Rushing Philo early on some champions allows for maximum effectiveness of its passive.
It also allows greater lane staying power, and sustains mana hungry champions who have great early lane dominance.

Orianna is more restricted by mana.
Orianna is also THE best lane champion, if you know how to play her. (If you don't, you'll crash and burn)

So having philo is good for lane sustain, let's you stay and dominate for as long as possible.

Other champions can't dominate a lane quite as well, so philosopher's stone isn't the best choice.

So Philo is being used for lane sustain because Orianna is an excellent laner. I still don't see why you wouldn't just get Catalyst for the sustain and build an extremely fast Rod, skipping Philo altogether. One would think that Catalyst is enough to sustain for about 1500 gold.

Jebus, you will usually get a philo early and catalyst early building into a deathcap. This takes care of her mana problems and lets you rush some AP quickly. The reason why you can afford to leave AP until a teeny bit later and take your shield at level 1 (which you should be doing) is because you can trade very easily with simple autoattacks and your base damage will allow you to trade rather easily.

People are missing the point. I get that Philo gives you lane sustain and mana - so does Catalyst. Are you saying that Orianna doesn't have enough sustain from just a catalyst, but suddenly is okay once she has a philo stone too?

So far Pwnzor's reason is the only good one and even that's a little more dubious since with more early AP, you can trade off and win harass wars.

She doesn't need the harass power so much IMO. She's already fairly good at it.
Philo stone give sustained sustain. Catalyst gives instant, "un-reliable" sustain. Catalyst is better if you're already doing well. Philo makes up for either a bad lane match-up or a bad lane day by giving you the "extra farm" that you're missing out on if zoned out heavily.

Thank you to jhoijhoi for the sig, and all the dividers in the guide.

I'd have to agree with this. Catalyst doesn't really give you guaranteed sustain like Philo does, plus Philo gives you gold over time, which everyone is fond of in the current meta.

Since when does Garen sit in mid-lane? Even during a level 1 fight a shield is more useful.
