Hey guys I'm gangplank main, I'm a high elo gangplank one trick who has been playing the same champion for about 3 years and I have over 2.5 million mastery points. The point of this guide is to teach you how to play every toplane match up. What we will be discussing will be stuff like what items to buy, power spikes, what champions you beat and what champions beat you, what to do in bad match ups and much more.
Make sure to follow me on my socials

Runes

As for runes you’ll be running grasp into every matchup, conqueror has gotten so many nerfs that the rune isn’t worth it anymore.

Resolve Tree

Grasp
Great for Gangplank since it enhances his early game aggression by giving him more damage on Parrrley and increasing his base stats everytime he does. What makes this rune really work for Gangplank is that everytime he proc’s Grasp it is considered melee damage. So you’ll get the full affect.

Demolish
Shield Bash and Font of Life is just horrible for Gangplank. So this’ll be the rune, it does help with split pushing and getting early turret plating gold.

Second Wind
Amazing rune for Gangplank since it helps with early sustain. You would use this rune when going against champions with spammable abilities, auto a lot, or have Damage over Time abilities. Like Teemo, Cassiopeia, or Ryze.

Bone Plating
Another great rune for Gangplank to help prevent all in champions. This rune is best fit against Irelia, Jax, Renekton.

Conditioning
Horrible rune and probably the worst. You don’t build any extra armor or magic resist to help improve this rune or need the extra 10 base stats it gives. But mostly this rune is poor for Gangplank since you don’t have a rune until 10 minutes.

Overgrowth
So basically every rune in this tree is just horrible, but overgrowth is alright since it increases your health pool by like 100-200 every game.

Inspiration Tree

Magical Footwear
I would use this rune when going against matchups you can easily scale. Matchups like Maokai, Poppy, Or Shen. When running this rune you must always go Biscuit Delivery to help with mana sustain.

Biscuit Delivery
Must have rune for Gangplank to help with his early game mana issues. Whenever you rune inspiration you must take this rune.

Time Warp Tonic
Fantastic rune to help with early game sustain and pressure. The sudden burst of health it can provide can help with baiting the enemy or surviving from a Damage over Time affect.

ABILTIIES

Gangplank’s passive is Trial By Fire
Does 55-225 True damage ( based on level ) ( +100% AD Ratio ) over 2.5 seconds.

It’s a 15 second cooldown and what it does is every time your sword is on fire your next auto does True damage over time and gives you a sudden burst of movement speed for two seconds. This passive resets every time you break a barrel You would use this to get your grasp proc, to close gaps, to escape, or mobility

Gangplank’s q is Parrrley
Gangplank shoots his gun dealing physical damage. It applies on hit and on attack effects. If you were to last hit a minion you get extra gold and silver serpents to upgrade your ultimate. You can also generate extra gold and silver serpents if you last hit multiple minions when you q your barrel. Some of you might wonder what are silver serpents, we’ll discuss this later in the vid.

Gangplank’s w is Remove Scurvy
Gangplank consumes oranges to cleanse himself from all crowd control and heals himself. The healing is increased depending how much missing health you have. This ability is great to help sustain you through the laning phase or bait your enemies into killing you.

Gangplank’s e is Powder Keg
Gangplank can hold up to 3 barrels, they last for 25 seconds and when you detonate it on a champion it deals physical damage and ignores 40% of each enemy's armor as well as slowing them for two seconds. The barrel damage does not stack in a chain.

Gangplank’s r is Cannon Barrage
This is a global aoe magic damage ultimate that slows the enemies that are in the circle. Now for every 500 silver serpents you can choose one of these three upgrades.

Fire At Will
Fire at Will
Over the duration of the ult you can do an additional of 6 waves.
You Would buy this upgrade if your team has good lockdown for you to get those additional waves in, or against champions that are immobile.

Raise Morale
Increases the movement speed of your allies by 30% for 2 seconds.
Would recommend going this upgrade first if your team needs the movement speed due to lack of their mobility, or helping them increase their gap closers.
Champions like master yi, reksai, hecarim and much more.

Death's Daughter
A small circle in the center of your ultimate that does true damage and slows the enemy for 60%
One of the worst upgrades to go on gangplank. The upgrade hasn’t been the same since season 7 with Thunderlord's Decree . With the removal of that mastery on season 8 the ultimate is sub par.

Items

Corrupting Potion
Best starting item for Gangplank, helps with early game sustain, gives Grasp ticks, and a magic DoT.

Doran’s Blade
Good item to get if your back is around 475-600 gold. Will only go this item when going against aggressive laners or in matchups you need to be aggressive in. Examples will be like Jax, Irelia, and Fiora.

Cull
Great scaling item for matchups that just lets you free farm and you don’t have to worry about the laning phase.

Executioner’s
Going this item sucks for Gangplank since it delays your Trinity Force or your 50% crit build by 800 gold, but it’s a must have in the current meta since a lot of champions have sustain especially when going Blade of the Ruined King.

