Introduction - Who am I?

Hello my dear readers! My name is Merlin (Merlijn in Dutch), 19 years old and live in The Netherlands, Europe-West. My summoner name is Pa Mack, currently Gold V (S5) and my favourite roles are ADC (Attack Damage Carry) and support. My favourite ADC is, suprise suprise, Draven!

I started playing League of Legends at the start of Season 4 with friends. In Season 4, I was in the division Silver 1.

In this guide I will describe the role as ADC, Draven and the lane itself. This guide is made for anyone who is interested in picking up the role ADC, for ranked or normal. Without further ado, let's jump straight into the guide/build!

Note: This is my first guide, did I miss something/grammatical errors? Feedback is more than welcome. Do you have questions about my guide, Draven or for me personally, leave them in the comments, or personal msg me. If you give me feedback on anything, and you want feedback as well I would be happy to do so.

Motivation

This chapter is not mandotory to read, it's my personal motivation why I wrote this guide.

I love the role ADC and support because I like to play and make "plays" together with my laner and I like the synergy between champions. I wrote this guide to help people out who want to pick up the role ADC and/or Draven as main.

Personally, I struggled hard with playing Draven early on. He is very fun to play but he is very difficult to master.

I thought that writing a guide was fairly easy to do, it wasn't. Thanks for all the tips and tricks: jhoijhoi's Making a Guide

Introduction - Who is Draven, the Glorious Executioner?

Who is Draven, the Glorious Executioner? Draven is a very strong ADC with an insane damage output. As with every other champion, Draven has one passive, three normal abilities and one ultimate ability. Draven

Damage Output: High, ATTACK DAMAGE
Mobility: Medium-low
Crowd-Control (CC): Low
Gank potential (If the enemy ganks you): Medium-high
Skill-cap: High
Resources: Mana
Overall: High risk -- High reward
Abilities: Max Q by lv. 9 (1 point in your ultimate at lv. 6), Max W by lv. 13 (1 point (2 in total) in your ultimate at lv. 11), and Max E by lv. 18 (with the last point in your ultimate at lv. 16)!

League of Draven: // "Draven gains his fans' Adoration when he catches a spinning axe or kills a minion, monster or tower. Killing an enemey grants Draven bonus gold based on how much Adoration he has." - Champion spotlight.

Basically, when you farm well and catch your axes properly you will receive a lot of "Adoration". For every minion, monster and tower kill you receive one stack and for every time you catch an axe you receive one stack as well. Every stack grants Draven 2 bonus gold and a flat 50 gold bonus when killing a champion. Half of his stacks are lost when Draven dies without killing a champion.

Okay that is a lot of information, little bit confusing? A simple example of his passive.
Draven has 100 stacks and kills a champion. Draven will receive 300 gold for killing the champion and 250 gold from his passive (100x2+50=250) so a total of 550 gold for one kill. This is exactly why Draven is such an insane snowballer. Due to his passive, you need to kill your opponent to be effective. If you farm well and catch every axe you can and kill your opponents a few times, the game is over.

Spinning Axe: // "Draven's next attack will deal an extra 45%/55%/65%/75%/85% of his attack damage as bonus damage. This axe will ricochet off the target high up into the air. If Draven catches it, he automatically readies another Spinning Axe, Draven can have two Spinning Axes at once." - Champion spotlight.

So, a short and general explanation: Draven his next basic attack will deal bonus damage and the axe will ricochet off the target. He can have two axes up at the same time. This ability is what Draven makes Draven. This ability is where all his crazy damage comes from, and this ability is also why his skillcap is so high. When you hit a target, the axe will bounce of it, as mentioned above, and will land in the way you are currently walking/running. Many people think the axes will land anywhere randomly, this is not the case.

If you stand still, the axe will bounce of the target, and land right on top of you or slightly next to you. You really need to practice with this ability and get used to it because it feels really awkward in the beginning. If you hit for example a minion and you walk backwards, the axe will also ricochet off the target and fall behind you (it will bounce back to location you are walking/running to). My advice is: practice this is a game with bots or friends first, to get the feeling how it works. And I almost forgot, where the axe is going to land, a mark will appear on the ground. It is slightly harder to see when it lands in the bush.

