I. Introduction

A
Hello guys!
I am P4ND4W4RR410R - but you can just call me Panda - and i bring you my build and guide to Ashe, the Hottest Chick of Frejlord. Sadly, she is already married with some barbarian king or someone like that, so SORRY GUYS! She is not free, but she would still love if you picked her and played her with this guide! :P

Anyways, i hope you enjoy the guide and learn something from it! Feel free to leave any suggestions, hate or other important stuff you got to tell me in comments or via private message! I'd appreciate that ^^ .

A

A
This down here is a Freljord theme music and it's great! I recommend listening to it while reading my guide ^^ (If you don't see a youtube video, just reload the page - it should apear)

II. The story

A
''One tribe, one people, one Freljord.'' - Ashe

With each arrow she fires from her ancient ice-enchanted bow, Ashe proves she is a master archer. She chooses each target carefully, waits for the right moment, and then strikes with power and precision. It is with this same vision and focus that she pursues her goal of uniting the tribes of the Freljord and forging them into a mighty nation.

As a child, Ashe was always a dreamer. She marveled at the colossal, abandoned fortresses of her ancestors, and spent hours by the fire listening to tales of the Freljord's fabled champions. Most of all she loved the legend of Avarosa, the renowned Queen of the once magnificent and united Freljord. Though her mother chided her foolishness, Ashe swore one day she would join the scattered and warlike tribes of the tundra. She knew in her heart that if her people would stand together once more, they would reach greatness again.

When Ashe was only fifteen, her mother was killed while commanding the tribe on a brash raid. Suddenly thrust into the role of leader, Ashe made the difficult decision to follow her childhood vision instead of seeking the revenge she craved. She spoke passionately against her tribe's demand for retribution, declaring the time had come to put blood feuds aside and broker a lasting peace. Some of her warriors questioned her fitness to rule and soon hatched a treasonous plot to kill the young leader.

The assassins struck while Ashe was on a routine hunt, but their plan was interrupted by the warning cry of a great hawk. Ashe looked back to see her tribesmen approaching with swords drawn. Outnumbered and overwhelmed, Ashe ran for hours. She found herself deep in uncharted territory, her weapon lost in the chase. When she heard another cry from the hawk, Ashe put her faith in the strange creature and followed it to a clearing. There she found the bird perched on a pile of stones - an ancient Freljord burial cairn. With a last glance at her, the hawk screeched and flew away. Approaching the mound, Ashe felt her breath turn to frost and an unnatural cold chill her to the bone. The stone at the top of the cairn was marked with a single rune: Avarosa.

The assassins burst into the clearing. Ashe lifted the runestone from the cairn to defend herself, revealing something hidden underneath: an ornate bow carved from ice. She grasped it, crying out in pain as frost formed on her fingers, and tore the bow from its resting place. Cold flowed from the enchanted weapon into Ashe, awakening a tremendous power that had always lived within her.

Ashe turned to face the assassins. She drew the bow, and by sheer instinct, willed arrows of pure ice to form from the cold, crisp air. With a single frozen volley, she ended the insurrection. Carefully replacing the cairn stone, she gave thanks to Avarosa for her gift, and returned home. Ashe's tribe immediately recognized the legendary weapon in the archer's hand as a blessing from the ancient Freljord queen herself.

With Avarosa's bow and her vision of peaceful unification, Ashe's tribe soon swelled, becoming the largest in the Freljord. Now known as the Avarosan, they stand together with the belief that a united Freljord will once again become a great nation.

III. Pros and Cons

A

+ You get her for only 450 IP, so it's a great starter champ.
+ Very high Crowd Control.
+ Hawkshot allows you to scout bushes. It's passive also gives you extra money per minion hit, wich leads into a decent bunch of gold late game.
+ Pretty decent AA range allows you to poke meele enemies and to peel with your Q.

- Lowest movement speed in game.
- Squishy, as ad carries usually are.
- Pretty bad early game damage.
- No inset/natural escapes, wich really makes us need an escape summoner spell in our repertoir.
- No sustain and kinda small mana pool early (to fulfill your needs anyways).

