I think this is more of a skill matchup. Try doge her charm, and if you do post 6, you can try use your ultimate to deal some damage to her. Her passive which heals her, will give her some sustain espically if it's used with her (Q). You shouldn't have a hard time dodging her abilities, just try to dodge her (E) charm at all costs post 6, because she can 100-0 you. Rush abyssal and get negatron cloak first.
Akali
You will win this lane easily if you're a bit more skilled. Similar ability (Q) and both of wont do much to you Pre 6, you both have an ability that gives them a mark. Your (E) isn't very useful against Akali, however use it to position yourself if you see her using her (Q) on you. Rush abyssal and buy negatron cloak because post 6 she can be quite annoying.
Anivia
Not a lot of fun. Strong passive against you and her CC is enough to get you killed. Most Anivia players will push the lane which is good and bad. Good thing is you can farm under your turret which is safe, but the bad thing is Katarina isn't very good for farming under a turret. Play this lane really passive, and buy negatron cloak first. Make sure to use your (E) to dodge her (Q) and pick off minions with your (Q) bouncing blades.
Annie
The thing that makes this fairly diffucult is because she is ranged and her stun just counters you so hard. You should be trying to engage on her as soon as you can jump on her right after she uses her stun, or when she only has 1 or 2 stacks of her passive. You can play this lane fairly passive, but try and go for a kill if you can. Rush abyssal and buy negatron cloak first.
Azir
Fairly difficult. His soldiers are so annoying and he can just poke you hard. The best you can hope for is for him to not freeze lane. Just try to pick off minions with your (Q) bouncing blade and try and save your (E) Shunpo if he places a soldir on or near you, so he cant auto attack you. Rush abyssal and Buy negatron cloak first.
Brand
You can win this lane if you can engage on him at the correct time. Wait for his (Q) to go down and use (E) shunpo to dodge his (W) and (Q). Play fairly passive and Brand is vulnerable to ganks, so maybe ask your jungler for help. Rush abyssal and buy negatron cloak first.
Cassiopeia
Quite hard matchup for you. She will constantly try to harass you, but with your boots and 4 potions, it should be okay. Use (E) Shunpo to escape her poision in any form, because you don't want her spamming her (E) on you which is where most of her damage comes from. Rush Abyssal and buy Negatron cloak first.
Cho'Gath
This favors the enemy a lot. He's got a knock up that he will combo into his (W) which is a very long silence. You need to dodge his (Q) and play this lane quite passively because you don't have much chance of a kill. You can engage on him if he has his (Q) and (W) down. Rush abyssal and buy negatron cloak first. You could start Null-Magic mantle as starting items honestly if you feel confident against him pre-6. You could even buy mercury treads if Cho'Gath is giving you lots of trouble.
Diana
This should favor you actually. You just need to dodge her (Q) using your (E) shunpo. Be careful post 6 though, if you get hit by her (Q) and see her trying to engage, use shunpo to back out. The only time you can really engage on her is when she has her (E) down which is the only form of CC that will stop your ultimate. Must buy abyssal first as Diana will probably buy it too.
Ekko
The reason I put him at level 5 is because it's a skill matchup. He will poke you a lot pre 6. If you see him using his (W), just move back out or/and shunpo out of it. You DO NOT want to get stunned. Trading him should post 6; two things you need to look out for. If his (W) is down and if his (R) is up and he can use it to his advantage. Rush abyssal and you have the option of buying blasting wand if you feel good.
Fizz
Most fizz players I play at gold level or platinum, they usually take flat runes which is something like 25 flat ability power and flat armor and magic resistance, or they take no magic resist which will kind of favor you but his damage will be increased a lot. Just use your (E) to dodge his (E) and you will be fine. It's quite even pre 6 but post 6, you really wont be able to kill him unless you can bait out his (E) and make sure his (R) doesn't kill you. Rush abyssal and get negatron cloak asap.
Galio
Really difficult if you keep getting hit by his abilities and don't have much magic pen. You should be taking scaling hp seals and flat magic resist if you would like to. Don't try to engage on him post 6 please, just don't. However Galio lacks escapes so ask your jungler if he would like to help you.
