Introduction







In this guide I will show you my way how I play Master Yi when he is traveling in the jungle.
Master Yi's potential in the jungle and while ganking is very high.
Although Master Yi is really squishy he can deal tons of damage and still survive the teamfights. Master Yi is because of his abilities the perfect champion to eliminate important opponents.

A Few Things About Master Yi

Keeper of the ancient art of Wuju, Master Yi is a mystical warrior from the isle of Ionia. He descended from one of the few tribes dedicated to the preservation of Wuju, a martial art founded with the principles of absolute spiritual awareness of one's self and one's enemy. When the armies of Noxus invaded Ionia, Master Yi joined in the Ionian defense to fight the craven enemy, bringing his village honor through his unparalleled mastery of the blade. The ensuing battles ravaged the land, but no conflict inflicted as much horror as the day the armies of Noxus closed in on Yi's village. Left undefended, the village became the unfortunate test subject of the latest invention by an up-and-coming chemist, now known as Singed. The remains of the village that Master Yi returned to were so horrific that it remains a festering scar on Ionian history. To this day, no Ionian will ever publicly speak of what occurred.

After the Noxian invasion was contained, Master Yi fell into a deep isolation. For years, he trained morning to night, speaking to no one and refusing offers of consolation by fellow Ionians. The only thing stopping him from madly charging into Noxus battle lines headfirst was his pledge to keep the Wuju style alive. Even though he seethed with impatience, his rage became a tool for sharpening his practice of Wuju, developing stronger and deadlier skills for his eventual vengeance. The only thing that roused him was news of the League's formation, and Noxus's subsequent enrollment in the League. Master Yi now brings his mastery of the blade to the League of Legends with unflinching purpose: to avenge his kinfolk and end the predations of the Noxus once and for all.

  • if the skills are used wisely he is hardly dependent on mana
  • CD resets/halves when you get a kill/assist(if Highlander active at that moment)
  • Pretty easy to learn overall
  • Great pusher/tower/farmer destroyer
  • Great escape/chase mechanism
  • He is the master of Wuju

  • Not so great in team fights, if you focus the wrong targets

Which Masteries for the Master?

  • Summoner's Wrath for the improved Exhaust.

  • Brute Force for extra AD. Put only one point into it, because you'll get some AD through Wuju style. This point is just to get the necessary four points.

  • Butcher ensures for more damage to monsters

  • Alacrity gives you more attackspeed. And with more attack speed you can quickly clean the camps.

  • Deadliness also grants you more attack damage.
    _____
  • Weapon Expertise . More armor penetration = more damage.

  • Havoc increases your total damage.

  • Lethality increases your critical strike damage which strengthened the passive of Infinity edge.

  • Vampirism increases your chances in the jungle.

  • Executioner increases the damage to to enemies below 40% health. As Master Yi you primarily kill squishy opponents.

Runes



Main rune set

Greater Mark of Desolation Greater Mark of Desolation
In my opinion, these are the best runes because armor penetration in late game brings more than Attack Damage or Attack Speed. And in the jungle, it has no disadvantages too.

Greater Seal of Resilience
Armor is a must have if you jungle because you take less damage and so you can stay longer in the jungle.

Greater Glyph of Shielding
I am using MR-per-lvl-runes because you don't need that much magic resistance in early game. And MR-per-lvl-runes give you in the late game more magic resistance than flat MR runes.

Greater Quintessence of Desolation Greater Quintessence of Desolation
I'm using armor penetration runes here for the same reason why I use it in the Marks

Other runes worth considering


Greater Mark of Strength
You can use them instead of Greater Mark of Desolation but I don't like them because as I said the armor penetration brings you more in the lategame.

Greater Mark of Alacrity
You may use them but your attackspeed is high enough and you don't really need them in the jungle. But if yu think that they are of great benefit for you, then use them. But they are not my first choice.

Greater Quintessence of Strength
Are also in quintessence only a second choice. And for the same reason why they are not first choice in the Mark.

Greater Quintessence of Fortitude
It's also a nice choice. With more health you can stay in the jungle longer and it grants you some survivability. But because they have no effect on your damage and because you can clear the jungle easily without this extra HP, I do not use them.

I think that there is no second choice for the seals and the glyphs. Both builds use the same runes.