Try first to use one axe, try to farm and poke properly. If you think you are skilled enough with one, try two axes. The hard part is not poking/farming/attacking but to catch your axes (or your damage will be reduced dramatically), while kiting and avoiding damage. This is why it is so important to practice this ability first.

One last note: your enemies can also see where your axes are going to land. Don't get tricked by this. It is very likely that the support/adc will try to poke you if you are trying to catch it. If you for example notice that the enemy Nami throws an Aqua Prison on top of the mark, just let it be. It is not worth to catch it and take all the damage. This is also the case in teamfights, as all your damage comes from your Q but it is very likely that they will kill you if you catch an axe which is in a bad spot.

Tips and Tricks
  • // Farming at early levels is easy thanks to it's high damage.
  • // Catching an axe will reset your W, great for chasing/kiting.
  • // You could W for the AS and MS and surpise poke them to avoid counterplay.

Blood Rush: // "Draven gains 40%/45%/50%/55%/60% increased Movement Speed (MS) for 1.5 seconds and 20%/25%/30%/35%/40% Attack Speed (AS) for 3 seconds. The movement speed bonus decreases rapidly over its duration. Catching a Spinning Axe will refresh the cooldown of Blood Rush" - Champion spotlight.

This is Draven his steriod ability. He gains Movement Speed and Attack speed. This ability is useful for pushing lanes, kiting, chasing and escaping or dodging abilities. It is very important to use this skill wisely, as Draven has no ability to reposition himself, like Ezreal who has his Arcane Shift to escape or reposition.

Note that the movement speed decreases really fast so it is essential to keep catching axes to extend your kiting/chasing potential. Pay attention how much you use this in lane, this ability is great for poking and escaping but you will run out of mana very quickly if you use it too often. You can also use this ability to catch a Spinning Axe, thanks to the movement speed bonus.

Tips and Tricks
  • // Useful for pushing, but watch your mana!
  • // Very effective for kiting, chasing and trading!
  • // By catching Spinning Axes, you can spam this ability because the CD is refreshed!
  • // Gives you a massive Attack Speed steriod!

Stand Aside: // "Draven throws his axes and deals 70 / 105 / 140 / 175 / 210 (+.5 per bonus attack damage) physical damage by throwing his axes. Enemies hit are knocked aside and slowed by 20% / 25% / 30% / 35% / 40% for two seconds" - Champion spotlight.

This is a nice ability who will help you trade/escape/kite/farm and so on. The reason why I like to max it last is because the damage is not that great and the slow is not amazing. You will lose a lot of utility if you max W last. The good thing about this ability is for example that is interupts channeled abilities such as Miss Fortune her ultimate. This ability is also useful when trading, as the enemy can't attack you back if they are knocked aside.

Tips and Tricks
  • // Use this ability to interupt abilities such as Miss Fortune her ultimate!
  • // This ability can help you escape, as the enemies will be knocked aside and slowed!
  • // This ability can help you trade, as enemies cannot attack back when you hit it!

Whriling Death: // " Draven hurls two massive axes dealing 175 / 275 / 375 (+1.1 per bonus attack damage) physical damage to each unit struck. Deals 8% less damage per unit hit, down to a minimum of 40%. This resets when Whirling Death changes direction. Whirling Death slowly reverses direction and returns to Draven after striking an enemy champion, or upon reactivation, or upon reaching the boundaries of the map." - Champion spotlight

Draven his ultimate ability, amazing ability. This ability is really hard to use at first, as the damage is reduced by each unit it hits and it changes direction when it hits an enemy, which could be the wrong target for example. You can use his ultimate for sniping off low enemies on the map or as an execution on the enemy ADC. Yes, the range is global but will reset if you the boundaries of the map, as mentioned above. You can also secure Dragen or Baron Nashor with this ability, the ability grants vision as well.

Why is it difficult to use?
This ability is not like Jinx her ultimate, which is a true execution. Jinx will shoot the rocket and it will hit or miss, and deals damage based on how low the target is and the flat damage obviously. But Draven his ultimate, Whirling Death, deals damage as it travels, and as it resets. But when it resets, it drifts to the direction Draven is currently walking, it will return to him. I think you now see the point, as it resets, the damage will reset but also the direction. If you recently moved or the target has moved/flashed away you are likely to miss it. Sniping with this ultimate can be quite hard and needs some practice but it is not the hardest ability to learn. This ability is great in teamfights as it deals great AOE damage and it is your only heavy damage AOE spell.