Heimerdinger
His turrets are annoying and he has enough CC to kill you. You HAVE to rush abyssal scepter in this match-up. This is one of the few match-ups where you can start null-magic mantle so you can buy Negatron cloak as early as possible. If you're trying to go for a kill, make sure his (E) is down cause he will just destroy you post-6. I have won lanes against heimerdinger; it is possible, you just have to be really smart. Ask jungler for help and maybe you could get a kill.
Karthus
Easiest lane ever. Stay with your minions so he doesn't deal double damage if he hits his (Q) on you. I don't mean just stand on your minions so you can get hit by his (Q) -_-. I mean try dodge his (Q) but stay near your minions so you don't take double damage in case you get hit. He has no CC to stop your ult and lacks escapes. Just poke him down and engage on him when you think you can kill him. Remember that your (E) will reduce damage any incoming damage for 1.5 seconds, so you your (E) shunpo if he is using his (R) ultimate on you. Not really a game changer but worth mentioning; who knows, it could save your life.
Kassadin
It is possible to kill him lane if you play this correctly. You both have a (Q) which is ranged, however this favors Kassadin because it gives him a shield. (Q) him after his shield is down. Knowing Kassadin's cooldowns are really important in this matchup. The only time you can engage on him is when he has his (Q) down and his (R) ult down. You definitely need a negatron cloak really early. I recommend playing passive and just roaming. Pay close attention if Kassadin is MIA (which then he will go botlane mostly.) Make sure to follow him and go bot lane as soon as you notice he is gone from mid, because you EXCEL at skirmishes post 6 to around mid game.
Katarina
All comes down to skill honestly. Start boots and health potions for that early sustain. You can take flat magic resist seals which would benefit you heaps. Try and proc thunderlords quite early and I would recommend taking your (W) sinister steel at level 2 so you can do so. Keep throwing your (Q) and try proc thunderlords every time you see it's not on cool down. Post 6, engage on her if she has her (E) shunpo down or/and she's low on health.
Kayle
Rarley seen anymore and in this meta, but thanks to the new guinsoo's, I think this is worth mentioning. This lane is super hard. She can just heal, poke you down with ease and post 6, you can't do anything. You just have to pick off minions with your (Q) and play this lane quite passively. She is kind of hybrid so this isn't fun. I definitely recommend roaming cause there's not much you can do. Your (E) shunpo doesn't even help you that much honestly. So just roam and you have the option of buying blasting wand first if you're post 6.
Kennen
Not played mid much anymore but worth mentioning it if you ever go up against Kennen. It's just hit stun really that bothers you. You should be dodging his (Q) most of the time, and if you have 2 stacks of mark of storm, I recommend just backing out a bit and waiting for them to diminish. Shouldn't be too hard and I haven't played much against Kennen. Rush abyssal and get negatron cloak first. Just be careful post 6, I doubt you will be able to kill him without help from your jungler.
LeBlanc
Some leblanc players are very good, others aren't so good. It is quite an even matchup. Try position yourself so she doesn't use her basic (Q) & (W) combo which will hurt you a lot. Try stand with the minions so she has to use her (W) to land her chain. You can kill her if you engage at the right moment, because your ult will be hitting her even with her passive (your ult can hit invisible units.) Start boots and 4 pots for the early sustain. Buy negatron cloak first and rush abyssal.
Lissandra
You should be playing this lane quite passive. Start with boots and pots because you really need that early sustain. Try not to stay with your minions because her (Q) will deal splash damage if it hits an enemy. You should hope she will push the lane, and if she does, try and freeze if the wave is close enough to the turret (not being damaged by the turret.) Post 6 you should be roaming and playing really passive. Rush abyssal and get negatron cloak first and ask jungler to help you if you would like.
Malzahar
This lane is super hard. You have to play this lane super passive as well. His range doesn't help you at all, and he will just use his (E) on you constantly. Use your (E) to dodge his (Q). Start boots and pots and try to harass him every time you can. Post 6 you really can't do anything. He will use his (R) ultimate in one of two situations: If you engage on him and you use your ultimate or if he can finish you off and kill you. Must buy abyssal and rush negatron cloak. Roam hard if you would like to and follow him whenever he goes MIA which will generaly be bot.