Summoner Spells




Exhaust
Awesome spell. Use them to slow a fleeing enemy or to reduce the damage of an opponent drastically. In combination with your ultimate skill ( Highlander


Smite
You're a jungler and you'll need it to kill the buffs faster and to save the dragon or nashor.

Flash
Replace it for Exhaust if you think that you need another escape skill. But I think that Highlander is enough as escape skill.


Ignite
Replace it for Exhaust. This skill is nice to get that extra dmage which is missing to get the kill. Or to counter champions like Vladimir or Dr. Mundo. But use this skill only if nobody else in your team picked this skill.

Start with your E-skill because the extra AD better fits to the lifesteal of Vampiric Scepter. Skill alternately "e" and "q" and in lvl 6, 11 and 16 you lvl up your Highlander. I skill Meditate only from lvl 13 because I think that this skill is not that useful for "jungle Yi". But if you disagree you can maximise this skill earlier.

How to use the Wuju Style correctly (Skill explanation)

Double Strike

Double Strike is a passive ability that empowers every 7th autoattack to strike twice.

Tips and tricks:
  • While jungling try to activate Wuju Style in front of the seventh attack. Thus this attack will deal more damage.

  • If your Double Strike is available and the monster you are attacking is nearly dead then change your target and do this strike to a monster with more HP.

  • Double Strike's counter increases while attacking turrets and other structures.

  • Double Strike's second hit cannot crit, but it can proc on-hit effects.

  • Master Yi's Double Strike is similar to Caitlyn's Headshot. It is very useful when farming minions. Gathering stacks on it by attacking minions, then attacking the enemy on the seventh strike is an effective harrassment method.

Alpha Strike

Alpha Strike is a targeted ability that strikes up to 4 enemy units, dealing magic damage. Master Yi is untargetable for the duration, and appears at the initial target's location when the spell ends.

Tips and tricks:
  • Alpha Strike's multiple-target component has a deceptively long range. You can target minions near an enemy champion to harass them.
  • If Master Yi's target dies before the animation finishes he will be placed back where he originally cast the spell after the animation finishes and no damage will be dealt (as its damage is dealt once the animation finishes)

  • Because at the end of the spell you're at the point where your first target is you can also use it to chase an opponent.

  • Master Yi can be hit with spells that were already in travel before Alpha Strike is used.

  • Master Yi can jungle with Alpha Strike giving him a chance to hit extra damage to neutral creeps.

  • Alpha Strike can be used to avoid non-targeted abilities (e.g. Karthus's Requiem)

Meditate

Meditate is a channeled ability that restores health each second it's channeled and increases Master Yis magic resistance and armor for the duration.
Tips and tricks:
  • Activate Meditate to get enough armor/magic resistance or/and health to survive abilities like Ace in the Hole by Caitlyn or Requiem by Karthus.

  • When you are being chased, hiding in a brush and channeling Meditate can give you the upper hand against the enemies. However, do not do this if they can still defeat you after the Meditate.

Wuju Style

Wuju Style passively increase Master Yi's attack damage, when activated the damage bonus is doubled. The passive effect is lost while the ability is on cooldown.
Tips and tricks:
  • When Highlander refreshes Wuju Style, its passive attack damage will stack with its active, thus giving 45 / 60 / 75 / 90 / 105 attack damage.
  • Activating Wuju Style a second time, after the cooldown has been refreshed by Highlander, actually results in a decrease in damage, as it eliminates the passive-active stack.

Highlander

Highlander is a self targeted ability that increases Master Yi's movement speed and attack speed and makes him immune to slowing effects for the duration. If he kills a champion while Highlander is in effect, all of Master Yi's cooldowns are refreshed, while assists will reduce the cooldowns by half.

Tips and tricks:
  • Don't use Highlander to more quickly reach a place. This will cost you too much mana and you've wasted your ulti.

This is my normal itembuild. Mercury's Treads and Quicksilver Shash give you enough magic resistance. Moreover, the passive of Quicksilver sash is a must have for Yi. Frozen mallet because Master Yi is very squishy and Wriggle's Lantern gives you enough lifesteal and armor. Infinity edge and Phantom dancer ensure the proper attack speed and enough attack damage. Of course, a large part of the damage comes from the critical hits. In addition, you also get more AD by Wuju Style.

