Ok, with the first few levels you will want to try and own the mid, if the enemy mid laner takes over your feeding abilities and also control of the early game becomes contested.. Focus on last hitting, trying to gain as much gold as possible while keeping an aggressive attack up to keep the opposition AP champ from farming or pushing you back to far.

I personally like to W, Q then E quickly against the other champion and then back away, continually doing this will put big dents in their health and make it easier for you to keep last hitting the minions.

Ryze cant take alot of damage so its a god idea to stay away from easily gank-able spots on the map and stick in the middle or to the edge when team fighting so as to deal alot of damage but not be the first target of an enemy team attack.
