I personally play Ryze like this. When entering a fight, I begin with my R and then use my W to freeze my target in place. You can then hit them with either your Q or your E, although I don't use my E first because if they manage to start running away, it's really helpful to bounce it off of minions or enemy players so that it can chase after your target. A thing you've got to look out for is if the enemy runs away, Ryze has horrible speed. If this a problem for you, replace barrier with ghost so you can chase down enemies(I personally go with this). Throughout my playing with Ryze, I've noticed that in fights with you and one or more allies, he tends to become a support champion. Also, if you can, go pick up blue and/or red buff because those two become a major game changer and with Ryze's abilities, you can deal a lot of damage to a foe in a short amount of time.
