Introduction



In this guide I want to show you my way of playing Amumu. In my opinion Amumu is one of the best tanks in the game. He has good disables, with Bandage Toss and Curse of the Sad Mummy, and powerful AoE skills ( Tantrum and Despair ). He can win 1 vs. 1 situations (vs. strong AD champions like Xin Zhao ) and can turn the entire game with well-placed ultimates in teamfights. But he can also clean minion waves very fast with his AoE skills and a Sunfire Cape.

All in all Amumu is an all-rounder who can disable, cleans minion waves, can tank very good and deals still damage.

Mastery Explanation
I play with normal 0/21/9 masteries to get some armor, MR, HP and speed. It´s not much, but better than nothing.


Defense Tree
space
Tier 1 - Max Resistance and Hardiness to get some starting MR and armor. It can save your life in the early game and together with the runes and
Doran's Shield you have a nice amount of MR and armor.

Tier 2 - Durability is a good choice for a tank (Health per level). Take as much life as you can get from the masteries.

Tier 3 - Take Indomitable and Evasion to take less damage and Veteran's Scars to get some early extra HP.

Tier 4 - Initiator is self explaining. Run in the teamfight fast to activate your ulti.

Tier 5 - More damage reduction from Honor Guard is great for you.

Tier 6 - Juggernaut is a really nice mastery and gives you 10% tenacityand increaese your maximum health by 3%. Necessary for a tank.


Utility Tree

Tier 1 - Choose Summoner's Insight for an improved flash, because the cooldown on flash is very long. Take Expanded Mind to get some mana, because you have a very low mana pool.

Tier 2 - Here you max Swiftness to get much faster. It's very good for initiating or running away.

Tier 3 - If you get a Blue Buff and have a point in Runic Affinity you keep the Buff much longer. Try to take up the Blue to spam your skills often.

Summoner Spells


SPA Short range teleport to your mouse cursor.
It's a really good summoner spell for every champion. You can teleport you over the wall to escape or to jump in the teamfight. It can be used offensive and defensive. In my opinion almost a duty pick.
SPA

SPA Slows the enemy movement and attack speed.
This summoner spell is very useful. You can slow the AD carry of the enemy team or somebody who tries to kill you.

Other good choices
SPA Teleport you to an ally minion or turret.
Useful to save turrets. Why not?

SPA Deals true damage over time.
It can used to pick up kill from an running champion or counter high lifesteal. But you have already your Bandage Toss to kill running champions. It´s your decision.

SPA Gives you 27% movement speed for 10 seconds and you ignore collisions.
If you need to run away it can be useful, but I prefer flash.

Ability Explanation





Cursed Touch: Autoattacks reduce the target's magic resistance
This passive is more for the AP Amumu but it isn't bad. It's useful if you are with an AP on lane.




Bandage Toss (Q): Amumu pulls himself to an enemy and stuns the enemy.
One of Amumu's best abilities. Bandage Toss is not easy to hit, because it's a skillshot. It can be used to catch an enemy or to escape with a jump over a wall.

Tips and Tricks




Despair (W): AoE damage to nearby units (every second a percentage of their life).
This is your AoE ability to kill high health champions (like Vladimir or Dr. Mundo). Just activate it and see her life disappear.

Tips and Tricks
  • Don't have this ability permanently active because it's mana intensive.
    Use it only if you fight.
  • Kill champions who try to escape with this ability and Tantrum
  • You can easily do Dragon with Despair, Tantrum and a Sunfire Cape.
  • Activate it if you try to escape.




Tantrum (E): Reduce the damage you take (passive) and deals damage to surrounding units.
This is a really nice ability. You can farm a wave of 20-30 minions in a really short time; because each time Amumu is hit the cooldown is reduced by 0.5 seconds. You can spam it very often because the mana costs are the same on every level.

Tips and Tricks
  • Use it if you are focussed, because of the cooldown reduction.
  • Very nice farming tool for Amumu.
  • Let the minions focus you to use the skill often if you want to push a lane.




Curse of the Sad Mummy (R): Snares surrounding units for 2 seconds and deals damage.
In my opinion is this ultimate one of the best in the whole game. With the 2 seconds snare you can turn the entire game to your favour. 2 seconds where your team can take down the enemy carry and win the teamfight easily. The only disadvantage is that is has a high cooldown. Use this ability only in teamfights and not for single targets.

Tips and Tricks
  • Bring you in the right position for the ultimate with Bandage Toss or Flash.
  • Use it as counter vs. high life steal ( Sion). He can't heal his team and himself if he is snared.
  • Don't waste it vs. single targets.
  • In opposition to Bandage Toss your ultimate doesn't stop channelling abilities.

You put one point in Bandage Toss at level 1 and max it last. One point in Despair at level 2 and one point in Tantrum at level 3 to harass the enemy champions in your lane and get a kill. After that you max Despair first and Tantrum second. Your ultimate at level 6, 11 and 16. A alternative is to max Tantrum before Despair.