IV. Mastery trees

A
A

Classic build

In this mastery page, we go for max damage potention and just a little bit of defense. I mean... we got the defense from our support and he doesnt have the damage to kill someone so it is really kinda the best choice :). You can switch the health and armor for some movement speed and/or mana regen in the utility tree if you feel the need.
A

Money maker

A
Since my second one is a Money Maker build, i make sure that we are gonna be actually getting some money. This means that we get 21 points in utility and 9 points in offense. Pickpocket , Wealth and Greed are the masteries, we are going for the most, but Nimble , Vampirism and Runic Affinity work quite well too!
A

V. Rune pages

A
Those are three rune pages that you might use as an Ashe player:

A

In the first one, there is the classic damage rune page, that fits on almost every AD oriented champion. If you got too little rune pages (like the starting 2 or something), you should definitely make this one. It does offer wuite alot of damage and some decent defense (not that the ones before didnt do that to, but they are not as practical as the last one.

A

Second rune page offers high sustain ability and helps you in early trades. Pick this rune page if you are expecting a lot of poke from champions like Ezreal or Corki! You will be easily able to heal the lost hp back up. Again, this rune page synergizes very well with Money Maker build.

A

Last, but not least there is a rune page with Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed, yea, move speed quints. With them, you actually dont really need to buy boots as your starting item, because you will have very good amount of movement speed already (altho, you will still lack the sustain from pots) from your runes and masteries (if you go the Money Maker path). I mean, don't make me wrong, movement speed on Ashe is just godlike ;).

VI. Summoner Spells

A

Best choice

A

Yea, you are saying something like: "Is that guy joking or something? He must be from level 5 if he still uses Ghost!" *stupid laugh*. You'd be suprised, but i am actually level 30 in league and i don't use ghost because i'm backward, but because it's actually pretty darn good spell! It's great for both escaping and catching your opponents.
A
Because of "High risk, high reward" playstyle of most AD carries, you should always have this spell at hand. Flash can be used for escaping bad incoming fights and situations, dodging abilities, disengaging fights and catching your enemies. Without this ability, you are a dead man (if you play adc, wich you do right now).
A
Barrier is an amazing spell for saving your life in bad situations. It has reasonable cooldown and really comes in handy everytime you need it. However, if you got someone like Thresh or Janna as a support, you got quite a big shield already. Forget the last sentence. Barrier is useful everytime. Pick Barrier, safe a life.
A
Cleanse is great summoner spell if the enemy team has a lot of croud control... However, i never got really used to it. I always forget to use it, just like i forget to use activable items :D. If you want to pick it, just pick it. I know it's a great spell and if you are good at using it, you should.
A

Not so hot choices

A
Teleport is a very, fun to play with, summoner spell, if you pick it on Ashe. You can always just hit your enemy with ult and tp to him to finish him. Sounds great yeah? Yes it does, but Ashe's ultimate isn't as easy to hit, so you will usually end up with a wasted Teleport. I think it is a decent spell for very experienced players that want to have some fun, but i wouldn't really recommend it.
A
Ignite, one of the most used summoner spells in game. Meh... It is very good for Ashe's earlygame, because she doesn't have that much damage early and this spell works greatly for securing early kills, BUT it is actually kinda useless lately in game where ashe gains extreme amounts of damage. I think it's better to use some defensive spells, but if you really want it... Meh again.
A
Heal was one of the most used summoner spell for ad carries back in the start of season 2 or even before. If you didn't pick Ignite, you automatically picked Heal. A while after that, people started to use it on supports, so adc can get either Ghost or Ignite. Nowadays, i don't think it's a viable spell for adc anymore.
A

Combinations

A
A
This is the best combination for the least experienced players who just started playing ashe. It is really safe and easy to use. You should use it when you don't feel like going for more agressive spells like Ignite or for the other "more hard to use" defensive summoner's like Cleanse.
A
My most used summoner spell combination when playing Ashe. It gives you a lot of mobility - you can catch up your opponents or easily escape from uneasy situations. I recommend this combination only for players who know when to go in or fall back.
A
Teleport is a great summoner spell to use with your ult Enchanted Crystal Arrow, however, it takes a lot of practice with your ultimate to actually make this combination actually worth. If you hit less then 50% of your ultimates, you shouldn't pick teleport. I recommend it for the experienced players.