Tips and Tricks
  • // Use it as an execution!
  • // You can secure objectives like Baron or Dragon with it, with proper timing!
  • // Move the same way like your target to ensure that the reset will hit the target.

Pro's / Con's

Pro's

+ High snowballing potential
+ Great damage output
+ Great at all stages of the game
+ Great in poking
Why Draven is so awesome!

Con's

- Very high skill-cap
- Catching Axes could result in death
- Generally focussed early due to his snowball potential
- Hard to master
All champions, how awesome they might be, have cons.

Runes

Runes

Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage
Greater Mark of Attack Damage
Greater Seal of Armor
Greater Glyph of Magic Resistance

  • Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage: Grants you flat attack damage which will increase the amount of damage you will deal. Other options are: 1 Quint of Attack Damage and 2 Quints of Attack Speed or: 1 Quint of Attack Damage and 2 Quints of Life Steal. Personally, I think that you don't need the attack speed as your W grants you bonus attack speed.
  • Greater Mark of Attack Damage: Increases your Attack Damage. You could add/remove some for Armor Penetration marks.
  • Greater Glyph of Magic Resist: Grants you increased Magic Resistance as you are very squishy. These Glyphs are very useful for example if you are against Annie, support. You can also use some Cooldown Reduction to decrease the cooldowns on your abilities.
  • Greater Seal of Armor: Grants you armor to reduce the amount of damage you take from the enemy ADC.

Masteries

The masteries are shown in the beginning of the guide. Taking all the points in offense for AS, AD and the 9 points in defense to survive the lane by increasing the maximum health. The masteries are very similar for other ADC's.

Items

Item Sequence

Guardian Angel 3200
Phantom Dancer 2800
Last Whisper 1450
Infinity Edge 3300
Bloodthirster 3400
Berserker's Greaves - Furor 1550

Guardian Angel
This item gives you 50 Armor and 50 Magic Resistance, the little tankyness you need in the late-game. The passive of this item is very good, it lets you revive with 30% of your maximum Mana and Health. If you were killed in a team fight or during a siege, you still have a chance to survive/kill. The downside of this item is that the cooldown on the passive effect is 5 minutes. Also when you get caught somewhere alone, the passive is wasted and useless.
Phantom Dancer
This item grants 50% Attack speed, 35% Critical Strike chance and 5% movement speed. It's unique passive grants you the ability to ignore unit collision. The attack speeed and critical strike chance is great on Draven, as almost all of his damage comes from his Basic Attacks including Crtitical strikes.
Last Whisper
40 flat Attack Damage and the unique passive gives the ability to ignore 35% of the targets armor. This is a great item as it gives Draven the armor penetration he needs. Also for the stats, this item is very cost efficient.
Infinity Edge
This is the Rabadons Deathcap for ADC's. 80 flat Attack Damage and 20% Critical Strike Chance. What is so truely amazing on this item is that critical strikes will do 250% damage instead of 200% thanks due it's unique passive! A must have and therefore we rush it on Draven.
The Bloodthirster
80 flat Attack Damage and 20% Life Steal. Also the unique passive is quite good as it acts as a shield. The downside is that it will fade away over time, if you stop attacking minions, monsters or other champions.
Berserker's Greaves - Furor
Movement speed and Attack Speed, a must have for Draven. Draven will not benefit from other boots than the Berserker's Greaves.

Skilling Order
In the beginning in the guide is also the ability sequence showed but I like to show it once more here. This is the sequence to get the best damage and utility. If you want to max E second it is totally up to your personal preferences. Always put a point in your ultimate ability at level 6, level 11 and level 16.

Conclusion

ADC is a very important role within a team-comp and you as ADC need good positioning and not get caught. You will learn this over time, I started as a horrible ADC. My first main was Jinx, because of her amazing kit and low skill-cap to play her. Botlane is all about syngery between you (the ADC) and the support and obviously the rest of the team.

I hope you learned something (new) after reading my guide! You want to play with me or ask me something in-game? Feel free to add me!
