
Aura: Sona's basic abilities each generate a unique aura for 3 seconds that empowers her and all allied champions who enter its radius, also incurring a 0.5 seconds period during which she cannot cast her other basic abilities.

Power Chord: After casting 3 basic abilities, Sona's next basic attack deals bonus magic damage, with an additional effect depending on the last basic ability cast.

Hymn of Valor(Q):
Active: Sona sends out two bolts of sound that deal magic damage to the nearest enemies, prioritizing champions.

Aura: Sona and tagged allied champions deal bonus magic damage on their next basic attack within 3 seconds.

Power Chord - Staccato: Power Chord deals 40% bonus damage, dealing bonus magic damage.

You want to use this spell to poke your enemy in lane, since it prioritizes champions. Use this at the fountan at lvl 1 twice, then go out to lane. On lane combo the enemy with AA > Q > AA. This will send out 2 basic attacks, one with your passive and your Q's aura damage, and your Q, and this will also proc Thunderlord's. You want to use this Power Chord almost every time.

Aria of Perseverance(W):
Active: Sona heals herself and the most wounded nearby allied champion.

Aura: Sona and tagged allied champions receive a shield.

Power Chord - Diminuendo: Power Chord reduces its target's damage output for 3 seconds.

Use the spell when you need hp, your allies need hp, you can also use this to stack your passive, but I don't recommend it beacuse this spell has a big mana cost. You'll use it's power chord the least.

Song of Celerity(E):
Active: Sona gains bonus movement speed.

Aura: Tagged allied champions gain bonus movement speed.

Power Chord - Tempo: Power Chord Slow icon slows its target.

Use this for chasing, escaping, engaging, disengaging, etc. When getting ganked, use it's power chord to slow one of your enemies, and try to dodge as many things as you can while your E's movespeed buff is active.

Crescendo(R):
Passive: With each rank, it reduces your basic abilities' cooldown, up to 40%. Multiplies with normal cooldown reduction.

Active: Sona plays an irresistible chord in a line, dealing magic damage to enemy champions and stunning them for 1.5 seconds.

Use this to kill the enemy mid laner, carry the teamfights, carry the game pretty much. Really strong ultimate if used well.

Items

Starting items

Doran's Ring: Basic mid laner start. The bonus hp and the mana regen + getting mana after killing a minion really helps.

Health Potion x2: With the remaining gold you want to pick up two health pots (biscuits) to be able to sustain in lane. When you back and after you bought your items, spend your remaining gold on some pots.

Warding Totem: JUST DO IT!

Early goals VS

Catalyst of Aeons: Pick this up first if you're struggling on lane, or you're just playing passively and you are not getting easy kills. This will give you a nice amount of mana and hp, and passive is great too. You'll get this first almost every time. If you are picking this up, skip Lost Chapter and go straight for the Rod of Ages. Start building Morellonomicon after you finished your Rod of Ages.

Lost Chapter: Get this if you're doing really well on lane. This will give you a better kill potential. If you are picking this up, skip Catalyst of Aeons and go straight for the Morellonomicon. Start building Rod of Ages after you finished your Morellonomicon.

2nd Doran's Ring: If you died early and you have around 500 gold, pick up a second Doran's Ring and some pots, maybe a pink ward too.

Boots of Speed: Pick up boots when you have some gold left over. Upgrade to Sorcerer's Shoes after your first or second core item.

Core items

Rod of Ages: Pick this up first if you started to build Catalyst of Aeons. This will give you lots of hp and mana, but it's better to pick this up sooner than later, because it has to stack up. Get Morellonomicon after this.

Morellonomicon: Pick this up first if you started to build Lost Chapter first. This will give you lots of ap, 20% cdr, which is huge, and mana regen, which pretty nice too. Get Rod of Ages after this.

Lich Bane: Get Sheen first, after you finished Rod of Ages and Morellonomicon. Once you finished your Lich Bane your combos will deal even more damage, and you'll be able to almost 1 shot the enemy mid laner or their adc.

VS & VS

Luden's Echo: Get Luden's Tempest if you are doing well. It gives you lots of ap and a nice movespeed buff too.

Rylai's Crystal Scepter: Pick this up insted of Luden's Tempest if you're not doing so well, or you decided to switch out Rod of Ages with Archangel's Staff. The slow is great and it gives you as much ap as Luden's Tempest does, and it gives you lots of hp.

Rabadon's Deathcap: Get this if the enemy doesn't build magic resist.

Void Staff: Get this if the enemy is building magic resist.

Optional items / Item alternatives

Archangel's Staff: You can replace Rod of Ages with this. Get the Tear of the Goddess early, then build Morellonomicon. Finish Archangel's Staff when you can. Get Rylai's Crystal Scepter to make up the hp lost for not having Rod of Ages.

Zhonya's Hourglass: You can replace Luden's Tempest with this. Only pick this up if you don't have the 10% cdr in your runes.

Abyssal Scepter: You can replace Void Staff with this. I recommend you only picking this up if the enemy mid laner is a LeBlanc or a Syndra, who can blow you up, but you still need the magic pen, because it's passive is pseudo-magic pen.

General Mid Lane Tips & Ability Combos

[Q]: Is it worth to playing Sona mid over anyone else?
[A]: Yes. Sona got buffed recently, so your Q has a ~2.65 second cooldown on level 16 if you have 45% cdr. Her other spells are on extremly low cooldowns too, so you'll not only deal tons of damage, but you'll bring lots of utility too with your constant heals and movespeed buffs.

[Q]: When should I pick her?
[A]: Whenever she's open. There's basicaly nothing that's able to outplay or outdamage you. She's a really safe pick too! Whenever you get ganked just press your E, maybe flash away and you are already under your tower. If they decide to dive you just ult them, and let the tower and your Q finish the work.

[Q]: Why not one item over another?
[A]: If you have any suggestions how the build could be better be sure to let me know, I'm open to new ideas, plus this build is still experimental.

Combos

Level 1 burst combo:

[Q] -> [Q] -> Auto Attack -> [Q] -> Auto Attack

Use your Q twice at the base, then go out to lane. When the enemy mid laner is at sight auto attack him, then Q, then auto attack again. Since your passive resets your auto attack timer, use your Q as soon as your first auto attack goes out, so your next basic attack will be sent out immediately, also procing thunderlord's too.

Poke combo #1:

[Q] -> Auto Attack

Use your Q, then auto attack the enemy. Your Q's aura will make your auto attack stronger.

Poke combo #2:

[W] -> [E] -> Auto Attack -> [Q] -> Auto Attack

Basically the level 1 combo. You want to use your W and E to stack your passive and catch up with the enemy, then auto attack, Q, auto attack to proc your passive and thunderlord's. for tons of damage

Kill combo:

[W] -> [E] -> [Q] -> Auto Attack -> [R] -> [Q]

Almost like the poke combo. Stack passive, speed up, Q, auto attack, ult, proc thunderlord, then spam your Q.

Getting ganked:

[Q] -> [W] -> [E] -> Auto Attack

Stack up your passive to slow the enenmy jungler with your auto attack after you pressed E, then use your ult, Flash, Barrier as needed.
