Hi guys, my name is EdisonKhoo and I play League of Legends on SEA(Garena) server. This is my support Syndra guide and I hope you will like it.
Syndra maybe is not the best support but she is viable to play as a support as she has 2 CC moves and due to her Dark Sphere as her main damaging and harassing tool and has a pretty low cooldown, she could be played aggresively in lane to poke the enemies hard, and this is why we choose Syndra as a support. But most of her abilities are skillshots so maybe it will get dodge by the enemies. Her Scatter the Weak is kinda hard to let people know when to follow up. Good Syndra supports are very rare due to this reason, but she is a good champion to play if you know how to use properly.
Even though support Syndra is viable, but she is hard to use/control. If you don't really know how to play her, I don't recommend you to use it in rank matches.
If you kinda disagree of my guide, feel free to leave a comment with better suggestions, I am opening these suggestions and change my guide to include them, you'll get the credit for it too.
If you like my guide, please give me an upvote or/and a +rep, direct me to your own guide so that I can help you and give you as much feedback as I can, I'll appreciate it ^^.
sp | Flash is your escape card, it could help you escape ganks and dangers. The reason it is better than Ghost because Flash could "jump" over the wall and Ghost couldn't. |
sp | You will see most high elo players take this on a support because this spell could make you snowballing the game easier and add kill pressure to the lane. Take Exhaust if your ADC already took this. |
Alternative Choice
sp | This is taken by most supports in lower elo. This is pretty useful against assassins and marksmen like Zed and Vayne. The cons of this spell is that Syndra is often not in range to Exhaust because she does not get close into the enemy like Leona and other supports with gap closers. |
Standard Runes for AP Supports. greater mark of hybrid penetration helps for your AA harass. In the Seals slot, there are no other choices but Greater Seal of Armor, it provides you Armor so it makes you tankier. Greater Glyph of Ability Power and Greater Quintessence of Ability Power provides you extra AP. I don't recommend Greater Quintessence of Gold because due to the new gold income items and the gold income from the masteries is already enough.
Alternative Runes
sp | Alternative Mark for Hybrid pen Marks. If you think you can't harass your enemies with your AA, use this instead. If you want to play really safe and/or facing a long range poking champion like Caitlyn etc. Take Greater Mark of Armor instead to block some damage. | sp |
sp | This is another Glyph you could replace for Greater Glyph of Ability Power, it provides you MR. you could take Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist though but most support these days are APs(especially Annie that deals much damage early game), so if you are not lane against AP supports then you could take Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist. | sp |
sp | Replacement for Greater Quintessence of Ability Power. If you afraid that you will be melt by the enemy, take this instead. Extra health doesn't hurt(This exclude against Vayne.....). Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed is also a good choice if you want those early mobility. It also allows you to move quickly around the map to ward/clear wards. | sp |
Masteries #1
These are the new masteries for range supports in Season 4. The defense tree makes you harder to kill and win trades. The utility tree provides massive gold income, Wanderer gives you much speed to roam and put/clear wards and Meditation gives you mana regen to let you spam your Dark Sphere more often.
Masteries #2
This masteries will give you more damage but you will be squishy a little. Tbh, Syndra with just utility is not that good. So you could use this masteries. Both are viable, try these out and see which one suits you better.(Credits to Maintained)
- There is another set up 21/0/9 just like Mid Lane masteries for Syndra, I don't really like it cause of my own playstyle, use this if your team have really no other champs that deal damages.
Starting Items #1/#2
Item Sequence
|
sp | These are the most common start for support in this new season. If you are playing aggresively take Spellthief's Edge. If not, take Ancient Coin instead, Ancient Coin could also upgrade into talisman of ascension later. Some people prefer Ancient Coinbecause of its passive, it is your choice to choose your gold income item. Buy Stealth Ward at the start for map control. | sp |
|
Starting Items #3
Item Sequence
|
sp | Start with these if you expect to trade a lot in early games or you are up against some champions that has long range like Caitlyn + Annie lane. Doran's Shield could help you block some damage from the enemies AA and its health regeneration is pretty useful. | sp |
|
Early Purchases
Item Sequence
These are the items that you need to buy in Early Games. Sightstone gives you wards to prevent ganks and you wouldn't need to keep buying Stealth Wards. Sell your Stealth Ward and buy Sweeping Lens, since you already have Sightstone, you won't need any extra wards anymore. Frostfang and Nomad's Medallion depends on which gold income item you buy at the start. Boots to boost your speed and Chalice of Harmony could increase your mana regen and could let you spam your abilities more often, it builds into Athene's Unholy Grail later.
