I wasn't sure wether to put this here or in theary crafting so I just put it here.

Anyway, I just wanted to share with you the beauty that is top lane Amumu. He's very good against most melee champions and can still be a real nuisance against ranged if he can pull off a good Bandage Toss. He struggles against champions with really high burst but if he gets to late game he can 1v1 literally anyone.
Especially against top lane auto attackers he is really usefull with a Doran's Shield, 1 point in Tantrum, maxed Block and early Ninja Tabi. AAs becomes useless just like that.

My final build is always Sunfire Aegis, Abyssal Mask, Liandry's Torment, Rylai's Crystal Scepter and then a situational item like Frozen Heart, Randuin's Omen or Banshee's Veil. For boots I go either Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads, or even Sorcerer's Shoes if I'm feeling confident. (Not nessecarily in this order)

This build allows me to melt any chosen target in a 1v1 and if I manage to pin down a target with Bandage Toss my crystal scepter allows me to stick to them. I'm also able to split up the enemy team really well since nobody wants to fight on top of a mumu with this build.
The combination of Despair, sunfire, liandry's and aby scepter the amount of magic damage dealt here is nothing else but insane, and against hp tanks it's even better.

I have yet to try this in ranked but I have only had good experience with this so far.

A friend of mine has had decent success with Amumu top, but really only against melee opponents. Ranged opponents give you hell because, as you sort of noted, Bandage Toss is really your only way to do anything to them pre-6. He also changed your build a bit, starting off with a Rod of Ages, but that's probably not ideal given how uncertain the situation is if you're picking Amumu top. Does give you some mana sustain though, which is nice considering that extended trades with Despair will absolutely destroy your pool.

Probably an okay pick if you need a tanky magic damage to make up for an AD-heavy comp or something; Malphite or Maokai are probably safer, if less offensive, picks though.
And when the blood was sprinkled on the ground where nothing could grow, the Children of the Dragon did spring up, the People of the Dragon, armed to dance with death till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit into Sightblinder's eye on the Last Day. And he did call them forth from the wasted lands, and they did shake the world with battle.

this should be in theory crafting

But other then that I remember seeing a lot of stuff about amumu top back in season 2, but it didn't last very long. Only because Amumu has only a few favorable match ups, and any good enemy Jungler will take advantage of amumu's lack of mana and escapes and shut him down pre-6 to get his top snowballing.

Yeah it's a risky pick and with the recent FotM with ranged AP top he gets shat on but against a jax, shyv or mundo he can do really well.

I really don't think people play Shyv or Mundo anymore really. It's mostly either AP champs or ranged in general from what I've seen.
Sig courtesy of GrandmasterD. Go get your own sig from them. :D

Basically how I play LoL

I versed one in ranked as Irelia recently.
I think the main problem is he goes through mana way too fast and when he runs out you can zone him easily.
Also he has no sustain and he takes 3 minutes to kill anyone in a 1v1 so you can probably wi if you play smart as Mundi or Shyvana.

Basically MOBAFire.

if I was ever going to play Amumu top which I have been wanting to do for a while now, I would have no choice but to take TP as a summoner spell.

And depending on the match up I would start with a mana crystal instead of a dorans shield if I'm really confident that I could stay alive and can safe farm for a while, or I would start with a flask, but I never play top lane and I always start Dorans ring middle so I don't even know if a Flask is a good start anymore lol.
I stole this Sig idea from SoapSuds

I went up against a Rengar just now and it was a fairly easy lane, but he wasn't playing too great though. I think that the main advantage you have as Amumu is that the opponant is going to underestimate you and think you deal no damage and go all out.
The main disadavantage is that, as Jimmydogga said, you are easily zoned if you run out of mana. And that happens quite a lot.