Morgana
Fairly easy if you just do the correct thing every time. Use your (E) shunpo to dodge her (Q) or you can stay with your minions so you wont get hit by her (Q). Just be careful if you're doing that, you don't want to take damage from her (W). Post 6 you should engage on her when she has her (Q) down or/and if you can kill her before her ult will stun you. Rush abyssal and buy blasting wand first if you feel comfortable.
Orianna
She has a shield (E), an annoying slow on her (W) and her (Q) is quite good damage. You should be starting boots and pots or if you can start null-magic mantle and know you wont die, I recommend doing that. You will need to rush abyssal really quickly, so if you start boots and pots, don't worry too much about taking SOME damage just to get cs. You wont be able to do that if you get null-magic mantle, but it means abyssal will be cheaper so you can get it early. Just hope she pushes and try farm under turret well (farming under a turret is Katarina's weakness but you can practice it.) Post 6, you can ult her only if her ball is in an extremely bad position and she doesn't have her (Q) or (E) so her ultimate wont stop your ult. Ask jungler for help if they have good gap closer.
Swain
Swain is somewhat annoying. It is hard to farm against him, and his early damage against you is pretty good. You have to be using your (E) shunpo to dodge his (W) and back out immediately if he uses his (Q) on you, becuase the slow from that will help him land his (Q). Two things to note in this matchup: Your ultimate will reduce healing effects from his ultimate and he has no CC that will stop your ult. Rush abyssal, play this lane quite passively and buy negatron cloak first, and you should be okay. Ask your jungler for a gank because he lacks some escapes.
Syndra
Syndra has lots of damage, good CC to kill you and she has good range against you. Pre 6, you need to farm and recall as soon as you can buy negatron cloak. Just use your (E) to dodge her three basic abilites (Q) (W) (E). Use your (Q) bouncing blade to pick off minions when you can. Syndra is great at pushing waves early on in the game, so try get a good freeze if you can. She cant run out of mana is Syndra is a bit reckless and spams her abilities. Post 6, Syndra could easily 100-0 you depending on what runes she takes and what she buys. You should being taking flat MR and scaling health for this matchup. If syndra has her (E) down, you can go for an engage but be careful, she will be landing her skillshots and could kill you easily.
Talon
You might be surprised that talon is up here, but any decent talon player will just destroy you in lane. He has a good poke ability (W), really good damage as well and can proc thunderlords with his (E) and his other abilities. Most Talon players will buy hexdrinker first against you so thats just bad for you. Pick off minions when you can; take flat armor seals as well. Start cloth and you HAVE to rush zhonyas.
Teemo
The only thing about Teemo that counters you is his range but even then, it's nothing really. Throw your (Q) at him on the first bounce if you can for more damage. Try not to get in melee distance of him pre-6 because when you walk away from him, he will kite you (assuming that you have used (E) shunpo on him.) Post 6 is super easy. He has no CC to stop your ultimate and he is really squishy. You should still be buying negatron cloak just because he can be a pain with his range but other than that, super easy. Rush abyssal.
Twisted Fate
This is a skilled match-up. Use your (E) to dodge his (Q). If you see him start to use his (W), just fall back so you don't get stunned if he chooses the gold card. His (E) will have to be used on a minion so that shouldn't worry you too much. Engage on him post 6 when he picks a blue or red card or, if he uses his gold card. He will be roaming bot lane a lot when he hits 6, so make sure to ward the singular bush in the river at drag (preferably a pink.) Rush abyssal and you will be fine. If he goes botlane and you are unaware that he has, either push mid or try and go botlane as well.
Veigar
This favors you. His (Q) is a skill-shot now, and you can shunpo out of his (E). If you get stunned, he'll likely land all of his abilities which can hurt but it won't do that much. Post 6 you should be somewhat careful. Save your (E) just so you can escape his (E) and engage on him when he uses it (Your (E) has a lower cooldown than his (E), so you can escape his (E) then use your (E) on him post 6 so you won't get stunned.) Rush abyssal and I would probably buy a negatron cloak first.
Vel'Koz
Rarley played mid anymore, but worth mentioning. Quite easy to dodge his abilities and it is hard for him to land his knockup on you pre and post 6. Just use your (E) to dodge his (E) which is the knockup. He is super vulnerable to ganks so ask your jungler for help. Just dont stand with your minions, because that favors his abilities. Rush abyssal and you should probably but negatron cloak first.
