Introduction

Hello, members and guests of MOBAFire! I am drakon136, and this is my miniguide on Olaf, after his rework in patch 3.12. Admittedly, I am not an expert on Olaf, but I know enough about him to write this miniguide about him. blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext Before we go any further, I have a warning for you! As I said before, this is a miniguide. Unlike with a full guide, I will not be going into incredibly detail on absolutely everything! If you don't like that, then please go look at a full-length guide. blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext blacktext

Runes

Quintessences

• Best option for Olaf.
• Strong at all stages of the game.
• Give a lot of movement speed, something Olaf desperately needs.

• Next best option.
• Gives a good bit of lifesteal, which makes for a lot of in-lane sustain with Tough It Out.
• Good if you desperately need the sustain.

Marks

• Recommended option.
• Gives flat AD for easier last-hitting and stronger trades.
• Best early, falls off past mid-game.
• Best if maxing Reckless Swing first.

Greater Mark of Armor Penetration
• Next best option.
• Gives flat armor penetration, giving more damage to champions with auto-attacks and Undertow.
• Strong at all stages of the game.
• Best if maxing Undertow first.

Glyphs

• Two best options.
• The former is best against AD top-laners with little-to-no magic damage, such as Tryndamere.
• The latter is best against AP top-laners or AD top-laners with high magic damage, such as Vladimir or Lee Sin.

Seals

• Absolute best option.
• Very few situations where you shouldn't take these.
• Gives flat armor, meaning less damage from minions, towers, and enemy champions.

Masteries & Summoner Spells

Masteries

OFFENSE

Important Masteries:

Weapon Expertise

DEFENSE

Important Masteries:

Veteran's Scars
Block
Juggernaut
Honor Guard

Summoner Spells

First Slot

• Greatest option for first slot.
• Olaf desperately needs the movespeed, and does not use Flash as well as other champions.
• Improved by Summoner's Wrath .

• Next best option.
• Gives less overall mobility than Ghost in exchange for instant repositioning.
• Not recommended; should only be considered against Jarvan IV.
• Improved by Summoner's Insight .

Second Slot

• Best option for the second slot.
• Applies a debuff to the target champion for several seconds, dealing true damage over time and applying Grievous Wounds to the target.
• Excellent for finishing off opponents in lane, or for countering champions with high in-fight sustain, such as Aatrox or Dr. Mundo.
• Improved by Summoner's Wrath .

• Next best option.
• Allows you to return to lane quickly, defend a tower, teleport to a ward to gank, or even jump into a teamfight you were late for.
• Good if you do not think you will be able to kill your lane opponent early on.
• Improved by Summoner's Insight .

Abilities

:
• Olaf's Q.
• Tosses a skillshot axe at the target location, dealing physical damage and slowing all targets hit for 1-2 seconds, depending on how far you threw it.
• It can be picked up to reduce the cooldown by 4.5 seconds.
• It has a minimum throw distance of 400, unless it would get stuck inside a wall.

:
• Olaf's W.
• On activation, Olaf gains bonus attack speed and lifesteal, as well as bonus to all his self-healing (such as from potions, natural health regen, and its own lifesteal) that increases as your health decreases.
• Has a very low mana cost, allowing you to use it to heal up in lane.

:
• Olaf's E.
• Deals heavy true damage to the target champion, scaling with your total AD.
• The cooldown is reduced by 1 second every autoattack.
• Reckless Swing costs health instead of mana, and the health cost scales with your total AD.

:
• Olaf's R.
• Passively, Olaf gains bonus armor and magic resist.
• When activated, Olaf disables the passive boost until Ragnarok expires. To make up for this, it purges all crowd control, makes Olaf immune to crowd control, and greatly increases his AD.
• Lasts 6 seconds, and can be cast while under the effects of crowd control.
• Also makes you red.

Items

Notice from the Author

As I said previously, I will not be going into much detail in this section. I will only explain the core items to this build, and my three example builds. Don't like it, get out. :p

Starting Items

Sight Ward
• Recommended start.
• Gives a lot of sustain in-lane.
Sight Wards are very important to see ganks coming early on.
Health Potions and Mana Potions should not need explanation.

• Very risky start.
• Starting with a Long Sword gives a huge boost to your early damage, letting you bully the other laner around with Reckless Swing.
• Only recommended against weak melee laners and junglers with weak pre-6 ganks.
• Do not take this on purple side.

Sight Ward
• Safe start.
Cloth Armor is very nice against strong AD laners, such as Riven.
• Costs 5 more gold than you start with, so you will have to wait in base for a few seconds.

First Back

• Try not to recall until you can purchase this.
Bilgewater Cutlass gives AD, lifesteal, and a wonderful slow active, allowing you to possibly kill the enemy laner.
• Builds into Blade of the Ruined King, your first core item.

Core

• Very important items for Olaf as of patch 3.12.
Blade of the Ruined King builds from your earlier Bilgewater Cutlass.
• It gives the same bonuses as the Cutlass, as well as attack speed and an even better active; it deals 15% of their maximum health as physical damage while slowing them, and you gain the movespeed you stole!
Spirit Visage gives health, magic resistance, cooldown reduction (very important for Olaf), and an amazing passive.
• Its passive increases your self-healing by 20%; this stacks with that from Tough It Out.

Example Build: Off-Tank

• Total cost: 15975 gold
• This build gives a surprising amount of damage with Blade of the Ruined King, and a ton of defense with everything else.
Randuin's Omen gives a ton of health and armor, plus a very powerful passive and active.
Sunfire Aegis gives a lot of health and respectable armor, as well as a magic damage aura.
Frozen Heart gives all the mana you will ever need, maximum cooldown reduction (when combined with Spirit Visage), a ****ton of armor, and an amazing attack speed slowing aura.
Ninja Tabi gives flat movement speed, an okay passive, and a good amount of armor.
Enchantment: Distortion reduces the cooldown of Ghost, and Flash / Teleport if you took either of them.

Example Build: Balanced

• Total cost: 16375 gold
• In comparison to the previous build, it gives less defense against physical attacks for a massive bonus to damage and sustain. It's also ever so slightly cheaper.
Ravenous Hydra gives a huge bonus to AD, a good bit of lifesteal, plus an amazing cleave passive and active, both of which you lifesteal from!
Randuin's Omen gives a ton of health and armor, plus a very powerful passive and active.
Sunfire Aegis gives a lot of health and respectable armor, as well as a magic damage aura.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity gives flat movement speed and a lot of cooldown reduction, but not quite enough to hit the cap. The difference is almost unnoticeable, however.
Enchantment: Distortion reduces the cooldown of Ghost, and Flash / Teleport if you took either of them.

Example Build: Beatdown City

• Total cost: 15525 gold
• The cheapest of the three builds, but also the squishiest and has the most damage. Not recommended unless you get very fed.
Ravenous Hydra gives a huge bonus to AD, a good bit of lifesteal, plus an amazing cleave passive and active, both of which you lifesteal from!
Youmuu's Ghostblade gives AD, critical strike chance, a lot of flat armor penetration, and cooldown reduction. It also has a very strong active that gives a massive boost to movement speed and attack speed.
Shurelya's Battlesong gives some health, health+mana regeneration, maximum cooldown reduction (when combined with Spirit Visage and Youmuu's Ghostblade), as well as an amazing active. The active gives you and nearby allies a massive boost to movement speed for two seconds.
Boots of Swiftness gives the most flat movement speed of all boots, and reduces the effectiveness of slows on you by 25%.
Enchantment: Distortion reduces the cooldown of Ghost, and Flash / Teleport if you took either of them.