Core Items
Item Sequence
talisman of ascension |
sp | Upgrade from your Frostfang. This item gives you more AP and a good active. Some people prefer talisman of ascension on most supports because of its active, it is a great item, it will help you win fights. | sp |
talisman of ascension |
sp | This item is still a core on supports, Syndra is not an exception to this. This will give you extra health and you wont need to keep on buying Stealth Wards. | sp |
sp | This item gives Syndra the CDR she needs. It also provides extra mana regen and some AP. The mana regen and CDR allowing me to attempt to catch enemies out without fear of being Out of Mana in teamfights or tower sieges. The passive kill or assist for mana makes this a pretty useful item. | sp |
sp | This is a very good item on supports with no sustain. This item not only helps to remove CC, it also has a great heal. This item is better than the spell: Heal since it heals more and remove CC too. | sp |
sp | As Syndra has long range abilities, we wouldn't need Abyssal Mask since she wont get near the enemies. Therefore, this is the best item that we could buy, it gives magic pen that counters high magic resist. So I usually buy this in late game(last item). | sp |
Situational Items
Item Sequence
sp | This is a pretty decent item on Syndra, this item could be bought if the enemies are building health or they have many tankers. It synergies very well with Rylai's Crystal Scepter due to Liandry's Torment's passive. | sp |
sp | This item provides magic resist aura and a shield active that can be useful against AoE AP teams. If the enemies have a lot of magic or AoE damage, this could be a good purchase. | sp |
sp | This item is really useful if you needed to run away from fights or chase enemies. It also synergies very well with Liandry's Torment. | sp |
sp | You could buy this item if the enemies have champions with healing ability( Soraka, Sona etc.) and you need a healing reduction item. | sp |
sp | This item is also useful if you needed to run away from or chase enemies. It also as same as Rylai's Crystal Scepter, but this item gives you vision of the enemies, but it only can hit up to 2 people only. | sp |
sp | Abyssal Mask is also another purchasable item if you are running an AP Team Comp. You could also buy this item if the enemy have high mobility AP champs such as LeBlanc, Akali etc. | sp |
- Remember to set your abilities to smartcast, this way your abilities will be easier to hit and makes the opponent less time to react. An example of Dark Sphere + Scatter the Weak combo could quickly do a stun on them if they don't react fast.
- You could max Scatter the Weak first in some situation if you really need to lower the cooldown of Scatter the Weak in early games.
- Another option is max Force of Will after Dark Sphere if in teamfights enemies keep on getting away or your team needs to get away from them.
If you get zoned out very hard, call for your jungler to help gank. Remember to always ready your Dark Sphere to Scatter the Weak the enemies.
In teamfights, you should stay behind and keep poking the enemies with your Dark Sphere. If you want to do multi stun, put 1 or 2 Dark Sphere on the ground and then Unleashed Power 1 enemy, then use Scatter the Weak, most of the enemies should be stun already.
Vs Melee Supports
Difficulty: Easy
Champions: Alistar, Blitzcrank, Leona, Nunu & Willump, Taric
If you lane against these melee supports, you are going to jump for joy cause you could just simply poke them. As for someone like Blitzcrank and Leona, just don't get too near to them and hide behind minions, remember to ward the bush too. if they are going to engage you, just Dark Sphere + Scatter the Weak or just Scatter the Weak to push them back. If you are facing someone like Leona or Alistar tht could engage you, I suggest you to max Scatter the Weak first and rush Athene's Unholy Grail to reduce the cooldown of your Scatter the Weak.
Vs Normal Range Supports
Difficulty: Normal
Champions: Elise, Janna, Kayle, Morgana, Thresh
These match-ups are kinda okay, you outrange all of these champs. Just be careful of Elise's Rappel, Janna's Howling Gale and Thresh's Death Sentence. It is easy to dodge if you just stay behind minions and all of those are skill shots. The problem with Kayle is that her Intervention, try to poke her down before she reach level 6 and don't fight when she Intervention her ADC, wait till its gone. Morgana's Dark Binding is easy to dodge because it moves very slow. And don't forget about her Black Shield that immune to your Scatter the Weak stun. Try to bait it out before engage, try not to stand on her Tormented Shadow, because it really deals a lot of damage.
Vs Long Range Supports
Difficulty: Normal - Hard
Champions: Annie, Fiddlesticks, Karma, Lulu, Lux, Zyra
These champions are like you, AA long range and/or most of the abilities are long range. The most annoying part on Annie is her AA range(625), if you want to trade with her, you better use the Doran's Shield start. The most annoying part on Fiddlesticks is his Reap, he could silence you and make you to unable to use your abilities, he could also poke you with it too. Karma, Lulu and Lux, these 3 abilities have a very long range, but luckily it is also skill shots and harder to lane than yours. If Lux use Lucent Singularity, just move the the left, right or maybe infront, cause she probably will throw it to behind you. Karma is not a very good support now, so you will see her less in games. But if you really go see one, just dodge her Q, it moves slow so if you get hit by it, you deserve that damage. As for Zyra, her Grasping Roots are very slow , you could easily evade, her only poke ability is deadly bloom, but she will run out of mana quickly if she keep on spamming. The most poke you will suffer here are from Annie's AA range, Fiddlesticks's Reap and Lulu's Glitterlance. Play smart and you could win them.
Tips: If you are against Annie, you could use your Force of Will to grab her Summon: Tibbers to prevent it from dealing too much damage.
Champions: Ashe, Jinx, Miss Fortune, Tristana, Varus, Vayne
ADC's with CC's could synergy well with Syndra. Example like Ashe's Enchanted Crystal Arrow. Gap Closer Slow ability, Tristana's Rocket Jump, make sure to protect Tristana as she jumps into the fight. As for Varus and Ashe, you stun the enemies to let them hit their CC abilities more easily. Vayne's Condemn needs to pin an enemy to the wall, make sure you ward the bushes to let her do it easily. The cons on these are that when Syndra uses Dark Sphere + Scatter the Weak combo and the sphere didn't hit the enemy and push them away, your ADC will be hard to follow up with their CC.