Ninja Tabi
Tabis into bruisers, heavy ad, or a lot of auto attackers on enemy team

Mercury Treads
Mercury treads into heavy ap.

Trinity Force
The item for Gangplank, what you should rush 100% and nothing else. It enhances your Parrrley and Powder Keg by so much and gives you the best base stats that you could ask for. When building this item you would generally rush Sheen first then Phage into Stinger. But sometimes you would build Phage instead of sheen into matchups that are super oppressive like Jayce, Irelia, Camille. Sometimes it’s good to go Phage instead of sheen if your back is 750 gold and you buy Ruby Crystal and Longsword for an efficient buy.

Essence Reaver
Great second item for Gangplank, it’s a great stat stick and basically solves all of his problems.

Infinity Edge
Second or third item for Gangplank. Third if you go Essence Reaver and second if you’re planning on building Phantom Dancer third to get a faster 50% power spike in games that you think you won’t have enough time to scale. The reason you build this third instead of Essence Reaver is because you can really use crits that often at 25% ( your barrels have a ¼ chance of crtting).

Phantom Dancer
You would only build this item as a 3rd or 4th. Very cheap item and you only need it for the crit and shield. Once you get this item you’re able to duel so many people.

Sterak’s Gage
Good second item if you’re going against a lot of assassins or bruisers.

Lord Dominik’s Regards
Build this item 4th or 5th when going against team comps that are building a lot of armor.

Mortal Reminder
This item is great when going against heavy sustain team comps. Just like Lord Dominik’s Regards you would build this 4th or 5th item.

Statik Shiv
Alright item to build after infinity edge and phantom dancer if you need more crit in a super fast paced game. I don’t build this often but it’s for those niche situations.

Barrel Combos

When playing Gangplank one thing you need to know is his combos and when to use them.

One Part ( Phantom Barrel )
https://i.gyazo.com/a1e0fe6323ee3b86ce63b05de792cdca.mp4
Known to be Gangplank’s hardest combo, but by far the best. What makes one partting very difficult is being consistent. You would use this to surprise your enemies, poke, and siege.

You can also use this combo like this.
https://i.gyazo.com/82b2138f50b4a6259c46b71aafca25ac.mp4
You would use this combo to help you disengage or let's say you’re fighting someone and they’re on top of you. You can quickly one part into you, landing your barrels and quickly getting a double passive auto proc onto them.

Another combo you can do with one parting is the flash one part.
https://i.gyazo.com/b3f71665e348284064133b94cd8ab2a0.mp4
Haven’t done this combo that much but this can be used to close the distance onto your enemy to follow up with your barrel or flashing away to avoid abilities.

Three Part
https://i.gyazo.com/6ab15e866e755d0a94eafb9bc8548f5d.mp4
Bread and butter combo on Gangplank, you would use this to close a large distance between you and the enemy.

https://i.gyazo.com/a9cb0d9a1ae1861bf7cb57abd6706262.mp4
This is the flash three part and you would use this combo when chasing the enemy and you need to use your flash for a successful three part.

https://i.gyazo.com/ed3d979d6cf51ded9510dbd40ddeefb0.mp4
Melee three part is when you do a three part without using q, to do this you need to be in front of your initial barrel and your third barrel needs to be placed diagonally. I normally use this when my q is on cooldown or in very low levels.

There are other Gangplank combos but you won’t use them as often as these.

Tips

Tip #1 When eating biscuits it’s best to consume them when you have low health and mana since they regenerate 10% missing health and mana. Though the moment you consume a biscuit you instantly get 50 mana,

Tip #2 Use biscuits to bait your enemies. Let's say you don’t have any mana to cast w and you’re near death. You can bait your opponent to jump onto you to give them that false hope of a free kill. You quickly pop ur biscuit for that free 50 mana then consume your orange. This can be helpful to bait a jungle gank or summoner spells.

Tip #3 Junglers. When going against your laner you also need to understand their jungler. You need to keep a habit of enemy junglers pathing. Rek’sai is more likely to 3 camp gank top or some other lane. Jarvan IV is more likely to take a camp and look to gank a lane. These are examples but this should get you to start thinking how you want the lane to be played.

Tip #4 When using barrels to poke your laner, make sure it doesn’t hit the wave or else the wave will slow push into their tower and depending on the matchup this can be pretty bad since they can develop a freeze and zone you of xp and gold.

Tip #5 All lifeline items don't stack with each other. Phantom Dancer, Sterak’s Gage, and Maw of Malmortius don’t work with each other. You have to build only one.

Tip #6 If your first back is 900 gold it’s not bad to go double dorans blade. This is only good for aggressive matchups. You get a decent amount of early game stats that can assist you in the laning phase.

Tip #7 Let's say you’re behind as Gangplank and you need to come back from being behind. Always look for waves to catch, and always try to do raptors/krugs and last hit them with q barrel for max gold. This will give you xp for 13 and more gold for your power spikes.