With this items you're going to be more tanky. Wriggle's lantern and Atma's Impaler provide the necessary armor, Mercury's treads and Banshee's veil for the magic resistance. In this build I replace Quicksilver sash by Banshee's Veil because the passive are almost identical. Atma's Impaler provides not only the armor but also the critical hits and the attack damage. The guardian angel at the end makes for a good overall package.

The Lifesteal gives you more staying power in the jungle.


Cloth Armor
If you don't jungle often or you feel not so safe then start with a cloth armor and 5x Health Potions.

Boots of Speed
With some champions you can start with this and 3x Health Potions. But in my eyes Yi is too mushy to begin with this item.


Long sword
Instead of starting with a cloth armor you can start with a long sword and 1x Health Potion. Due to the lack of lifesteal and lower armor you will more often return to your base.

Like I said in the "core build" part, tenacity is a must with this champion because it give you a huge amount of survivability.


Wriggle's Lantern
The Lantern is an awesome overall package and a must for a jungling Master Yi. This package contains everything you need. And the ward saves your buffs or the dragon respectively the baron/nashor.

Frozen Mallet
You might now ask why I prefer this item. I prefer it because it slows the opponent, which makes chasing easier, the extra health also gives you a higher chance to survive in team fights.


Phantom Dancer
I prefer Phantom Dancer and not infinity edge because I am much faster with the extra speed. I also have almost the same damage as with the infinity edge, because I'm attacking faster in the same time. But Infinity edge is still a very important item.

Youmuu's Ghostblade
It's one of Yi's recommended items, so why shouldn't it be good? It is a good item, I use it if I think that I could need some CDR or some armor penetration. The ability of this item fits very well with Yi's ultimate skill.


Last Whisper
Its a nice item if your opponents stack armor. In addition, the critical hit will hurt even more. But use this item only if your opponents stack armor.

Guardian Angel
This item you should you buy if you die quite often. In addition, this item gives you more armor and magic resistance.


Berserker's Greaves
If you believe that you still have to attack faster, then these are just the right shoes. But you will lose a lot of survivability.

Masterful jungle route

Jungle route for the blue side

1. Golems


Skill Wuju Style and if after 1:40 minutes the golems appear then focus the big golem and after your first autoattack activate Wuju Style, use Smite on it when the golem three quarters of its maximum health. After killing the big one slain the smaller golem.

2. Wraiths


Kill the big wraith first if you killed the smaller wraiths you'll become lvl 2. If possible activate Wuju Style to clear the camp faster.

3. Wolves


Just like the golems and ghosts focus the big wolf. Use Alpha Strike to initiate, then activate Wuju Style to kill the rest.

4. Blue buff


Start to fight by using Alpha Strike on the big golem. Activate Wuju Style to kill the golems faster. If the blue buff still has about 500 health use Smite to kill it. Now just kill the small adds.

5. Recall


Teleport back to your base and buy boots od speed and a sight ward if possible.

5. Wraiths


Initiate with alphastrike then kill the big wraith first then kill the smaller wraiths. If possible activate Wuju Style to clear the camp faster.

6. Lizard buff


Start to fight by using Alpha Strike on the big lizard. Activate Wuju Style to kill the lizards faster. If the red buff still has about 600 health use Smite to kill it. Now just kill the small adds.

Ask your allies for a pull. Activate Wuju Style to kill the golems faster. If the blue buff still has about 400 health use Smite to kill it. Now just kill the small adds.

2. Wolves


Focus the big wolf. Use Alpha Strike to initiate, then activate Wuju Style to kill the rest.

3. Wraiths


Initiate with alphastrike then kill the big wraith first then kill the smaller wraiths. If possible activate Wuju Style to clear the camp faster.

Start your fight with alphastrike, focus the big golem then kill the smaller one.

How to use the master in Teamfights

In teamfights I think that Master Yi has the same role as Fiddlesticks. You don't attack from the front, but rather from the side. After your team started to fight you join them and try to kill their AD-Carry ( Caitlyn, Ashe,...). But often you get focussed. In this case you should try to run away. I show below here in which order you should activate Yi's skills:

Last Words

This is my guide for Master Yi. I played him quite often to test some other builds and items. Although Yi is very often underestimated you will notice that this is absolutely no reason. If he's played correctly, he may very well help to victory. So have fun while plying the Bladesman.