VII. Utility Ashe - $Maker

A

Prepare your brains guys! Math incoming!

How much money do i really get?

This is a very important question! So i will start by naming all our bonus gold sources.
From masteries, we got:
  • Greed - Grants an additional 1,5 gold every 10 seconds.
  • Pickpocket - Grants 3 gold each time you hit an enemy champion.
  • Wealth - Increases starting gold by 40.
And then there is:
  • Avarice Blade - Grants an additional 3 gold every 10 seconds and 2 gold for a minion kill.
  • Hawkshot - Grants 1/2/3/4/5 gold everytime you kill an enemy unit or destroy a structure.
And now, i will count down how much gold do we get from all the stuff:
  • 1,5(gold/10)*6(minute)*35(avarage game/minutes)=315
  • 3(gold/hit)*60(amount of hits if really passive)=180
  • No maths here - =40
  • 3(g/10)*6*28(if you bought it 7 minutes in game)=504
  • (3+2)*200(assuming you farmed... ok)=1000

Total count: 2039

Wich means that if you are a player a bit under avarage, playing an average game with an average weather, you will be able to offer one B. F. Sword and couple of other useless stuff!
A

When to pick Utility Ashe?

Pick Ashe if you are against very agressive laners. Movement speed from masteries, runes and boots will help you easily dodge enemy skillshots. If you will be in lane against a poke ad carry like Caitlyn and Corki or if enemy's support is someone like Thresh or Leona with many engages, definetely pick Utility Ashe.

What is all that stuff about movement speed?

Another great part about utility build on Ashe is that you can finally encrease your terrible movement speed, thus getting faster reactions to stuff around and really, really fast map wandering. Here is more math for you (what exactly do you get for your effort). Masteries: Fleet of Foot (1,5% MS), Wanderer (5% MS, out of combat). Runes: Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed (4,5% MS).

1,5 + 5 + 4,5 = 11

325(Ashe's MS)*9,5%(0,095)=35,75

Total Movement speed out of combat: 36
Movement speed from Boots: 25

This means, that if you pick Utility Ashe, you will have even more Movement speed then you would get from start with boots. This bonus also keeps multiplying each time you buy another movement speed item. Wich means that:
A

Total Movement speed at level 1 with boots, out of combat: 389

That's by far better then ANY other champion at level one that gets boots to screw with you.

VIII. Skills and their Sequence

A

Skills

A
A
Frost Shot (Q) - While active, each of Ashe's basic attacks slow her targets. This drains Mana with each attack.
Toggle: Basic attacks slow enemies by 15/20/25/30/35% for 2 seconds.
A
Tips:
  • Since this spell is a togglable ability, and actually uses mana one every basic attack you hit, you shouldn't forget to toggle it on or off! You think i must be joking - everyone knows this - , but many starting Ashe players actually tend to forget they got it active. (Shut up doctor Obvious, we all already heard that from you Zilean times!)
  • If you attack tower with Frost Shot toggeled on, it doesn't use any mana, so feel free to use it at tower, just to look cool!
A
A
A
Volley (W) fires arrows in a cone, dealing 40/50/60/70/80 (+1.0) physical damage. Volley applies Frost Shot's slow effect.
A
Tips:
  • This spell is your kiting spell. You should use it while running or kiting an enemy, because it gives you more damage and another source of your slow.
  • Volley applies the same slow as your Frost Shot and does even more damage than your basic attacks! If you are far away from dying enemy, just use your Volley to lasthit him - you got very good chance to hit the target :)
A
A
A
Hawkshot (E) - Each time Ashe kills a unit, she gains some extra gold. Ashe can activate to send her Hawk Spirit on a scouting mission.
Passive: Gains 1/2/3/4/5 extra gold whenever Ashe kills an enemy.
Active: Reveals terrain as it flies toward target location. Grants vision for 5 seconds.
A
Tips:
  • Hawkshot has a very long cooldown, however it doesn't use any mana. Use this spell only if you think someone is trying to gank you or to see if enemies are doing dragon or baron nashor
  • Hawkshot's passive is one of the main reasons why is Ashe a late game beast. With this spell leveled up, you get passively gold for every minion or monster you hit. If you add an Avarice Blade to it, you get huge amount of gold from killing creeps.
A
A
A
Enchanted Crystal Arrow (R) - Ashe fires a missile of ice in a straight line. If the arrow collides with an enemy Champion, it deals damage and stuns the Champion for up to 3.5 seconds, based on how far the arrow has traveled. In addition, surrounding enemy units take damage and are slowed.
A
Tips:
  • Always tell your teammates that the arrow is coming! If they can't follow up on it, it is kinda waste.
  • This skill is not great just for lasthitting champions. You can use it for initiating fights too. Don't be greedy, securing kills without even helping your team.
A
A
Focus (Passive) - While out of combat, Ashe gains stacks of Focus. When Ashe has 100 stacks, her next attack will critically strike.
A
Tips:
  • Very good passive for early game burst down potencial. If you have someone like Fiddlesticks with his long fear or Blitzcrank / Thresh with their pulls as a support, you can easily get first blood if you manage to build up your stacks and use them on your enemy.
  • Try to use this passive to poke your enemy, but don't risk him doing a crucial damage to your support or yourself. Always poke when your enemy overextends for a creep - he will have to choose between creep and you. They always choose creep.