Viktor
The thing that makes this lane difficult is his (Q). You can't trade with him very well because his (Q) gives him a shield. It's probably better not to stay with your minions; if you do that make sure to ward the bush you're closer to. Use your (E) to escape his (W) and you shouldn't really be getting hit by his (E). Rush abyssal in this lane and buy negatron cloak first.
Xerath
This guys poke is pretty good. He has some good wave clear and great AoE. I think it is best to stay with your minions just so you dont get hit by his abilities in hope of him using it on minions to help him farm. Make sure to dodge his (E) and use (E) shunpo if you have to. Be quite careful if you have your (E) shunpo down; this will make his other skill shots easier to land. He probably wont run out of mana thanks to his passive and what he buys first. Rush abyssal and get negatron cloak first.
Yasuo
Pretty easy lane. This is one of the few match-ups you would max (W), because you are both melee and his wind wall will most likely block your (Q). The only thing is if he start using his (E) on a minion, he will probably try to attack you and he can stay quite attached to you. If you see him in your minions or you see him (E) on your minions, just fall back a little so he doesn't hurt you. You should have no problem dodging his (Q) when it's a knock-up. Just fall back a little bit if you see it and you can engage after he uses it post 6. Start cloth and potions and rush zhonyas.
Zed
This guy's damage out-scales you by heaps. You both are melee, but I think you should max (Q) in this match-up. The reason is because he can position himself so well, and he can deal quite a lot of damage to you. Probably best to stay with your minions as he can out trade you. If you want to trade with him, wait until one of your minions are low so he can AA it and during that time he is AA, try and proc a thunderlord's. After he uses his (W) shadow, he will be fairly vulnerable to ganks. When he uses your (R) ultimate on you, (E) shunpo after he has landed on you, not during, because even if you take him to your turret, he will still likely kill you as he can just (R) ult back. Post 6 is dangerous and you need zhonyas ASAP. Start cloth and pots.
Ziggs
This match-up should favor you, but any great Ziggs player will know what to do. All you really need to do is to not stay with your minions, just dodge his (Q) and use shunpo to do so or/and use it on him. His (W) will be used as a disengage tool and his (E) as a CC move. Post 6 should be easy after his (W) is down and ziggs will run out of mana quite quickly; then you can engage on him. Rush abyssal, probably should take negatron cloak first.
Zyra
Not play mid anymore, but more as a support. If you she uses her (W), just step on them so they can't turn to plants ONLY IF you know you she won't (Q) them while you're near it. You can dodge her (E) easily and her plants wont do too much to you if you stay away from them. Post 6 she has the chance to kill you if you play it badly. Just engage on her after she uses her (E) or (Q) because, that's when most of the damage is gone from her. You will kill her before her (R) ult's CC will stop you. After a kill, shunpo out so you don't get hit by her passive. Rush abyssal and get a blasting wand first if you feel okay.
Lux
All her abilities are skill shots and the only one that really hurts you is her (Q), but if you stay with your minions, there is not a chance she will land it on you because it can only hit 2 enemies. She can land her (E) but just dodge it with your (E). She has a fairly decent shield that will shield her twice (upon cast and on the way back), so be careful if you're diving her. Some Lux players will even take barrier, so be careful when going for a kill. Lux has no CC to stop your ultimate so that's good. She is vulnerable to ganks as well. Rush abyssal and buy blasting wand first if you feel okay.
Hey everyone! I'm sh00zyz, a platnium mid laner on the Oceanic servers. I've been playing Katarina for a very long time. I've mained her ever since her rework came out which was back in 2012! So I have tons of experience with her. With the amount of time I've been playing her, I've learned a lot so I would like to tell you guys how I play Katarina! I hope you guys enjoy and learn a lot!
Katarina is quite a unique champion because of her play style. Getting an early lead on Katarina can allow her to easily snowball which will also help her excel in team-fights. Thanks to Shunpo, she can be a tricky champion to gank. Katarina is a quite simple champion to play after you've had a few games with her. Playing a lot of games with Katarina really helps to know how much damage you can do. KatarinaCAN last long in team-fights if you play her correctly and you will generally win a team-fight after you assassinate your target thanks to the help of your Passive. Katarina can deal heaps of damage, especially in the mid game where not many people have strong tank items that will reduce your damage input by that much and to top it off, she uses NO mana.
