Introduction

Volibear is a new but powerful champion. Volibear is one of my personal favorite champions. He can be used very effectively as a helpful AP, a master Jungler, or a Tank to be frightened of. In my opinion, I find him most useful as a fearless Tank that can take down a couple of champions at one time. You will be able to withstand multiple champions with the huge amount of health and be very effective in a group fight as you can pull and weakened champion back into the fight with Rolling Thunder.

Volibear's Story

Though the northern reaches of Freljord are some of the most unforgiving lands in Valoran, the Ursine have survived upon the region's barren, stormy tundra for centuries. As a fierce and respected warrior of the Ursine, Volibear devoted his life to the protection of his people and loyalty to his elder brother, the tribe's chief. When his brother was killed during a hunt on the tundra, the tribe looked to Volibear as his successor. It was an honor and a burden that Volibear had never expected, but he shouldered the charge with pride. However, by Ursine tradition, the tribe could not recognize Volibear as chief until he returned from a journey to the peak of their sacred mountain, a place forever shrouded in a thundering maelstrom. There, Ursine chieftains must speak to the storm itself, gaining clarity and wisdom to empower them as mighty leaders.

Donning the chieftain's traditional armor and enchanted gauntlets, Volibear began the long and perilous climb up the slopes of the mountain. When he reached the peak and gazed into the raging storm above, he saw a horrific vision of a Freljord utterly consumed by war. Amidst the carnage, the Ursine fell dead upon a bloody battlefield. Believing the vision to be an omen of things to come if he did not act against them, Volibear traveled to the capitol of Freljord. The Ursine had not ventured across the southern mountains in centuries and his appearance was met with unease. However, Queen Ashe recognized Volibear as a wise and powerful ally. In what Volibear considered the first step against a war-torn future, they forged an alliance. As part of their agreement, he joined the League of Legends in the name of a unified Freljord, representing the primal might of his nation on the Field of Justice.

Masteries

To make an effective Volibear tank, the masteries must be used to increase offense and mostly defense. With the masteries set to a 9/21/0, Volibear gains much health and resistance to keep him going in battle. He also gains some attack damage to deal some of damage while attacking multiple enemies. We want to utilize Veteran's Scars and Juggernaut to give Volibear some more health to his tankiness.

Runes

This rune gives Volibear the necessary armor to become an impenetrable force that he is. The extra armor gives him a little boost to withstand enemy attacks during battle.





This rune allows Volibear to have the extra health from the beginning. This rune counteracts the con of Volibear's low health towards the beginning of the game.




This rune allows Volibear to regenerate health quickly after or during a harsh battle. I think the runes of Vigor and the runes of Fortitude are completely necessary for Volibear to become a tank to be afraid of.




This rune also allows Volibear to have the extra health from the beginning. This rune counteracts the con of Volibear's low health towards the beginning of the game.

Summoner Spells

Heal: Gives Volibear the extra Health boost needed for battle

Ghost: Allows Volibear to quickly escape battle or catch up to an enemy

Ignite: The last bit of damage needed to finish off an enemy

Abilities

When Volibear's health drops below 30% of his maximum health, he will heal for 30% of his maximum health over the next 6 seconds. This passive effect has a 120 second cooldown.

This passive ability gives Volibear the extra health to keep him alive in battle. The enemy will think that he is winning but all the sudden you are gaining more health than you are losing which will give you the necessary edge to finish your enemies.





For the next 4 seconds, Volibear will gain 15% movement speed. If he is moving towards a nearby visible enemy champion, the movement speed is increased by 45% instead of 15%. Additionally, Volibear's next autoattack during this time will deal 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 bonus physical damage and will fling the target behind him.

This skill increases Volibear's speed allowing him to either escape or chase enemies. It also allows him to throw an enemy back towards allies or turret causing some damage in the progress.





Passive: Volibear temporarily gains 8 / 11 / 14 / 17 / 20 % bonus attack speed after an autoattack. This bonus stacks up to 3 times and lasts for 4 seconds.

Active: While Volibear has 3 stacks of Frenzy, he can activate this ability to bite a target enemy. The stacks won't be consumed. The bite will deal 80 / 125 / 170 / 215 / 260 (+15% of bonus health) physical damage. This damage will in turn be increased by 1% for every 1 % of the target's missing health.

This skill is useful when dealing a huge chunk of damage to an enemy in one hit when active. It also is very useful when fighting a group of minions in that it stacks and gives Volibear bonuses when fighting an enemy or minion.





Volibear lets out a powerful roar that deals 60 / 105 / 150 / 195 / 240 (+60% of ability power) magic damage and slows nearby enemies by 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 % for 3 seconds. Minions, monsters and pets are feared for the duration as well.

This ability is very useful in a large group of enemies or minions. Majestic Roar and Rolling Thunder create a great combo in chasing or killing fleeing enemies. This ability is also great to killing groups of minions as they all scatter in fear and lose a lot of health.





For the next 12 seconds, Volibear's autoattacks will blast his target with lightning that will bounce to up to 3 nearby enemies. Each bolt of lightning will deal 75 / 115 / 155 (+30% of ability power) magic damage and will only hit each target once.

This ultimate is great when facing multiple enemies in a group battle because it gives Volibear extra strength and the lightning chains to multiple enemies allowing you to damage a whole group of champions or minions.




We want to max out Rolling Thunder and Majestic Roar first because it is the perfect combo when facing enemy champions. You want to have one or two points in Frenzy to begin with but it is the last one that should be max. Thunder Claws should be maxed when ever available because it allows Volibear to take on multiple champions.

Items

Mercury's Treads provides the speed and magic resistance. It grants additional health and health regeneration.

Warmog's Armor gives plenty of health and health regeneration

Rylai's Crystal Scepter gives plenty of health and ability power. It also slows enemies with spell damage.

Sunfire Cape provides plenty of health and armor. It deals 35 magic damage per second to enemies.

Force of Nature gives health regeneration, magic resistance and extra movement speed.

Randuin's Omen provides plenty more health, health regeneration, and armor.

Summary

Thank You! This is my first guide so thank you to anyone who uses this and reads it. A tank Volibear with all the health and damage resistance is quite useful in a Classic style of League of Legends game. I do not generally play Dominion, so I do not know if this build will work for that. As he is a tank, I call it Volibeast.