IX. Itemization

A
We finally got to item section - where the magic begins!
A

Starting items

A
Ashe is kinda slow champion and she has no natural escapes besides her Flash or possibly Ghost, wich means, you really need some movement speed items to be efficicient. Also with boots start, you get 4 other potions to start with. I recommend 3 Health Potions and one Mana Potions if you are going to poke a lot with your W.
A
Doran's Blade is a very good item for early damage, wich is a thing that ashe doesn't really have. It gives you a bit of sustain and some health. However, you are still slow and you got no Health Potion to heal up from. Also, you will have to sell Doran's later in the game, because they don't really build to anything.
A

Early game

A
Ashe has slows and stuff, but still need movement speed to catch up with her opponents - that is why we build boots so soon. People ususally go for Berserker's Greaves for the early attack speed and i am totally ok with that, however there is another choice for ashe. You can buy Boots of Swiftness - no one is gonna be able to escape you with this item.
+ + ( )
A
Those three are the first "non-boot" items, we are going for. We are going to build B. F. Sword into infinity edge, then Zeal into either Statikk Shiv or Phantom Dancer and lastly Vampiric Scepter into BT or BOTRK. Idealy you should get VS first and then B.F., for the sustain in lane, but if you got enough money, go for B.F. straight ahead. Buy Avarice Blade first if you go for the Money Maker build

Midgame and Lategame

A
First big item, we are going to build towards is Infinity Edge. It is not like "i don't really want to build it because the picture doesn't look as fancy as the Bloodthirster's one". Infinity Edge is a must for every ashe player, because ashe is a crit carry, wich means that she doesn't stack up attack damage, but critical chance and damage. You must buy it ASAP.
A
Those are two last crit chance items we are going to build. They give us 75% critical strike chance and a huge boost to our attack damage, attack speed and movement speed. Since we got enough of that, we can now make a use of our Vampiric Scepter and buy as life steal items.
A
A
Life steal is very important if you need to stay alive in teamfights. As a late game carry, you are going to be focused in every stage of the game. All you need to do is to stay behind your team's front line and damage the nearest enemy. However, if an enemy actually somehow gets to you, you got no other chance then to either kite or stay and fight him. BOTRK is great for kiting, BT for staying and fighting. Pick one.
A
Last Whisper is a must for every AD carry that has to face armor heavy tanks. And even if enemy tanks aren't building that much armor, you should pick it, because everytime some of them tries to damage you, you will shred them in peaces. Also it has a bow in the picture, so you should automaticaly buy it as an Ashe.
A
A
So now we got lots of damage and we should build at least one defensive item. Otherwise you would be focused and killed quite a lot. Guardian Angel is a great item if an enemy team has a caster that provides immense burst (like LeBlanc or Zed). Those champions will most likely make all their spells go on cooldown and at worst, pop your GA. Mercurial Scimitar is good if enemies have very good crowd control abilities. Banshee's Veil should be bought against enemies like Leona/ Malphite and their ults or Thresh and Blitzcrank with their CC. Randuin's Omen will help you kite and also give you immense power while dueling another adc. Black Cleaver, especially if you build it with Last Whisper too, will make killing every tank look like a piece of soft strawberry cake.
A