Cons
+No form of ANY crowd control
+Team reliant
+Bad laning phase/Many counters
+Hard to master
+Vulnerable to crowd control
+Can be useless in fights
+May fall off late game
Katarina can also be a very risky pick (espically in ranked; she will likely be counter-picked.) She has no form of ANY crowd control, so that makes her very team reliant. Katarina also has quite a poor laning phase, thus giving her many counters (notice the amount of difficult champions she has.) She can also be very hard to master, in terms of timing and knowing when to go in (especially if they have a lot of crowd control) because, the thing that makes her useless is if you jump in, cast your ult for less then a second, and die. You will unlikely get any resets to Shunpo out probably resulting in death and a loss of the team-fight. If the game extends into the late game, Katarina could be quite useless, especially if they have tanky and hard Crowd Control champions such as Alistar or Blitzcrank.
Masteries

Mastery explanations
Here I have my basic mastery set-up on Katarina. Feel free to change a few points where you like here and there. This set-up is quite good; most Katarina players should set-up a page like this.
CUNNING
We'll start with the cunning page first since it has 18 points in it.
Wanderer is a great starting mastery as it gives +3% movement speed out of combat which is great for roaming as it suits her play-style as an Assassin. The other option you could take is Savagery which I wouldn't recommend as Katarina has only one single target spell and you don't really need that bonus 5 damage to minions unless you are really bad at last hitting.
I take
Secret Stash because I feel like the other options don't benefit Katarina that much. Katarina doesn't really need buffs and even though the mastery is called
Assassin , Katarina isn't a type of champion that can kill people by herself. She is team reliant as I stated in Cons.
Merciless is a pretty good mastery on Katarina. Dealing increased damage to champions who are fairly low on health definitely helps her. Don't take the other option; no explanation needed.
Take
Dangerous Game because the other one is useless on Katarina and, this will probably save your life in a lot of situations.
Precision is probably the better option. Having magic penetration on Katarina is always quite good and this mastery also scales.
Intelligence Gives you 5% CDR and increases your CDR cap. You don't need CDR because of the resets and the cap is useless because you don't build any CDR.
Thunderlord's Decree is a must take mastery in this meta. It's super strong and gives you really good damage in lane. The only other keystone you can take is
Deathfire Touch but I highly recommended not doing this as it doesn't provide that much usefulness compared to
Deathfire Touch .
FEROCITY
Sorcery is pretty good on Katarina. There is no use in taking
Fury as it provides Katarina no benefit. Sorcery increases ability damage by %2 so that's a neat thing to have.
You have an option here between
Double Edged Sword and Feast. I think
Double Edged Sword is a bit more beneficial for Katarina because having more damage is obviously better and since you're melee, you deal an additional %3 damage and only take %1.5 increased damage while range is additional %2 for both dealing and taking.
You can take
Vampirism here, but I think
Natural Talent is a bit better since Death Lotus has a massive AP ratio and even scales off AD. The life steal in
Vampirism is quite little and you have life steal on it as well which you don't need.
Take
Bounty Hunter , you don't have much option because you don't have any CC, so I wouldn't recommend it even if your team had CC.
Bounty Hunter is quite neat; %1 increased damage for each unique champion kill and that works well with Katarina.
Flash is a must take spell on Katarina. Even though you have your shunpo, there is no other summoner spell that really satisfies it and Flash is also a great engage tool to.
Ignite is really good on Katarina. It gives you lots of kill potential and will help you get those resets in fights.
Teleport is the only other option you have instead of taking ignite. It gives you good map presence and helps you in fights quite a lot. In a sense, this could be dealing more 'damage' than ignite because you can show up to a team fight if you're not there. But that's very situational and I always take ignite on Katarina.
Champion Abilities
Champion Abilities
Champion Abilities
Voracity (Passive)
This is definitely one of the best passives in the game. If someone dies within 3 seconds of you damaging them, all of your abilities are reduced by 15 seconds (all of your basic abilities are instantly refreshed.)
This ability is what makes Katarina and this allows you to dive so easily and generally when you get one reset in a team fight, you've pretty much won the team fight because you can just clean up everyone else!