Full Build




SPA 25 MR, 35% Tenacity
You will buy these boots almost every game. Together with your masteries you have 45% tenacity. It means all CCs will reduced by 45 % (2 seconds snares will work only 1 second (circa)). Best boots you can buy.

SPA 18 Armor, 270 Health, 24 MR (Aura: Gives nearby allied Champions 12 Armor, 15 MR, 8 Damage)
This item improves all your defensive stats. It's a really nice start item vs. balanced teams. Your teammates get also improved MR, armor and damage. A nice item for a tank.

SPA 50 MR, 375 Health and Mana (Passive: Blocks one negative spell every 45 seconds)
One of the best items vs. AP Champions like LeBlanc. The shield blocks spells and they can't start a combo to kill you fast. Additional it gives you some MR and life to become more tanky.

SPA 45 Armor, 450 Health (Passive: 45 Magic DPS to nearby enemies)
This is your Anti-AD item (like Banshee's Veil vs. AP). The HP and the armor are necessary for a tank and the passive works great with your Despair.

SPA 1270 Health, 40 HP5
With this item you will be almost unkillable, because you get so much HP. Together with your other items you should get 4000 HP. This is an amazing item.

SPA 68 Armor, 38 MR (Passive: Revives your champion with 750 Health and 375 Mana (5 minutes cooldown))
If everyone thinks you are dead, you will be revived. This item is like Zilean's Chronoshift and it gives you some MR and armor too. Nobody can kill you!!!

Alternative Items


SPA 25 Armor (Passive: Reduces the damage taken from non-turret basic attacks by 10%)
This boots are the only alternative to Mercury's Treads. If you play vs. a team with few CCs you can buy these boots. Nice item vs. AD champions.

SPA 100 Armor (Passive: Returns 30% of the damage taken from auto attacks)
If in the enemy team are strong AD champions like Vayne or Master Yi who are feeded buy these item to protect you from their attacks. They will kill themselves and die fast (In my opinion 2000 Gold are too cheap).

SPA 350 Health, 75 Armor, 25 HP5, 5% CDR (Passive: 20% chance to slow the attacker's attack and movement speed by 35%)
Like Thornmail a nice item vs. strong AD champions. Buy that if the enemies have a high attack speed.

SPA 76 MR, 40 HP5, 8% Movement Speed (Passive: Restores 0.35% of your maximum health every second)
This item is a good alternative to Banshee's Veil because it gives you 8% Movement speed and 76 MR. Together with the speed from the Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed, Initiator and Swiftness you are the fastest little mummy in the world.

SPA 99 Armor, 500 Mana (Passive: Reduces the Attack Speed of nearby enemies by 20%)
A really good Anti-AD item, which gives you armor, mana and slows the attack speed of the enemies. Buy these vs. feeded ADs.

SPA 500 Health, 80 AP (Passive: Your spells slow enemies movement speed)
An AP item which works great with Despair. If you think you don't deal enough damage with your spells and you are tanky enough buy Rylai's Crystal Scepter.

Philosopher's Stone SPA 18 HP5, 8 Mana Regeneration per 5 sec (Passive: 5 Gold every 10 sec)
If you have some problems with your mana buy these in the early game. It allows you to spam your skills more often.

Gameplay

Early Game

Amumu can do solo and duo lane but I prefer him at a duo lane. Why? He doesn't need as much farm as an Irelia and has better laning on a duo lane. He does kills easier with a partner like Shaco who can do a maximum of damage in a short time.

Try to last hit the minions which your partner doesn't get. If you need to push a group of minions from your tower just activate Despair and Tantrum. But remember don't do that too often because you need your mana for kills and have a low mana pool.

You start with a Doran's Shield which allows you to stay longer in the lane. Stay in the lane as long as you can and if you reach level 6 you get your ulti. Now you can do easy kills vs. two champions. Do a kill or go back to buy something.

Buy Boots of Speed and if you play on your lane vs. hard ADs buy a Chain Vest, vs. hard APs buy a Negatron Cloak. Buy some wards for Dragon and your bush.




Warding

Try to ward some of these places.

This is where you and your team should Sight Ward.

  • Yellow: Vital to protect the jungler on your team
  • Blue: Prevent ganking on lanes
  • Red: To guard Dragon and Baron
  • Orange: Counter-jungle wards to steal Red/Blue Buff




Mid Game

At this point you should always have your Boots of Speed and a defensive item. If you don't have trouble in your lane try to help other lanes with a gank. But ask every time your lane partner whether you can go for a gank. Try to get an early dragon for a gold advantage.

Now have a look at the map at every time. If some people are missing play defensive and have a look at Dragon/Baron. If your team moves together use your ulti vs. a big group of champions to get some kills. But have a eye on your tower.

Summary

Amumu has an OP ulti with a 2 seconds snare. His skills are not easy to master. You have really great escape mechanism and it's funny to escape with a bandage juke.