Example builds and their explanations

A

A

A

Old fasion

This build is one the only build you could get on any ad carry back in season 1 and 2, before the new adc items in new season 3. It still provides a lot of pressure and is used by a lot of players in league, because you got all you need in one nicely wrapped package.

A

A

A

A

Crit carry

This is my most often used build on Ashe, because it gives you total of 75% critical strike chance and decent amount of movement speed. However, it's more for experienced players, because this buil doesn't provide you any lifesteal.

A

A

A

A

A

Ruined Queen

Blade of the Ruined King is a hit of season 3. Mildly overpowered item, that makes a kating machine from every ad carry that buys it. However, because of Ashe's decent range, you have to come closer to your to use BOTRK's active, wich isn't really a good thing as adc.

A

A

A

A

Lifesteal carry

Great build for starting Ashe players, because it gives you amazing safety with the huge amount of life steal you get. No champion can face you if you get both Bloodthirsters and max them up!

A

A
A

Enchantments

So as your enchantment or tier 3 boots or however you want to call it, you got two choices. Furor and Homeguard. Since you are ad carry and you are going to use your auto attacks quite a lot, the bonus from Furor is pernament and you got immense movement speed boost. However, if your enemies are pushing to your nexus or at least destroyed your inhibs... or maybe you just need to get to lane quickly, you should buy Homeguard. It's up to you sir.

X. Gameplay tips

A

Since some of you would probably like to knwo how to actually play Ashe, i've got an easy strategy i learned after some time playing her. It's Farm, Poke, Dodge, Teamfight, Take Objectives - shortly FPDTTO. It's short and really easy to remember, so you should always use it in game. (JK btw... I know it's flippin horror to remember, i'm just trolling you a bit. Now that i think of it, it doesn't even make sence.)

A
  • Farm

Farming is very important on every champion and especially on Utility Ashe. You can only proc your Hawkshot's and Avarice Blade's passives by lasthitting, so you have between 4 and 8 more reasons to farm. But! There is always a but (either the one with double T - in game or just but). Now i'm not telling you to not do that, it's just a friendly advice: IF you for some reason get to enemies' inhibitor turret while farming and all enemies just happen to be missing, your allies will probably not be happy after you die in pain with Shut Down gold between Volibear's teeth. Also you probably shouldn't farm when your team is on the other side of a map, obviously teaming up for a fight.
  • Poke

While farming is very important, being sure that your opponent isn't getting any farm what so ever, is a good thing too. If you happen to have the upperhand in lane (either by your opponent not being so good or by having an good support for once), you should try to zone your enemy away from creeps (your support should be able to help you quite lot with that). Attention!: this will only work if you are really ahead, if your opponent has lower range or if he is just not paying attention for a while.
  • Do(d)ge

Since Utility build gives you immense movement speed, you should make a use of it. Movement speed is not only good for kiting, but for dodging enemy skillshots and faster moving around all and all. Most of the time, people just stand there in the middle of a lane, waiting for lasthits and that is WRONG! Always move around between lasthits, so you always have they upper hand over that Blitzcrank in the bush trying to pull you.
  • Teamfighting

There is one very important thing, you have to have in mind when you come to a teamfight. Stay behind. I said that billion times already (*what? no he didn't*), but you have to stay behind and only kill the nearest enemy. Don't go straight through their front line to their adc and say "Hi i came to die!".
  • Taking objectives

First thing before we get into this. Only take objectives when there is NO risk of you dying. That means, you can push a tower or kill dragon only if you have a safe path out or if the enemy is on the other side of map without Teleport. Don't get caught!
Split pushing is very fancy way of securing team's victory and who is better at split pushing then ad carry? The biggest damage source of the whole team? Whilst split pushing with Ashe, never tank the tower for any matter. Always push minions there, because you don't have enough defense to safely arrive home after tanking too many turret shots. Always stay safe.
Last thing. I have to say it, yes. Your team can't win late game teamfights without you, so securing that you will have a safe path back to base while split pushing is a key to victory.

XI. Counters and how to counter

A
Remember, that those descriptions are not 100%! It all depends also on your and enemy's skill level, on your supports and enemy/you team's ganks! Don't think that if you come to lane against teemo, that you will ruin him easily just because your champion counters his!
A
ADC
DESCRIPTION
STATUS
  • Blind, MS buff, invisibility. His blind doesn't stop your slow. Poke him as much as you can, as soon as you get ult, burst him down. Ask your support for pink wards.
PIECE OF CAKE
  • High burst early, weak late game, high CC. If she tries to outpoke you, she will run out of mana very soon. Poke her back and when she gets her ult, just interupt it with yours.
PIECE OF CAKE
  • High damage, poke and CC. Dodge abilities and try to outpoke her With your range, you will be able to stay away from her ult's knock up.
  • Buy early vamp scepter to sustain her poke.
PIECE OF CAKE
  • Low early game range, high burst. Avoid her Rocket Jump and poke her whenever you can.
  • You will be able to kill her with your cc after level 6.
EASY
  • Low poke, great late game. Just poke her as much as you can and try to deny her farm.
  • When she gets bellow 50%HP, just all in her. You should buy lifesteal early. Ult her after she uses Q. When stunned, she can't face you.
EASY
  • Blind, high damage and poke, low range. Poke her with W as much as you can and try to stay behind minions whenever she tries to blind you.
  • This matchup is more about supports. Ashe can easily win if she CCs Quinn down with a support like Blitz or Leona
SKILL MATCHUP
  • High range, high poke, high damage early. She will most likely push, so farm under your turret until level 6.
  • You will burst her down late game with your immense damage. Just don't let her poke you early and get fed.
SKILL MATCHUP
  • High poke, gab closer, skillshots, depends on abilities. Don't let him poke you and stay far behind you minions.
  • Let him waste cooldowns and easily screw him up. Without his gab closer, he is no thread for you.
SKILL MATCHUP
  • Not much to say about this. Dodge abilities, kite her and all that fancy stuff.
  • Just be better! :-)
SKILL MATCHUP
  • Skillshots, high damage late game, no escapes. You should be able to kite him with your slows.
  • Win lane pre 6 and you got it.
HARD
  • High early game burst and decent poke. Dodge abilities and try to kill him pre 6.
  • If he doesn't get fed, you will be able to face him late game pretty easily.
HARD
  • High CC, high poke, skillshot abilities. Depends on cooldowns. Dodge abilities ad poke him.
  • If you dodge some of his skillshots, you should be able to kill him easily.
HARD
  • High burst and poke early. Try to wait with engages until you got your ultimate.
  • If not fed, he will get destroyes by your late game damage.
HARD
  • Spell shield, high poke, MS buffs. Use ult after she wasted her spell shield.
  • Try to slow her whenever she uses her ult, so she can't get to you.
NO CHANCE
  • Little poke, high burst, dodging ability. Safe your ult after he uses his dodge.
  • When he goes in, try to stay far and kite him, if possible, use ult.
NO CHANCE
  • High poke, good ecapes, skillshots. Stay behind minions and use your ult only when he already wasted his Arcane Shift.
  • Play safe until late game - your damage will be much higher then his. Dodge abilities.
NO CHANCE

XIII. Summary and Change log

A

So this is the end of my guide to Ashe. I hope you liked it at least as much as i do! ^^ I didn't have so much time to work on it in past few months, but i finally updated it and i think it looks great and contains good thoughts! I'm currently working on a Warwick guide too. i hope i will get back to this guide making, because i think i got quite a lot of things to share with you guys!
Anyways, greetings from Czech republic!
Have a nice day!

Change log

(8/12/2013) - Added something about Money Maker Ashe, so you know why is that build so good and renamed the guide.
(8/9/2013) - Added Freljord theme music, so you got something to listen while reading through the boring stuff i wrote.
